Good luck with that. My friend took similar if not the same course and he described it as "fucking around making flash games for a year". I never really understood if he meant it as the course was sorta bad or he was just a layabout.

Still good luck with that and it sounds like fresh air if you are just out of your GSCE/A Levels, especially if you practiced Flash in your spare time. I can't begin to tell the horror storys of our supposed web development module in our IT course. Getting into a proper specialized courses is awesome.

I hope it isn't that. From the description of the course, we'll be doing 2D and 3D animation, programming (but doesn't specify a language). And they seemed really happy to tell me that we get to test our projects on Xbox's...

How good is your course? I went into an IT course that was supposedly focused around Web Development, when we got to the Web Development portion it was our teacher spouting (incorrect) information from a text book, so I quit. I hope your course isn't like that, but my experiences have made me see college as a universal waste of time for anything specialised like Web Dev or Game Dev, because the teachers are all ex industry from 20+ years ago, which is (so fucking) worthless in such fast changing industries.

Good Luck!

Yeah, I'm worried it will be like that. Definitely the 2D animation part will be centered around Flash, so that area will be fucking easy. I really hope I get something out of this course, but if not, I'll just get through it, and continue learning AS3 in my spare time until I'm not fucking retarded at it.

I want to learn C++ but I doubt I'm good enough to tackle it yet.

Well no doubt they will teach you AS3 if it encorporates game development. At least I would imagine so... that or you will be working with some sort of game libraries.

I want to learn C++ but I doubt I'm good enough to tackle it yet.

I don't know much about C++ but games development can be achieved just as succesfully with other languages or toolkits. Learning C++ from what I grasp is if you want to be meticulously managing the memory allocation of textures and stuff which touches computer science. Then again I am sorta ignorant in the subject and for now am looking at the field from outside so take what I say with caution.

But if you do go into that sorta stuff then it will most be very rewarding and really open up a lot of opportunities, never be discouraged. There are some good Computer Science and Game courses which really teach you fine detail, if you plan for Uni that is.

Your current study in your college course and AS3 will no doubt help you ease into stuff like C++ to an extent. AS3 is gimped compared to C++ but some useful concepts will transfer over. But as I said a good understanding of the field can be achieved without stuff like C++.

Didn't mean to make the reply so long but wanted to share a simple word of advice since one of my friends and a few other people dived into programming with C++ and got burnt out pretty quickly because of the amount management involved. It put one or two of them off the entire idea for good.

I did a short course in web design, the teacher didn't know what CSS was. I didn't quit, I just did my own thing. Actually I just browsed websites and pretended I did a website I made at home in class.

Just got back from a long few days shopping for uni. Doing Multimedia technology and design BSc. Looking forward to your web development and business degree?

I'm doing it at Brunel, I researched and found it is the EXACT same course at Kent where you did it? I swear you said you did a degree in Flash Games development? How was the course?

I decided that if I ended up taking a course in programming of some sort, and the professor condemned GOTO statements, I would leave there and then.

Although, in actual fact, I would probably mumble something under my breath and carry on with the course

Doomsday-One, working on stuff better than preloaders. Marginally.

Yeah I did it at Kent. And I don't remember saying that (although that's not to say I didn't say it :P).

To be honest I found the course a bit hit and miss, so modules were a lot better than others. There was one about film making were we had to make a 10 minute documentary which was really good. Then there was a module where we had to write about the impact mobile phones had on us and how it effected us emotionally, which was a load of old wank.

I found that a lot of people took the course very seriously, while I mainly pissed about. In the first year we had to give a short critique on a painting and while most people did things by Van Gogh or Dali or Monet etc, I did A Friend In Need. In our final year we shown a bunch of Flash games with political statements and were asked to design a similar game, every other group did famine or war or AIDS, my group did Meth 2.0: Kick the Habit! It was like GTA, but from a hookers view.

One thing I did like about the course was most of it was practical/coursework based, so there wasn't an excessive amount of lectures or writing to be done (I only had three hours a week in my final year). So it's safe to say that uni didn't in any way get in the way of my social life.

Kirk without drink would be like Luis without travelling, or gust without a funny accent, or Tim without a camera, it would be a disaster.

Haha! I can't walk on water, but I run on beer.

You're really thinking about this the wrong way...

Those who can't do, teach.

Don't blame education for that fact, just get on with it and get your easy degree. Don't hate the other students for cheating, it'll be there loss later in life, just worry about your own deadlines. Uni is just a gateway into work, have fun, get it in on time and then you'll get the degree all workplaces require. Fucked up, maybe, but it's what you have to do.

Wow man sounds like you had an awesome time. I know the first year does not count towards the final grade, so a pass is alright. It seems like a lot of practical work which is cool, I am not sure if you have elective modules on your course, but some of the essays sound a bit tedious. It's weird that we are doing the same course. Kent is also a bit far away for me, it is an hour extra for the car journey.

That meth game looks pretty good. Was it made in a short amount of time, that's the only thing i'm worried about, is the deadlines. Hope work and everything is going well.

It is a bit different that you have to get everything that you normally would never use. I'm just getting cheap stuff mostly, will probs get broken or stolen in halls. What day do you start?

Wow...

If a professor asked me about the degree of impact the cell phone, or smartphone, had on my life, I would most likely set it to vibrate, shove it in an orifice of my choosing, and speed dial it. School stories are just so depressing. It wasn't exactly a chair of bowlies when I was in it. Good to see it's still business as usual.

I will tell all of you fledgling college students this:

Ignore everyone who gets in your way, and do what YOU want to do...the very best you can, even if it means trampling them into dust. Get it? Good.

btw...I wanna play the Kirk meth game. That looks like a riot. :)

I also don't refer to food or daily meals as tea... tea means a paper bag full of dried leaf/herb sediments with string attached in mug of hot/boiling water.
