To be honest, as great as FF VII-IX were (X sucked hard) they were still a let down for me from FF-II & III (respectively IV & VI in Japan). It all depends on your generation, I guess. Still, I think, for most people, jumping right into a new generation of a console at the start can be a mistake, no one can predict how things will eventually pan out.
The games availible at launch are always a little lacking, and often the first systems will experince unforseen problems as was the case with the PS-2 and the 360. I have a first generation PS-2, got it at release, and it's had it's problems and been in the shop, even now it's touch and go again.
All I'm saying is that things are never what you expect them to be. If it were up to me the PS-3 and the Wii would be smashing successes, both. But I don't think the market can sustain 3 major consoles.
