I think I started properly enjoying it about 8-10 episodes into it.

Before then I was just watching it because I had nothing else to do, and it passed time easily.

Yeah, especially since I firmly hold the belief that one episode does not indicate the quality of a series.

I think I started properly enjoying it about 8-10 episodes into it.

That's a bit too much of a commitment for a comedy anime in my eyes.

With something that's supposed to amuse me, I want to be drawn in as quickly as possible.

I've been there before.

I don't tend to watch things just to kill time anymore, as its sort of wasteful and unsatisfying.

I was impressed that they managed to make an entire episode devoted to talking about desserts.

Not entertained, but impressed.

In fact, I almost stopped watching it during that episode.

Yeah, but I'm more informed about the show.

Seeing as I have actually seen the whole series.

Yeah, especially since I firmly hold the belief that one episode does not indicate the quality of a series.

Though if the creators were smart about it, they would have made the first episode as good as possible, so as to lure people in.

Pfft.

I've managed to watch comedy series' for plenty of episodes to pass the time.

Like Friends.

Despite Friends not being very good.

I suppose it's different when it's not on regularly, so you don't feel obligated to actually bring yourself to watch it, or you're unable to just go "oh hey, that's on, I'll watch that".

With something that's supposed to amuse me, I want to be drawn in as quickly as possible.

I tend to like that to happen with any series.

I've moved onto videogames as a source of timekill.

Most anime series tend to do that.

The first episode is usually well-animated (although this doesn't really apply to a fair deal of modern productions, as they tend to remain well-animated throughout), dialogue-heavy and packed with enough exposition to lay out the general idea of the plot, but without giving too much away.

Pfft.

I've managed to watch comedy series' for plenty of episodes to pass the time.

Despite Friends not being very good.

That's completely different.

Friends is on all the time, no commitment is required to watching it.

Plus, mentioning the fact it isn't even very good kind of defeats the argument.

What I meant is watching at least eight episodes before actually deriving enjoyment from a program seems wasteful.

If something does not appeal to me after the three episode mark, I usually give it a pass.

Exactly.

I tend to like that to happen with any series.

With something aiming a little more for seriousness, I tend to have a bit more patience for it.

It took me about five episodes to get into Eureka Seven and YEARS to develop an interest in Hellsing.

I've moved onto videogames as a source of timekill.

Me and Wonko have a serious talk.
I win.

The Red Rabb1t: Johnny Depp is a cutie.
ScreamingLordMad: The past is a fiction created by the mind to explain the present, so therefore, no.
The Red Rabb1t: So we don't exist?
The Red Rabb1t: or?
The Red Rabb1t: or does everything leading up to this point not exist?
The Red Rabb1t: It's hard to discuss this while innebriated.
ScreamingLordMad: The universe is infinetly large in size. It therefore contains an inifite number of planets, but only a certain amount of those planets are capable of being habited. Any finite number divided by infinity is so small as to be rounded down to zero. The population of the universe is zero.
The Red Rabb1t: Well, you're dividing by infinity...
The Red Rabb1t: THATS NOT FAIR
ScreamingLordMad: But true
The Red Rabb1t: It's not absolute zero.
ScreamingLordMad: Okay, so the poulation of the universe is a tiny fraction of a person. Fractions of people can;t stay alive, so therefore, still zero.
The Red Rabb1t: No, as long as things are living its not absolute zero.
The Red Rabb1t: Seeing as you mentioned an infinity amount of planets...
The Red Rabb1t: There might be a chance that there will be living organisms for maybe all eternity.
The Red Rabb1t: Forever.
The Red Rabb1t: Who knows.
The Red Rabb1t: and I don't know where you get your "There are infinity planets" thing...
The Red Rabb1t: How do you know that?
The Red Rabb1t: Are you the higher power?
The Red Rabb1t: Do you know for sure?
The Red Rabb1t: There may be too many for us to comprehend but who knows if it could be infinity?
The Red Rabb1t: I for one don't.
The Red Rabb1t: Oh man, you've got me all brainy.
ScreamingLordMad: Universe = infinite in size.
Infinite universe = infinite number of galaxy's
Infinite galaxies = inifinite solar systems
Inifnite solar systems = infinite planets.
The Red Rabb1t: So you have proof it's infinite in size?
The Red Rabb1t: It doesn't stop?
ScreamingLordMad: What am I, an astrophysicyst?
The Red Rabb1t: No, but I don't see how you could talk about stuff you don't know about for sure.
The Red Rabb1t: It's... flakey.

Nana is presently being released in North America by Viz Media. It ended its serialization in the August 2007 issue of Shojo Beat and was replaced by Honey and Clover. It will continue, however, to be released in tankobon (graphic novel format). The manga has also been adapted into a highly successful live-action movie with a sequel released on December 9, 2006, and an anime adaptation that premiered on April 5, 2006. The anime adaptation has subsequently been announced as licensed for release in North America by Viz Media.

