RE: Watchya Working on?
Finals for school, hence the lack of action on Flashwiki.net or any recent game launches. Still trying to recoup after the "Console Launch: Second Shipment" game flop I had.

I have a few small projects coming up in the future, and the start of the final Ball Revamped game in January.

Flash as a Hobby
Is Flash fun for you or does it feel like a chore? Do you do it for fun, or the thrill of knowing you'll get a score or possibly even cash? Is it the challenge? Or maybe all of these? Flash seems like a highly stressful and difficult program, so I want to know what drives you to continue with Flash, when you could just be lounging and playing video games all day.

Hi there!

Same. All of my stuff is Due by sunday.... my C++.NET final is a whore! Then, I have off until the 12th of January... hence, the lack of progress on Heartless Geeks, and no new games.

Flash as a Hobby

Is Flash fun for you or does it feel like a chore?

Yes. To both.

I personally enjoy creation. Whether I'm building a house a game, a webpage or a reputation..I love to see things take shape. Flash is almost everything to me. I've always been a game designer, just not always digital. I've also always been an artist. Flash is the only program I know of that mixes those two things. I can draw/animate/code all in the same interface and with the click of a button, see my progress.

Is it stressful and annoying at times? Sure. Is it still worth it? Absolutely.

RE: Flash as a hobby

Flash is definitely something fun for me, though at times it can seem like a chore, mostly when I have to get one part of a movie out of the way so I can work on the other part I'm really excited about. Each time I sit down to work I feel like I'm getting better and better even if I just got up to get a sandwich and it's only been a few minutes, uh in terms of the money/score thing, it's probably the last thing I'm thinking about when working on a movie. For me it's all about the process, I love thinking of an idea then taking it to the drawing board, and especially working around problems and kind of waiting around for an answer until it hits you while you're doing something completely different. I couldn't define it for you, making flash is a lot of things to me, I guess it's because it's my little creation and I can control pretty much everything about it, that's why I like seeing different people's work so you can kind of say "Oh, I like how that person went about doing that" - It's kind of a window into your own world and how you see things.

always behind schedule.

RE: Flash As A Hobby

I love doing flash. I'm a slow worker, only because I always find new techniques and try to use them as much as possible during the course of my animation.

Most of the time I scope a general idea, and improvise around it so it's not as boring. I love seeing things take shape, come together, and especially the final result.

So, yes, I would consider flash an enjoyable hobby.

Nullity

This isn't quite flash related, but I figured some of you ASers may find it interesting.

A new theorem solves the problem of nothing. Dividing by zero now has an answer. That answer is nullity. Nullity spans everything from negative infinity to positive infinity and is simply made to keep computers from dividing by zero and crashing. Read the article and make sure to watch the videos; the theorem is quite simple.

RE: Flash as Hobby

I do flash as a hobby, originally I wanted to be a game designer but I'm not naturally gifted in art and not a very good programmer, and the business being the fastest growing business in the world is just too competetive for someone whos not the absolute best. I just like making stuff, my own stuff, and seeing it on the net. And also I think I'm gonna do something for the 20th anaversiary(again spelt wrong..) of zelda, but not a collab cuz I don't wanna host a collab. And I do this just because I like zelda and I like making my own little thing on zelda.

Whoa its me!

RE: Flash as a Hobby

I do flash to do flash. Yes it is a hobby, but it is also making me money, which I like. It is always fun, but never without a far share of challenges and annoyances. Right now I am being absorbed into game making mainly because I can make money off it and I like money. I do still want to break from games for a bit and make my untold animations though. I have a number of scripts on my computer or on paper that are waiting to be followed through. Then on the burners behind the scripts brews my gargantuan pot of ideas. It really is a shame that ideas are so much easier to think of than to execute :(

RE: Nullity

so, does this mean we will have to change the flash Math class to return "nullity" when we divide by zero? :P

that's really interesting, but it seems more like an easy way out, to say that dividing by zero is from negative infinity to positive infinity. isn't every math problem a nullity, then?

I think it's an easy way out also, but I'm currently not looking at it as much mathematically as I am technologically. Now if a program hits a divide by zero error it won't say OH NOES!! STOP RUNNING! but rather output nullity and continue on with business. But even looking at it like that, we are already set for those situations. Like flash will output NaN and will continue on. Hmmm.... well it has to fit somewhere.

isn't every math problem a nullity, then?

Not if the answer is an imaginary number.

Re: Stop, shower time
I usually fall asleep in the shower lol. I think of ideas lying in bed like Fuzz.

Re: Whatcha workin' on?
A defence game, a tribute to John's awesome Ball Revamped games and a few ideas I haven't started yet...but it's being "worked on"... :P

Re: Flash is a Hobby
I do Flash because it's fun and...cool. But getting some cash and other things among that along the way is an awesome bonus.

Re: Nullity
I think it's a good idea, but what would you do with nullity?
_x = nullity;
Huh? Where will the x position be, eh?

I tend to vote everyday, if I'm online. I mainly vote to gain B/P (4 ranks away from EGSC), exp is just a nice bonus.

Plus, happy 15k posts, roughly :O.

i vote and submit points every day, im less then 100 from the next level. But its not very often i vote on new submissions, which i should. just takes to much time. I just skim over the top 50, voting on ones i like, depsotiing, and leaving.

You really need to get some admins for that :P Nobody could evpect you to put a lot of time into it alone, but I'm sure it'd get a lot more interest and articles if people saw it being looked after and updated more often.

Lots of stuff about Flash gets boring and frustrating, but for me the actual creation of decent stuff outweighs that. Plus there are a lot of random parts that I really enjoy (I love writing the initial engine, andanything to do with scriptwriting is awesome. I want to do more point and click, purely because of the number of descriptions of things I can write).

In general, I think I'm quite a creative person. It always used to frustrate me when playing awesome games or watching great films that it was beyond my capability to make something of similar greatness, but Flash goes someway towards putting my ideas into solid form.

Having said that, I've not made a single Flash yet that I'm totally happy about.

RE: Flash as a hobby

I make flash for all the e-pussy I get from it.
But on a serious note, I think its natural for Flash to drain you, animation/gaming is a very draining activity. I definately think that its not something for everyone, although everyone wants it to be something for them.
I think that take breaks from Flash is important. I havent opened flash since my Halloween thing and I just did last night to fuck around with it, and it was like coming home to an old friend and now i feel really good about 2007 and coming back stronger than ever.
