Confused

I really need help with this. Can't understand how this is supposed to work.... Are you suppoed to have 5 seperate graphic symbols next to each other in the same layer? Can someone explain this with more detail to me?

It's not for me, but I like it all the same. I wish some of the animation was smoother, but it was a great tutorial for newbies like me.
