*plays the worlds smallest violin*

maybe its just because i am just becoming more and more experianced, but it does feel that the general level of maturity and professionalism in the flash forum and elsewhere is dropping, and has dropped radicly, i can remember the time when i could post a thread on complex algorithmics and get a proper discussion going on, whereas now if i were to do that two things would happen, it would just get lost, or it would be full of people with no idea what they're talking about trying to 'help' then getting annoyed when you tell them thus.

Remember about this time last year Luis was banning people for being arseholes to forum users?
Yeah. We should do that again... that was great fun. It'd be even more fun if we did it to people who didn't know what they were talking about.

Last set of intelligent questions I tried asking this forum were regarding Random Seeding and Non-Affine Matrix transformations. I got very litle help because it wasn't a simple question people could even comprehend, let alone help with. This isn't the kirupa or the flashkit forums - our range of actionscripting experts is limited to Delta (who studies Quantum Mechanics in non-Eucidian dimensions for fun) and Gust (who I picture owning an elephant gun, a small patch of jungle in Darkest Africa, and hunting inexperienced actionscripters for fun...), Glaiel (who's normally busy with another game), and a few other people like myself who can answer up to a point, before finding we're a bit lost when it comes to things beyond the easy to explain.

Hell. Our range of people who do Flash professionally and/or seriously and/or legally is pathetic. We're still mainly a forum of casual script kiddies doing this because we want to make "the kewl things on teh flash". And thats all we're ever going to be.

Xeptic Sez sumthing 'bout AS all over the place

That is one reason why I have been having a hard time adjusting to the current day status of the Flash forum. Like you said, it seems about 70% of the posts relate to Actioscript topics which I have no interest in and can't even think about trying to understand. I would LOVE to learn the basics of AS some day and I know this would be the place to go but my mind works much better with the artsy fartsy creative aspects of Flash rather than the backend coding sides.

I almost wish the AS forum with in a different subcategory to the Flash forum. And here would be the Animation side of things. That would organize it better and I think I'd have much more to add. I'm not saying their isn't questions circulating about stuff I know about it, it's just hard sifting through it all.

The only AS topic I really enjoyed was that Bots one where people made their own robot that battled other robots. I followed that thread every day until the end of it! I had no idea what the fuck was going on, but I loved watching them fight.

Uninspired

I wish so bad I could swap the amount of time I spend on forums with the amount of time I do Flash currently. I would get SO much done and I would actually have something to show for myself. I feel retarded talking about Flash every day on this and other forums yet I have NO finished full length piece to show for myself. I feel all talk and no game. I am such a part of this community it doesn't make sense that I haven't put in the extra effort to make a game by myself or an animation.

One reason I think this is because I would need to be completely devoted to an animation I think to finish it. If I get bored with something, I'll usually drop it and forget about it. That has got to stop happening.

Helping

The main annoyance with helping people here is that, as far as scripting goes, for every helpful post you'll get five or so n00bs (hate that word :( ), who think they can script because they copy and paste a bit of tutorial code, jumping in to tell the topic starter the absolute worst way to go about it:

Guy 1: Hey, can anyone give me some pointers for an FPS type game?
Guy 2: OK what u need is to download VCam google for it
Guy 3: VCAM!!!
Guy 4: copy and paste this code into all ur enemy clips...
Guy 5: heres a drag and drop tutorial its the sort of thing u need
Guy 6: www.google.com

Cool, im guessing you're going to do maths at uni? After you get your maths a levels, you're going to be able to get away with doing pretty much no work at school.

A levels rock. I need 14% in C4 to get an A in maths, an average of 76% in the 5 modules i've got left for further maths to get an A and an average of 60% in either my physics or chemistry, assuming I get an AAb offer. Otherwise I'll get an ABB offer where i only need an average of 70% in further maths.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-11-12 11:11:48

im going to do maths with computer science.

my average is 91% across the maths modules.

im also doing italian and physics, which are both incredibly easy for me, so im basicly predicted AAAA for alevel, and if i do the OCR MEI exams i can get a third a-level in maths if i do enough modules, so i could have AAAAA lol

Languages are stupid, but physics a level is easy. You cpould probably get an A already with about an hour or so learning the stuff before hand.

