Friends screwin' ya over...
Ever been screwed by your friends? I haven't been for a while so this ticked me off a wee bit.
All the poeples I hang out with at school decided to have some sort of party tomorrow and every single person in the group is invited accept 2 poeple... one dude that couldn't make it so they didn't bother inviteing him, and the other unlucky chump is me. >:(
Now it's not the me not being invited and left out part that really gets me... it's more of the "Why does this has to be a big secret from me?".
Sigh... High School Drama... I hope Uni ain't bad. I've been checking out the undergraduate degree in film studies the University of BC offers... it looks pretty sweet... thought would cost nearly $35,000 when finished.......
RAWR! LOVE HUGGLES TO ALL! >:3
@ Duder
That sucks dude. High school parties suck anyway. And 35k for a film degree isn't all that bad considering I've seen them get as high as 60k. Get as many scholarships as you can as well as subsidized student loans and you'll be good. By the time you're spielburg you'll be able to pay 35k off easily ;)
Programming languages
AS2, AS3, C++, HTML, Javascript, CSS, PHP, BASIC [against my own will], MySql, Processing.. that's all I can think of. I know not all of them are programming languages (i.e., BASIC!!!, js, html.. or AS for that matter) but they're.. computer.. languages.. of sorts.
Real languages
I speak fairly good spanish, although not enough.. I did live in Tenerife for 9 months but I kinda avoided learning on purpose. Hola, me llamo liam y me gusta tu. Quieras sexo? JAJAJAJA.
UNIVERSITY
I now can't wait to go to university. Maybe after seeing the 24/7 computer labs at bradford uni (dual widescreen monitors complete with Adobe CS, Maya, etc.. and idk the tech specs), or the £1 a pint pubs.. either way, can't wait to go to uni =] I just don't have a clue which to go to yet, whupee!

Wait wait wait. I'm not exactly sure what's going on right now but are people talking about submitting animations in their portfolio to get into a film school? Because if so, that's the exact predicament I'm in. I would LOVE to go to university in the US but it's just too expensive. You're aying you got a 40 000$ scholarship????

La maestra de la clase anal es muy mala. Ella prefiero que todos los estudiantes se queden en el trasero de la clase cuando un nino o nina le ama. Ella siempre me llama :).

...and this is my fag...
yeah i got a 40k one to this school, after portfolio review of course.
but yeah colleges are really impressed by young animatior, its kind of weird because i'm used to the NG community, but outside us young animators are very rare, if there even at all. so yeah i'm sure you could get in, depending on the quality of your animation (havent seen any but ima bout to checkem out). as for mine, i didn't think it was that good.
Majoring in animation
PERSONALLY. I think its a dangerous move to put all your marbles on animation and or digital media... I know thats where its at right now but the digital scene is brutally unreliable.. Flash is hot shit right now but it could have its bubble burst much like the dot com crash in the late nineties... I've always been very uneasy about schools that build their whole curriculum on that. You really want to have a good basis of fundamentals in your major, if things go sour you'll have leverage to weather the storm doing something you are equally skilled at. I mean not all of us will end up being the next matt groening..

im majoring in motion graphics/ 3d animation which seems to have a pretty stable market. i would never try to get a job in 2d animation, wat too tough of a feild to get into.
I'm doing 3D animation with a minor in graphic design ( the way i figure it, is that if animation falls out then i'll have graphic design to fall back on, everything you see has to be designed, so i figure there is some stability there.
At 2/13/08 07:36 PM, Luis wrote: Majoring in animation
A few of my friends majored in things like Art history and Drama. They're secretaries now.
Be very careful with your majors.
For programming, I could have gone the "Computer Science" route, or the "Game Software Development" route, which is basically Computer Science with courses in AI, physics and Trig... meaning I can get a job programming databases and windows software OR have a step up on all the kiddies with their compSci degrees @ a game development company, since I have game logic under my belt.
The course was about a year longer, and 48 more credits than a compSci, but it should help me have more options open.
Well what I really want is to attend film school. I mean my animations in my portfolio definitely help things but I need movies in there. It looks like right now I'll be attending University in Ontario for school but I would love love love to go to the states. Way too expensive though. Goddamnit, now I'm thinking about school...

Actually theres pretty good demand for it right now ... particularly in the TV format. not so much on the silver screen. Flash and other animation packages are providing a cost effective way of producing professional level production. In the past, hiring a team for cel animated shorts was way too expensive and time consuming.
Anyway regardless of whatever your major is.. its a good idea to get involved in electives / summer classes that will help you in the long run but dont necessarily deal with your major ... like book keeping ... delivering great presentations ... creative writing... etc. It's easy to get 'tunnel-vision' when youre in college and then wind up the day after your graduation sitting in your apartment.. thinking to yourself... mm ok... now what.
been there. lmao.

