At 5/3/07 02:33 PM, BritishMoose wrote: Gap years are for the weak! I'm going straight to uni next year, where are you going?

Thats what I'm going to do. Except I'm a year behind you.

To keep this an open-discussion, what does everyone else plan to do? Go to Uni? Work? And @ you Britishers: what do you think of gap years?

I'd love to go on one, but i'd have to spend the first half of the year working getting enough money to do something interesting in it, and also I'd rather go to uni. I've come up with loads of challenges i've got to try at uni which i can't do at home because my parents would get angry. Like 24 hour drunkness, boil vodka and see if the vapour gets me drunk and beat my record of drunken days in a row (currently at 14).

Next year I shall be going to the School of Oriental and African Studies (unless I can't afford various bits and bobs, in which case I will work for a year and reapply at Cambridge) to study Japanese (I mentioned this recently...)

Cambridge sucks. I'd rather go to a university with a more appealing work to play ratio.

Another thing I want to do one day is go on a road trip around the world. Literally just bringing a few spare clothes, a whole load of money, a whole load of alcohol (for the night, not when driving) and a car.

Re:How long you had flash
Ive had flash for aslong as i've had my NG account and some.

One thing though, I wasn't whiney when I got it or just was given it and whined until I got help. Me and my friends always used to use whatever we could to make stuff. For example Paint to make sites, Sound recorder to make songs, game maker to make games, Paint for sprites.

Rather than just be given the program and come here to whine for help. So get a bit annoyed when people do that. Notice that in some people who post here, they are just nerds who have found flash.

Re:Gap years

I would take one but I doubt i'd be going Uni now. Instead if I do want to carry on with education i'll take the Uni level courses at college. I'd like to do some gap year like stuff though, my dad was telling me about when he just randomly went to france and became a grape picker.. or hitchiking his way to a Dylan concert.

It would be cool to do that sort of thing in the next few years atleast before getting tied down in some shit job for life.

---

DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW ABOUT MAGNETIC RECORDING? Need help, and it would be appreciated. Will pay you back somehow :D

All work and no play...

I can't raelly give much of an opinion, but i think i'd always like shorter terms of harder work than long streched out terms. I just get more done if i feel like i need to do it :P

Flashing

Roughly 1+1/2 years now. My friend showed me MX 2004 at his house, i loved it, i downloaded a trial, then when flash 8 came out, i bought it for a very expensive £50 :P.

4000th

One of the coolest 4000th posts evar. Nice picture, i like the new style fuzz :).

I honestly wouldn't mind having to work hard at a Uni which is one of the best in the world (I believe it was number 2 behind MIT or Harvard...)

I know someone who goes to cambridge and a few people who go to other quite good universities. The cambridge person works all the time and the other people get drunk loads and still do a fair amount of work. All my life I've been telling myself I need to work hard to benefit me in the future, but now my future's here and I can either take 2 routes. Go to cambridge, work a lot, rarely do anything exciting, become rich. Or live life to the max. Get drunk all the time, be in huge debt, still do a lot of work so I'll be able to get a good job at the end of it, but i will've lived life much more.

I want to do crazy things like wake up in germany without knowing how i got there. Cambridge doesn't seem like the kind of place where i could do that.

NG collab

I havent ignored peoples requests to consider heading up some sort of engaging collab.. i just want to close out the sketchbook tour and some other commitments.

I was watching that winning pico day entry and i think it may be cool to do something around ng lore... in terms of leveling up or something... i dunno yet.

I was thinking something like the game knighs of the round... see screenshot below. a brawler where you are constantly leveling up and stuff.. im open to suggestions and ignore the medieval theme of the screenshot, i dont want to knock off tom's castle crashers.

I basically want to get together a little dream team where people have very defined duties that take advantage of their strengths and we're all on the same page. I thought i'd use my networking powers to get some guest artists for things like bosses and stuff..

More on that later.

I wanted to also mention that this game would be based on flash 9 technology.. games seem to run better and i figure it would be worthwhile to take advantage of it.

Re: Uni, Gap Years etc.

Lol, I'm doing my SATs (year 9) all of next week. I'll leave the whole university thing until I'm older; I love being immature :)

Gap years I'm not so sure on. If you're going to do anything that is worth spending a year off of education for then you're going to need a lot of money, and that's where one small problem comes in - getting that money :P

RE-ish: Fun things post-education
To British people: Did any of you / will any of you go on a weeks holiday with just your friends at the end of year 11? In my school, it's tradition that everyone goes to Newquay/Devon at the end of year just to spend a whole week getting drunk, laid, etc. It sounds like fun, but I know plenty of people have had bad experiences, i.e woken up finding they have no bodily hair left...