Anyway, deleting this thread would just be dumb. If anything, lock it. People spent tons of time building this thread, and we had a lot of good memories here.

It might sound strange, but i avoid becoming a real reg. I have been around for a while, but i find that coming here every day and posting a lot is a bit of a waste of time. Time i could either spend on study, flash or social stuff. I feel depressed when I go to bed and think 'hmm all i have done today is conversate in a forum'.
It's probably the reason I wasn't around a lot for a while and I only come in here occasionally. I love the flash forum for the collaborations it spawns and other productive stuff. It's cool to meet some fellow animators/programmers also, but honestly i don't really care about people with a big 'reg' ego who see it as an achievement to make 100 posts a day.

This lounge and shit in general

I dont necessarily think this thread needs a lock/delete.. i just think that people (hey, myself included) need to wake up and just realize that this is the flash forum ... not the general forum. theres a very distinct reason why there were two forums built... and like i said i am part of the problem myself cause ill just wander in and spew spam and be off..

I think its great that the flash-minded users have a thread they can come in and make a casual post, maybe talk flash with other veterans without having to risk being banned by power-happy general mods (there i said it) ....

I think over the life of this thread its like lost sight of the forum that it lives in... we've all just gotten TOO comfortable with the idea of making a general forum WITHIN the flash forum via this thread and its sucked alot of actual productivity out of people because instead of actually doing what they are good at or improving themselves.. they have become lurkers of this thread, where its fine for the sake of taking a break or whatever... but it shouldnt be a thread you live inside of.

I am happy for those 'regs' that have enjoyed the thread here and have the self discipline to go out there and rock the portal or go out there and persue flash professionally etc etc...

I think this thread is fine and it is a responsibility of each person who pokes in here to like not get sucked into it.

A Real Topic - New Game Idea

My friend and I came up with a new idea for a game today that I really like the sound of. Its set 2 weeks before Halo 4 is released, and you are a Game shop owner. Nerds are beginning to swarm around your shop, attempting to break in and steal a couple of preview copys and generally be a nuisance. You have to defend your shop from them by killing them or throwing demo disks at them to distract them. It gets closer and closer to the release date, and then more and more come.

I thought the idea was great when he pitched it to me. What do you think?

I'm off to help people now :P

That'd make up a good idea behind the game, but now think about how you actually play the game. Is it a side scroller, defender game, RPG, etc etc?

I honestly never knew you had, and seeing as you don't mind, I'll make it anyway. I just played your game, and what I pictured isn't anything like yours (other than the idea). I was picturing it as a top down zombie-like shooter thing with shotguns and other stupid weapons.

Incidentally, has anyone made any really good top-down shooter games in Flash? It seems like a genre with a lot of potential. I've always wanted to make one, but I'm a little occupied with making a ridiculously long platforming adventure at the moment.

Shooting Guns
I'm not really the gun type, but I went shooting with some friends who dragged me along on Saturday and I really enjoyed it. We shot some pumpkins with 12 guages, barbasol shaving cream, a TV, they also had a .45 glock, and an AR-15, but the skeet shooting was my favorite...real life video game!

Anybody else shoot guns?

P.S. I also work have a full-time flash job

Game Ideas
I wanted to make this game, but no-one would code it, and it probs wont get sponsored because it uses sprites :(.
Anyway, it's like mario where you jump down tube and stuff, but your a mexican trying to get over the border, but like mario style. So you jump into tunnels and up ladders to avoid the cops etc. And you have a time limit due to the sun coming up, so each level gets harder. Then you get unlocks etc. I would love to do the game, but as i said no-one would code it. If someone wants to take the idea be my guest. But credit me xD.

Yup, me too, I make flash games all day, every day for a massive company here in the UK. Flash is my career now, and will be for as long as its the market leader in light, cross platform distributable game creation. There are so many Flash jobs about in london alone, there's no excuse not to go get one if thats what you really want, and you're prepared to be turned down a few times because of 'lack of commercial experience' before you land that dream job.
