That's pretty much the main reason why I come here. Though I act imature/idiotic at times I see this as a great learning experince opening as I get to chat with some pros in the feild I'm interested in. Sort of like a flash apprenticeship program, but not really. I kind of just study and take notes on the pointers and advice not only the pros but the other guys too. As an added bonus your all pretty cool guys and easy to talk to. :)

Game Ideas.
Always thought a cool game would be somethin' along the lines of you playing a bouncy ball or someone on a pongo stick. Your constantly bouncing but you can abvoiusly bounce higher. Anyway the goal is to bounce your way up a skyscrapper of plateforms and reach the goal point. Multiple levels, power ups, and some evil enemy A.I.'s to slow you down. Been doing some AS research for that one in my spare time actually. Still stuck on A.I. scripts though. :P

I've had the AS: Main on my favorites since last June. ^^
I've gone over lots of things the past few months.
Another good one I found was gotoandlearn.com that site surprised me. I had no idea flash was that capable. Just the MP3 Player made in flash only blows me away.

Say if I finished college tomorrow, I personally wouldnt know where to start looking for a job to do with flash, so where and how would you recommend Tom? Start with agencies. Get your name on every technology recruitment agency list in your area. They'll do all the hard work for you and all for free (to you anyway).

Get a portfolio together that really emphasizes your strong selling points. I got together all my games, but mainly showed of the technically impressive ones.

Specialize - unless you're joining a pretty small company, you really won't find an all round flash position. You're either a developer (coder) or a designer (artist). Build your portfolio and job hunting efforts around whichever one you're stronger at.

Interview REALLY well. If you're coming out of a relevant degree or not, chances are you still have no commercial experience, other than some freelance/sponsorship work. That means you need to impress the company you're interviewing with, since there are a lot of more 'experienced' people out there they could be hiring.

Network. There's a london flash platform users group, poker tournaments, massive conferences and loads more for you to get along to. Make friends with other flash guys, get your name out there. But easy on the business cards ;)

Making bike frame customising programs and maps for airports in Flash isn't as interesting as I thought it'd be any more, and I may want a change of scenary soon if I can find a Flash job with a years experience at more than I'm currently on...

I'm having trouble finding the link between being good at Flash and doing it "full time". I think you guys are getting the terms "professional" and "full time" confused. Full time is simply the time you spend on it. Professional on the other hand means you do it well to make money... I think the question you're trying to ask is how many people here do it PROFESSIONALLY, not necessarily full time.

That's why I think your estimation of how many professionals there are here is greatly skewed. If you've gotten a game sponsored by Armor Games, then you're a professional, you've made money with your skills in the Flash field.

When Bill Gates started developing software for companies he was in high school. Did he do it full time? No. Was he a professional? Yes. So yeah, just because a lot of people here don't do Flash/programming full time, don't relate that to them not being good enough. That's silly. I think it's mostly related to them still being in school.

Or even BETTER, learn c++ and make console games!

C++ isn't THAT different compared to flash, most of the syntax is the same and you can reuse concepts across all languages. It just offers a lot more flexibility. Plus openGL is shweet.

I've, uh, shot a rifle in boy scouts. :P

Flash money

Some people say that if you're doing flash to make money, they think its selling out. But what about exceptions, like if the animator sells DVDs or t-shirts or something? They're still doing what they want, when they want? Plus, its a much better way to make money than some boring office job.

I'm sure you know what they talking about.. they are wondering how many people are doing flash as a full-time career right now and possibly getting some advice about it... of course theres like a loophole and a technicality for everything in life but i mean does everything always have to be politically correct?

You missed my point entirely. That's not where the "full time" discussion began if you actually take a look at it. Some people were making the sad excuse that the reason this forum is so unhelpful is because there aren't enough "full time" Flash people around here, when that's completely untrue. What I'm getting at is the people who don't do Flash as a "full time" job can still be HELPFUL, unlike it has been implied in the last page or two. Someone called the amount of expertise around this forum "pathetic". Please, just stop. There are so many skilled people here, that it would be better to call why this forum is so unhelpful a mystery rather than make stuff up. Let's just be honest, there's loads of skilled people here, but getting skilled people to donate their time to help people is a challenge.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-11-12 23:51:09

There's so much negative energy right now it's pretty rediculous. If anyone is going to sit here and call people like delta or gust unskilled because they don't do flash full time is either overly conceited or just trying to start an argument. The fact of the matter is this forum is generally a decent resource but you shouldn't expect every question to be answered, sometimes a logical solution takes time to find, sometimes the right people to ask aren't on.

The collective talent on this forum is pretty high considering its a donate your time. I understand that people say that people should be more helpful but bitching about it won't do all that much.