8 days left of compulsory education

How long flashing?
I've had flash for a little over a year now and had trials before so I've basically been doing flash for a year and half.

Uni-Gap

I plan on going to university right away, I'm looking at York, Western, Laurier or UBC, probably not UBC since its on the other coast. I'm gonna get right into accounting and business and give up any dreams of a different kind of career so I can pull my goal of at least 100k per year by the time I'm 28. At a very young age I realised I love money...

NG collab

Sounds like fun, I'd contribute in anyway, probably a small way since I'm not as good as a few of you guys here, but like any graphics no one wants to do, I'd do it... crappily though... lol.

The brawler theme is very popular on the internet, may I suggest that it pertain some sort of extra piece of interactivity like destructable and interactive enviroments, so when you throw some guy into a wall, the wall cracks or breaks.

Whoa its me!

post-16 holidays
We went to St. Ives. It was awesome. We nearly got kicked out of our youth hostal. We drank the somerfield out of alcopops. Aaah back in the day.
Then the next year we went to spain. 19 people in a spanish villa for a week. That was also awesome.
Then I took a doss year, different to a gap year because I did jack shit. I worked some and I drunk quite a lot but basically I did nothing.

How long... Flash

I became interested in animating in 6th grade when i discovered post-it note pads could be used to make flipbooks. I probably filled up more than 100 of those things.
Then, in 7th grade I managed to get a used copy of Flash 5. So it's been 4 years now. As I become more interested in still art, however, I animate less and less. I think I should start up again, maybe.

NG Collab
I'd like to be a part of this.

How long have you been Flashing?

I've had Flash for one and a half year. I never knew of the Flash scene and the main reason I joined Newgrounds because I wanted to be able to get some help. But out of all the things I've learnt in Flash I still haven't managed to finish something though I get too much homework.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-05-03 17:53:32

HOW LONG HAVE YOU FLASHED, NG?!

Well, I'd say about 2 and a half to 3 years.

Saddly, a lot of my earlier shit was unsavory and now I can't seem to finish anything, hence why I like collabs.

I get to animate a little bit, which is good practice, I get credit, and I usually complete it because people are relying on me and I also only have to do a little.

I want to get better are drawing though. I think that'll help animation A LOT.

NG Reg Collab

Sounds like what we have going on NGC for our RPG Collab. It'll always be neat if it gets done.

College and such

I'm not gonna lie. I'm getting slightly anxious and slightly worried.

I'm taking the accursed SATs on Saturday (not really bothered, I'm a pretty good student), but I still have no idea what I want to do.

I really like Graphic Design, whether it be PS or Flash, but I feel that I need to get a lot better at art to be truly good.

What I'm thinking is do something like Teaching Major with a GD minor, and that seems really good, especially for the two colleges I'm looking at (Kutztown and Cabrini in PA).

Nathaniel and Bryce Milburn sent me their college sites (Savannah College of Art and Kendall College of Art), but I'm still looking around.

Frankly, I have no idea what I really want to do :c

Anyone got any ideas, tips, or recommendations?

Where do you plan/are going/want to go to college?

How long have you been flashing
About, 4 years ago my friend told me about a program called flash, our school computers had it. I had no tutorials and the whole thing was confusing. So I got out of it. About 1-2 years later, my other friend told me that he had flash 5 on his computer. So I went over there and we fiddled around for a few hours working out how to use tweens, add sounds and shit like that. I got the cd off him and we made loads of hilarous toons about stick figures giving anal to other stick figures and shit. So yeah, 2-3 years of flashing.

Flash - how long you've been doing it

I think i'm at around 2.5 years so far, maybe a little bit longer but that would be me just messing around in it (pulling the circle tool around or something haha). I made really really shitty animations with 2 of my friends and I guess I was the only one that kept going at it to get better, so I've been teaching myself ever since, I haven't used any of the tutorials or anything like that - which I think is cool because whenever I find something new I can kick myself for not finding out about it before.

I've been getting better each time I sit down, but what I can't really seem to do is kick out a good piece in a reasonable amount of time, usually takes me waaay too long. I'll see though, maybe things'll change and I can be more efficient at this whole thing. What's wierd is thinking about how people who've been using flash since the really early version problem probably have such a solid system down for kicking out flashes- that's the biggest area I need practice with, I'm all over the place on that one.

always behind schedule.

Flash- How Long?

Well I started fooling with it at age 11, so around 2002... Then I got into programming 2 years later after I found animating too challenging. So 2004 I started programming and for 3 years I've been making games, and still making them :)
