31 Days of Horror Challenge 2013!!!

So, we're a little late on this, but every year it's been a tradition to watch a horror movie during each and every day of October in preparation for Halloween. The idea is to watch a ton of scary movies in a relatively short amount of time. Think you can watch 31 horror movies?

So, I've started off by watching The Toxic Avenger on the 1st and Scream yesterday. Any of you guys doing this? What flicks have you watched?

there aren't even that many good horror films to take up a whole month

I'll not do one every day, but I'll probably watch more than normal. Going to see the Hammer Dracula on Monday, and the same cinema is showing Nosferatu on Halloween itself, which I'll probably also watch.

I also half-heartedly try and sort my DVDs last week, and ended up bunching a load of horror together on a shelf before giving up, so I've got a decent supply if I do decide to stick any on.

Gonna do a little October reading too.

This story is less than a hundred pages, so I can breeze through it easily.

I was saving these for a newspost but since someone made a thread for this year, yay. You rock good sir.

1. Scream 4: Remember back when meta was clever? This just goes beyond winking at the camera. This is is waving a lit flare and screaming "Watch me winking!" I did not care for it.

2. Bubbah ho tep: Why the fuck did I wait this long to watch Elvis fight a mummy?

3. Monster Squad: I've always used this challenge to watch classics that would otherwise be outside my wheelhouse. This was a great movie. One small quibble. When they were testing the kid asking if Frankenstein was the name of the creature or the doctor I disagreed. I've always felt the creature was the doctors child and inherited the family name, but that's a respectful disagreement. Plus they call the guy Frankenstein for the rest of the movie so, yeah I'm rambling now.

Maybe you can help me out here. Battle Royal is on fearnet. Would it qualify as a horror movie as like a gore flick or a thriller?

Target stores are selling Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy this Halloween season.

These cereals have been discontinued for years.

Get to Target and taste them before they're gone!

it's not horror at all and there are certainly more violent japanese films that would qualify, like audition

Well this is why I asked. Thanks. I tend to avoid Japanese horror because on the first year for this I watched the japanese tv movie that was eventually remade as the grudge. I'm not going to say there weren't scary moments but the what the fuck heavily outweighed the scary.

You should still watch Battle Royale eventually because it's good.

I heard that and I've meant to but I got discouraged by how loud the fan base bashed Hunger Games. The people who made Battle Royal openly admit they weren't the first ones to the televised human hunting idea. It may be unfair but a snooty fan base turns me right off.

it's still very worth checking out, better than the hunger games ever will be. hell, tarantino has even listed it as the number one film he wished he had made

yeah, for all the slow-building and oppressive atmosphere asian filmmakers put into their horror, it's a given that they enjoy fucking with with some heads near the end of it all

Just saw 2012's V/H/S. It was alright. I liked the production values and how it based everything around VHS tapes. There's something pretty off-putting about shitty camera quality in a movie.

I'd recommend it.

Just saw the 1932 version of The Mummy. Can't say I was a huge fan of it. The mummy doesn't even wear the bandages for the majority of the film. I understand that it's an older flick, but this one just fell flat for me. I think Frankenstein is lightyears beyond this in terms of quality.

battle royale was originally a novel made by one guy and the events in it aren't televised. im pretty sure that battle royale was the first story about a group of teenagers being forced to fight to the death by the government.

I've been watching Phantom of the Paradise for the past 5 days, it's my personal challenge to watch it all through October.

Oh man, didn't know about this challenge! Does it count if I catch up real quick with five movies today, then one movie each remaining day? This sounds like fun.

Good to see you guys again!
So far I watched Hellraiser 4: Bloodline (1996), Zombi 2 (1979), 30 Days Of Night (2007) and FearDotCom (2002), in that order.

Yeah, in Battle Royale, it's not a show. The kids are stuck on an island with collars that detect their life signs and blow up if they escape.

Holy shit did Hellraiser 4 suck. 1 and 2 were really good. I vaguely recall Feardotcom. I remember not caring for it. 30 Days of Night was a good one, though. And Zombi 2 lol. A zombie fighting a shark. What more do you need?

Rats, I'm too late. At least I'll watch horror movies on TV, which are most likely to be shown during this month of course. At least I'm going to watch all of Linkara's Longbox Of The Damned as I did last year.

For the folks who came in late. This really isn't about the numbers. It's about exploring parts of the horror genre you wouldn't have otherwise. So you can watch 5 movies in a day if it thrills you but no one is going to shun you for having an odd count. Join the fun.

Well, I think most people aren't scared by them. I just find them entertaining.

The new Evil Dead should have arrived by Netflix now, darn it. Maybe Monday, then.

So far, I've watched Demons (silly fun movie by Bava and Argento), Feast 2 (not bad but first was way better), and Freddy VS Jason (mildly entertaining, at least for my mental state at the time I watched it).

I watched Lifeforce last night.

Expected more from Dan O'Bannon and Tobe Hooper, both being pretty heavy hitters in the genre, but it wasn't really anything special.

Some nice alien boobs, if that's your thing, and a Patrick Stewart gay kiss scene if it's not.

I mean, I know they're scary to some people, but I find it incredibly hard to be scared by something that I can clearly tell isn't happening, never happened, and will most likely never happen to me or anyone I distantly know

The Saw series was kinda hard to watch, but that was more out of "oh shit his jaw just got ripped off his skull" than fear

it's often more about the atmosphere than genuinely being scared, some movies did actually scare me though.

Really? I think the history of the box was pretty interesting in Hellraiser 4, though I must agree that the first 2 movies were better. And Feardotcom was just very similar to The Ring in many ways. Today I watched American Psycho (2000). Good movie, but technically not a real horror flick, so I watched Hostel (2005) afterwards. The ending was the most satisfying thing ever.