Relaxing Places.
Does any have a place they like to hang out to relax when they're stressed from work and etc.
I usually just lay infront of my fireplace with my dog in the living room. I took a nap just a few hours ago it was pretty sweet. I just got a bunch of firewood the other day too. Anyone else like fires? Wish I had some hotdogs or somethin' right now to cook. It's all dieing coals now. :P

Also the NG Log just got it's bytesize up a while ago. It's pretty sweet. :3 What's your guyses opinions on bytesizes? I think they're a great way for some artist to just get free exposer and a great way just to have fun. ^^

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders. - Baz Luhrman

Respect your elders. I thought the quote was appropriate. I am not trying to be pretentious, in all seriousness read it and think. We always talk about "BACK IN THE DAYS", "REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE AWESOME", "IT WAS SO RAD WHEN...".

Ferget it...now is chill...relax.

DarkMana's assault.
lol I guess that's weird for you guys eh? Nearly everytime me and my buds walk around downtown that happens. Usually they don't walk away though. It's just poeple trying to act touph. I remember just the weekend before school started this yeah me and 2 of my friends just came off the train tracks and were headed back to my place. We passed these 3 guys and one of 'em wearing like 30+ pounds of chains and crap tooned to me just as we passed and started calling me a faggot. "Faggot! Your a fucking faggot! Ya fuckin' faggot!" I kept walkin' 'cause I'm used to these kinds of poeple now and have learned to ignore them my friend Braydon didn't take to kindly to this whole thing though so he turned to the guy and started threatening him to shut up. The guy responded by nailing my friend in the chin. So me and my other friend Trevor jumped in and next thing you know their's six guys in a small brawl at around 3 AM downtown.
Eventually we ended up knockin' down two of 'em and then booked it for a few blocks. We're smart enouph not to hang around or make the fight last long. Ya try to avoid the fights but if ya can't get-r-down with as soon as possible. I remember giving my friend Braydon shit on the rest of the way back home. lol
But yeah as much as I hate sounding like those stupid anti-violent poeple the best thing to do is to just ignore them or walk away.
...I think the violent atmosphere outside is one of the reasons I'm somewhat of a hermit.

lawl, 'least you're capable of walking at 3am. You walk ANYWHERE in Guatemala (doesn't matter the time) you're close to death. I mean... just yesterday. I was in the car with my brother, 1 pm. We were in front of some lights (you know, those you do when driving.. red...green... name doesnt come to me) and there was another car in front of us. Two girls, windows down. Two guys come walking to them, one sticks a gun inside the car and while the other takes the stuff. The girls are screaming... and wait, it's even worse. You'd thought those guys after that would go running, but no, they go walking and talking like nothing had happened. 1 pm.

Sad world...

I got carried away

This began as a simple physics test, but I kept going with it, began drawing some stuff and making it look pretty, should I make it into a game for Christmas, or just let it to be a test like it was supposed to be. BTW i took the horse from a tutorial i bought, and will be remaking it. I was just too lazy to make another one if I was going to scrap it anyway.

Fashion.
I have very unique clothes compared to the poeple in this area. I wear interwebz stuff. Like merch. from NG and etc. So poeple see stuff like my ARNGRY FAIC shirt and are either like "OMG Where'd you get thatt!!!11!!" or "WTF is that?". lol

The pricetag looks expensive, which is why in the blog comments I'm trying to get more information about whether or not it'll be worth it for a n00blet like me. Lee's tutorial over at gotoAndLearn seems to make it look very easy, and playing about with Sandy has been fun so far. But I really want in on this technology.

Anyone else interested in a conference to learn how to make awesomeness?

Hmm there always seems to be alot of flash related things going on in london, i really should coordinate my next trips over there with some of these events... maybe i could even business expense it by doing so.

Speaking of which, I'm considering swinging by London to spend my birthday there, still pretty sketchy but the more i think about it the more doable it seems.
More on that later. Anyway DO keep posting up flash related events, i think it could even go a step further and have a whole thread devoted to Flash/Gaming / Design related events ... i have the inspiration pool thread.. theres the tablet thread... i think there should be a conferences and events thread, that would be cool to check in on and see if theres anything local worth attending...

Some of us are more in tune with whats going on out there in the flash scene.

Why is this so important to you? Some here just use it for fun, so what? It's not like a game/design gets better when people pay you to make it. In fact I myself am really comforting with the fact i can draw whatever i want, whenever i want. I'd lose all interest in drawing/animating if some dude told me to draw some banners/logos/website for him. Fun should always be priority in making art, making money comes second in my opinion.