Viz Media? Doing the anime? To quote Radiohead: "No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no..." Possibly good for me since there will be DVD releases of the anime, but we all know what Viz is going to do. They're either going to Ocean Group the fuck out of it... which won't suck because Brad Swaile will likely play a loser character, and most of the main characters are female. But, it will mostly suck. Why? Since I doubt YTV are going to put it on there line-up. Because it's not a kid's anime. FUCK MY FANBOYISM!!!!

I'd hardly spend eight hours watching something that does not appeal to me.

I derived enjoyment from the cute art, and good animation.

I'm not a tech specs whore, in fact, a fair deal of the shows I like have so-so, Hell, even poor animation.

I'd need more than good looks to enjoy something. If I was to enjoy every series I thought was well-animated or had nice art, I'd like a lot of crap.

I just found it funny after that many.

A comedy series should be funny from the very beginning.

Yeah, that happens with me a lot.

Oh, good.

It was the same with Higurashi, when I only watched that due to a friend saying it was good.

Oh man.

I was forced to watch Higurashi at an NS /A/ meeting.

After enduring half of the first episode, dubbed, every member voted not to continue with the series (or even finish the disc).

I tried watching a few more episodes subbed, but still didn't see what was so great about it.

Then after not finding it particularly great, I kept watching it for about 10 more episodes, thinking "this must get better, since I got it recommended to me".

I never think that.

That being said, 90% of the stuff people suggest I should watch sucks.

I later realised that my friend has horrible taste.

Clearly.

Shoot them.

I have less of a patience for serious things.

It varies for me.

Some stuff takes no effort to get into (Paranoia Agent was instantly cool), but other shows (surprisingly, Black Jack) took a bit of effort.

Too much of the time they come off as trying too hard, so I inherently dislike them.

I find that happens far too often with American TV dramas.

House and the Law & Order spin-offs are the only ones I like.

Hell, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and House have begun sucking lately, so my faith in dramatic programming has dropped to nonexistant.

Shows taking themselves too seriously annoy me.

Oh, much agreed.

I'm not all that serious a person, so any manner of art with no humour to it whatsoever has extremely limited appeal to me.

I developed an interest in Hellsing before I started watching it.

As soon as I heard the word "vampires".

I wasn't a fan of vampire ficition until late 2006.

I read the play version of Bram Stoker's Dracula and was hooked. Then I saw the 1931 film and was completely obsessed.

A week later, I rented all of Hellsing and marathoned it.

I've been a complete whore for the series ever since..

Same.

As soon as I realised that I had a mound of Playstation 2 games that I never finished.

Yeah, I've got the same problem.

Doesn't help that I just got 5 new games, with some being quite long.

So far my unfinished games are....
Alien Hominid (stuck on the last level since 2005)
Front Mission 4 (got it for Christmas, about two hours in)
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (9% complete, stuck with three tricky missions)
Katamari Damacy (Stuck on like the 8th or 9th Make A Star challenge, fucking unreasonable King of All Cosmos...)
Lupin The 3rd: Treasure of the Sorcerer King (forgot to grab SWAT Team uniform, about an hour of back-tracking needed to get it and move on)
Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (50% complete, but since it doesn't have typical game structure, I have no desire to complete it anytime soon)
Red Dead Revolver (fucking game keeps corrupting my save file when I get to General Diego's scenario)
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (a friend has my memory card with my saves for the game)
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (bought it on Boxing Day, about twenty minutes in)
Resident Evil: Outbreak (bought it on Boxing Day, have yet to save due to tedious initial moments)
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (FUCKING HARD FINAL LEVELS)
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (about 5,400,00 hours into the soul-suckingly long Quest mode, almost complete)
Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Macht (about two hours in)
Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits Von Gut Und Bose (haven't even touched since I bought it)

The only Resident Evil games I've played are the first one, which I hated due to me not being able to play it because of the controls being terrible

You didn't miss much.

The first game kinda sucks in all regards.

The story and dialogue are lame, the graphics are blah, the gameplay is lacking and the controls are nightmarish.

and Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, which was awesome, despite having a silly plot.

RE 4 is the best game in the franchise.

But Christ, you're so right about the plot.

Scarcely makes sense at times, although the Seperate Ways scenario in the PS2 version has some handy exposition to make it less vague and weird.

You're being a huge faggot here.

What were you expecting? Viz has had interest in the anime for months, they tend to license the anime versions of their most popular manga series.

HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK FOR THE PAST FIFTEEN YEARS?

All that rambling makes no sense.

Just chill the fuck out and wait for it.

I guarantee you it won't end up being as bad as Death Note or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya when it comes to localization and release.

