Sorry that funny faces, wacky voices and silly fanservice doesn't have me roaring with laughter.

I love how whenever someone says an anime is unfunny that the fans of said show automatically have to say it's just too "Japanese" for the person to understand.

As for it being a hit in Japan, that doesn't matter whatsoever. Plenty of garbage is popular, look at Naruto and Code Geass.

American Comedies have a variety of styles of humor...but then agian so do the Japanese, but Japan humor always goes into a certian style of humor and this style is always used in most animes around Japan.

Higurashi has ALOT of that kind of humor.

Now on the thing about torture being boring...well honestly, have you ever been tortured? It adds a sense of an eerie atmosphere.
But this is my opinion so, I can't really speak for anyone really. If you can relate to what I am trying to say, thanks for that.

No, I haven't been, but what I'm trying to say, a bad writer can make ANYTHING boring. Torture isn't automaticaly exiting. Things don't just work like that.

None of the Japanese horror stuff really involved "evil laughs", torture, yes, but as said, fiction writing isn't playing with JLego, you can't just stick a bunch of stuff together, and say it's good.
