A deaf couple in the UK are petitioning that they should be allowed the right to have a deaf child if IVF creates a child with the deafness gene they share (and is already present in thier first child), rather than the currently proposed practice of outright banning that embreyo being implanted. They're citing discrimination against the deaf, who don't see deafness as a disability but rather as a culture.

I was under the impression that implanting an embryo with the deafness gene would be banned so long as there is the possibility of implanting a healthier one in its stead.

I don't see why they don't just go with the non-deaf child and then cut its ears off or something :P

Unfortunately, when you have a choice between a child which can hear and one which is deaf, and before it actually the stage where it develops into a person, there isn't really any significant difference other than the practical one between that and making a child deaf.

I get the points about deaf culture and whatnot, but the Lichy's are automatically making the (fairly bigoted, to be perfectly honest) assumption that a child which can hear will be completely excluded from deaf culture.

On the contrary, if both parents are deaf, then the child is inevitably going to develop excellent sign language, and an appreciation for deaf media, as well as having the advantages of hearing and being bilingual at an early age, so in effect it would have the best of both worlds.

What this really boils down to is the wishes of the parents versus what's best for a child, and the fact that the two aren't always aligned is the basis for most of our laws on child abuse.