Viz knows how to handle their cult shows, Maison Ikkoku, Video Girl Ai and Ranma 1/2 have all received dignified (if somewhat low-key) distribution with good, accurate translations.

Since Nana is not hugely mainstream popular in North America, the release will be over a more drawn-out period of time, which will no doubt result in an overall better release (superior acting quality, good bonus features on DVDs, etc.).

Five bucks says it'll be released in those cool Critics' Choice boxsets like Saikano and Maison Ikkoku (two to three discs per volume, wealth of cool extras, good packaging).

Fabulous.

I'm holding you to that.

I WILL CUM IN MY PANTS IF THAT HAPPENS!!!

Viz has now realized boxset-only releases are viable.

Buso Renkin (a surprisingly decent shonen series) is being released this year, complete series, in two reasonably priced boxsets. No four episode volume bullshit.

Their newer Pokemon releases have all been well-priced boxsets and I've noticed a lot of stores only stock their boxset releases of their shitty shonen stuff (since who the fuck is going to buy like fifty-something volumes of Inuyasha at $25+ a pop?).

None of their less mainstream shows are released by the volume anymore, either. Just complete series and season boxsets.

I prefer this, since it prevents me from making frivolous purchases and it gives you more bang for your buck.

Now if only they'd lower the prices of their old Maison Ikkoku boxsets, forty bucks is a bit much for 12 episodes when they offer 24+ episode boxsets of Ranma 1/2 for the same price (or slightly less, depending on where you shop).

Hell, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and House have begun sucking lately, so my faith in dramatic programming has dropped to nonexistant.

I've grown mostly bored of House, and I don't think I'm past the first season.

So formulaic.

Though I'm still watching it, since it's on.

Shows taking themselves too seriously annoy me.
I read the play version of Bram Stoker's Dracula and was hooked. Then I saw the 1931 film and was completely obsessed.

The 1931 film?

That film was ridiculously boring.

I've been meaning to see Nosferatu, since German expressionism interests me (metropolis and all that).

I've been a complete whore for the series ever since..

Well the original series takes a dive halfway through, but the other media are good.

Fuck.

Though I'm sure if I included all my unfinished Playstation 1 games, my list would be somewhere near that, since I tended to give up games when I was younger.

RE 4 is the best game in the franchise.

But Christ, you're so right about the plot.

Scarcely makes sense at times, although the Seperate Ways scenario in the PS2 version has some handy exposition to make it less vague and weird.

It's a good thing Resident Evil 4 has some great gameplay, or else I wouldn't have played it.

That's like a slightly long film.

Regardless, it's still wasteful if I'm not particularly enjoying it.

A comedy series should be funny from the very beginning.
Well he had previously recommended Azumanga Daioh, which I hated at the start, but then started to like it later.

I'm the other way around.

I enjoyed Azumanga at first, but it got grating as it went on.

Probably because I read the manga first, which is near indentical and much easier to digest.

Further proof that Satoshi Kon is magic

I'm pretty much only in it for Hugh Laurie.

Because he's a brilliant actor.

There are a few awesome second season episodes that break the formula to make things more interesting.

The 1931 film?

That film was ridiculously boring.

I found it signifcantly more interesting than most films of the era.

Plus, Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye are awesome.

I've been meaning to see Nosferatu, since German expressionism interests me (metropolis and all that).

It's great film, but if you found Dracula boring, I doubt it'll be a thrilling watch for you.

Well the original series takes a dive halfway through,

Damn straight it does.

but the other media are good.

I've started re-reading the manga lately.

Fuck.

Yep.

Goes to show you what years of not playing videogames at all will do to you...

Though I'm sure if I included all my unfinished Playstation 1 games, my list would be somewhere near that, since I tended to give up games when I was younger.

I didn't, I played tenaciously.

Probably far too much.

It's a good thing Resident Evil 4 has some great gameplay, or else I wouldn't have played it.

Gameplay is only serious draw of the franchise.

The story and dialogue is always kind of bizarre and unlikable.

I'm going to say this: BEST BUY AND FUTURE SHOP ROYALLY SUCK!!! Future Shop has piss service, and a lack of decent anime. The only thing they had that I'd buy was Read or Die, the rest was shit. Best Buy had some decent stuff, but nothing worth buying. THEY HAD VOLUME 2 OF THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA FOR FUCKING 45 DOLLARS! Do I get a hand job with that? Bonus shit? No. Just the damn DVD. They also had the platnium collection of EVA. For 90 dollars. DO I GET A POSEABLE REI ACTION FIGURE? Doubtful, just overpriced failure. AND A SHINY BOX BUT THAT'S IT!

Also, In Rainbows was ass expensive at both stores. Luckily I already got it for 10 dollars. Not 15. HMV rules.