I second Luis. Diversify your knowledge and think about minoring in something different. If you plan on doing something for the rest of your life, might as well get some experience in other areas.
Hi there!

Interestingly enough, that's exactly why Im going into education.
I'm going to go to Millersville for Tech Ed, so hopefully I'll end up teaching graphic design shit like I want to. Either that or I shift my major to Art Ed ,which means I better learn to fucking draw.
P.s. I'm posting this from Best Buy, where I just got a new computer for college since my other one just officially bit the shit.
As much as I hate macs, this has a thin keyboard that is really sexy to type on...
If hp every comes up with one, i'd totally buy it... in fact, I might see if they have one...
Another thing I'd like to point out, imagine me teaching.
Mind you, I actually teach kids at summer camp as a summer job at a pool, and I like to think that I don't do too bad a job, but you know me, I'm like effin' Capt. Tourettes sometimes.
But hey, I want to be the teacher that every kid thinks is cool and they want to have.
Scholarships aren't THAT hard to come by. I feel no reason to post the digits but I got quite a hefty some based solely on my portfolio. You can get money and smaller scholarships from just about every organization also. I heard of some kid getting a couple hundred dollars because he was a Swedish Kid living in Maine and there was some MAINE SWEDISH BROTHERHOOD or something going on. That's not how it went at all, BUT SOMETHING LIKE THAT. If you do the research you'll be good.
I'm taking an animation elective now in my first year of college and I am blown away at how fascinating all of this theory and stuff is. I LOVE this stuff. It's so much fun to do and I am learning SOO much. I've talked to Luis about this before and he was saying he couldn't take any animation courses (correct me if I'm wrong) AND LOOK AT HIM NOW. I'm probably going to go into Graphic Design because I feel that that will grant a more well rounded education covering many different forms of graphical elements (Flash is mostly graphical after all). So with that background I'll have a stronger sense of more stuff, rather than a focus on animation with is a very focused major.
Most schools will also let you take classes outside of your major, which is great for experiencing new mediums and expanding your knowledge in different areas of the arts. I'm definitely going to be taking many animation classes in my four years here, but I probably wouldn't be majoring it. That doesn't mean i can't pursue it outside of my major though, yadig?
I have to share this with you all.
I'm writing a paper for class now about the Life and Times of Percy Carey (AKA MF Grimm). He's a decently esablished hip-hop artist who did a bunch of stuff with MF Doom. Well I gotta tell you all how hardcore this guy is.
First of all he was the first kid on Sesame Street to right Snuffleufagus. After than he went to dealing drugs for years until he was shot seven times and paralyzed. A couple years later he was sentenced to life in prison on narcotics and gun charges. He paid a 24 hour $100,000 bail and created his first record in a single day. In prison he wrote a book and studied law and got his sentence reduces to 3 years. Today he still releases records and manages his Day by Day Entertainment label.
HOW FUCKING H CAN ONE DUDE GET HOLY SHIT. He blows my mind.

All this talk about college is making happy in meh pantz. I got into a few art schools already but its gonna be hard to pick which one I want to go to when Fall comes around... It'll probably come down to the location. I'm almost positive I want to major in Motion Graphics/ Broadcast Design but a lot of people probably think they know what they want to major in and then switch later on.
At 2/13/08 11:40 PM, mynamewontfitin wrote: a lot of people probably think they know what they want to major in and then switch later on.
Definately. I started off as an illustration major then switched to graphic design. All in all it panned out ok. I find that design is art related enough to where i can flex my artsy penis around without totally feeling like my passion for art is being sucked by the professional industry.
Anywho on a different note...
NG Underdog Webisodes
So I've been talking to Rig about a way to integrate the flash/art/gaming side of the site into that Audio Portal Underdog feature he's claimed his fame to... I think its a cool idea to take the initiative to expose/feature things that slip under the cracks. I feel the same way about flash animations/games. Too often gems are overshadowed by major franchise players like Weeble, The-Swain, or other established artists with a cult following.
So I was thinking that it would be cool to generate a monthly webisode recap of what went down in ng for the month... like create some quick and dirty low maintenence series that would like catch someone (like myself) up on the pulse of ng for that month. Like we'd set up a monthly thread where people could just dump things they enjoyed into the thread and like in the last few week(s) or so ... we pick a few animations/ games to feature and bundle em up with some artists to watch (err listen) on the audio portal end. So like in the end you'd walk away getting a different perspective on whats interesting on the site and what may be of further interest to you.
If it ends up catching on, then other artists could borrow the 'set' and like run the episode for that month... i dunno I think itd be a cool little community project. The webisode would be somewhat like Gamer Tonight or something.. thoughts...
