I assume someone else who has the same IP address as you (because of the shitness of AOL) had been IP banned, and you were getting round it by changing your IP. I take it you are not doing it to get round a ban imposed on yourself personally (I can't imagine you getting IP banned, or trying to get round a ban given to you).

I had to start using a proxy server, as the NTL IP address I'm on is used by others, and I was finding it difficult to vote on movies before they did. Also it adds an extra layer of security between me and the internet.

Yeah, they'd all get FIRED! Not for spamming but for being drunk, that is.

The only thing I could say would be bad enough to give someone a system ban is if they post real uncensored pictures of rapes, child pornography and murder.

I've never faced such pictures in my life as a BBS poster. Have you? They may happen more often than we think, but i think mods are pretty fast with deleting such posts/topics.

At 9/13/05 12:45 PM, gumOnShoe wrote: Luckily I never had any ban problems

Good for you. Bans can easily get avoided, if you just use your head just alittle tiny bit. I've been banned twice myself, and i'm not proud of it. The stupidity in my posts we're hard to match, at least in my oppinion

I've seen bestalian pictures, submissions there you see genitals being cutted off and other sick images.

Not childpornography though.

Well, I'm way far behind on post count... 1 - I didn't do anything on NG for 3 months and 2 - I didn't discover it for a long time, and even then, I witheld to Politics... with bad grammar...

I discovered it because I was just simply bored, and curious, and clicked on the "Forums" button - and because I was a News freak at the time, I immeadiatly went to Politics - it's where it all started...

I'd been a registered member of NG for a year before I really started to post in the forums. When I first set up my account I was only visiting now and again. Then I noticed the EXP system and learnt how it worked. I then started depositing every day, and specifically watching the submissions that had 3.5 or over.

Then about 3 - 4 months ago I started getting interested in the BBS (I'm not sure why, possibly boredom as it was summer hols and I didn't have much else to do). I don't post as many as 50 posts per day (I think my max. was about 35). I try to stick to posting in mature and interesting topics (not all the time though). Recently I have started to avoid the general forum, as the topics are shit and I got sick of it. I now mainly post in the Clubs and Crews, Wi/Ht? and Programming forums.

My main areas are C&C, Wi/Ht? and Politics - your right - as you look into General, you begin to notice the horribly immature topics, like "How to work the Vagina"...

Another good example is someone posted "Hentai" and got over 300 views and 2 replys... pathetic...

I found out about the bbs after reading a news post on the front page, which brought me to the fourms. I wouldn't have even joined though if it wasn't for getting dsl and a new computer, which made browsing the site possible.

It seems I posted in wi/ht, and flash mostly when I first joined. Wi/ht is easy because you get to help people with simple stuff most of the time, and flash was cool too, I was a beginner at flash, and I could still help some people with questions.

And, yes I do know what you mean - I think only now am I posting completly regularly - I think I'm posting up in the 10s and 20s a day, and in only a month, my 3 months of no posts is completly gone =)

True, I have seen a lot of shit threads in the General. I see too much crap there like bashing things (mainly consoles thanks to the fucking fanboys), sex crap and emo bashing. I'm not an emo, but seriously, I see too many emo bashing threads and I find it really old. Sometime, I'll probably give up the General forum, but I'll check it occasionally. Anyway, other than the General forum, I visit the Wi/Ht and C&C forums.

I came to the BBS all of sudden. One day, I thought, "Why not go to the BBS and post there?", so I went there, read the rules and started to post, although I didn't post much when I first came to the BBS. My activity back then was very inactive compared to my activity now.

They do now, but I have a feeling Wade and the Mod's new secret weapon will put an end to that... "destroy" - seems like a highly effective tool.

Well now, remember - I have a feeling spam numbers will decreace with the Mods' new secret weapon - titled by Wade - and announced on the BBS I believe today, it is titled "Destroy"

If one posts in a spam topic, with the click of a button, mods can ban the topic starter and anyone who posts in the topic, making it much easier for them.

I have a feeling the Mods are fighting back in the General - hopefully, no more of that Grandma stuff will appear...

If you do decide to go with NTL and start to get voting problems this is how to set up a proxy quickly and easily.

Here is a good list of proxy servers, just pick one that is near you. You may need to try a few before you find one that works for you.

If you are using Firefox:

Tools > Options > General > Connection settings > Manual proxy configuration > Enter the proxy data into the top row > Tick the box to use the proxy for all protocals

If you are using Internet Explorer:

Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab > Lan Settings > Untick automatically detect settings (This may not do anything to help you, it is just how I have it) > Tick "Use proxy for your LAN" > Click advanced > Enter the proxy data into the top row > Tick the box to use proxy server for all protocals

I know you may already know how to do this, but just in case you didn't I wanted to make it easier for you. Aren't I nice.

The only thing the new thing will do is harm regulars who are used to getting off with nothing. It also makes it easier for mods. But practices aren't changing. Its more a scare topic to try and get users who don't know much about the system to be more careful

Well... you see you know that message that Newgrundling posted in the post...? I've already had that happen to me for a day... a week before Wade posted about it... yeah that was bad - but I think the ban only lasted a few hours... yet again one of my more dumb posts...

Also, Newgrundling said that the mods will still look over every post, meaning regulars might possibly be excluded - but as I am well aware, I do not consider myself a true regular at this moment in time.

Regulars excluded? You mean if they have a high post count they won't get banned? No. If the people responed to the spam topic, they'll all be banned. Simple as that. Maybe if someone flamed the person in the thread they'll get a longer ban, but whatever.

Plus, I don't think the destroy option is such a great idea anyway. All it does is save a little time, considering most mods ban people when they post in spam topics anyway. Now they'll just do it more often. Wow.

If you think regulars get away with these small things, then you should seesome of the mods do, when they're bored. It's obvious that it's a joke, but it's still considered spam by the rules. But, since mods can't ban mods, what can we do?

And that's just pathetic... you'd think they'd put it to good use... but as I said - lots of regulars, and they have no reason to ban it, why should they?

Precisly. If it's a good joke, that makes people laugh, and n00bs think they're serious, then there's very little motivation for a lock and/or ban,

I posted that this morning and the Joobie alt that made it was taken care of. He posted a bunch of obscene pictures in many threads, very disturbing. The problem was that the mods weren't around. And when they aren't around these things tend to happen. Mary took care of it though... but not after a bunch of noobs fell victum

I notice that when I come home, the mods seem to be gone - a bad sign.

I also notice the heavy amounts of spam that pop up - including those previously mentioned. It's too bad that all those newbs fell victim to it... poor newbs...
