But still, I'm interested to know whether we're going to get 40 platformers or a little more variety.

For your information, I may make a platformer for it lol.
I also have a crapload of side projects, right now I'm working on the turret defense game, RPG, epically aesthetically pleasing, cheat proof, 100 level mouse avoider, the Po3 platformer, and I plan to finish them all by then end on August.

No job this summer, (get working papers at like 16, I'm 14), so this will hopefully be my main cash flow.

Even if people don't give out spoilers, it's still interesting to just have the teams discussing stuff. As Tom said in his original post:

"To further achieve this goal, teams will be in regular contact through the summer, providing team-to-team feedback. This event is more cooperative than competitive, although ultimately games will be ranked by score and the best games will get the most publicity."

I simply assumed there would be a discussion thread for it. Oh well.

Yeah, I'm not really sure wether to make a side scroller or a Portal Defenders-like game, octodimensional movement sounds way more fun, but it has already been used eleven million times, what would you guys prefer, considering this is basically a beat 'em up game?

I need opinions

Most people would probably do a normal platformer. So I suggest going for the octo-dimensional. It's not as overused as platformers.

Oldboy

Just watched this awesome film again since it's Sunday evening and there's bugger all else to do. It's got the best act of revenge ever in it IMO. I'm purposely avoiding spoiling anything here, and I'd advise those of you who've seen it to do the same, but it's easilly the maximum possible amount of ownage you can get.

For anyone thinking of buying some DVDs right now, I totally suggest getting it:

UK Amazon link

---

Park Chan-Wook is one of my favourite directors anyway. If anyone wants some DVDs, here are a couple more I suggest getting:

Joint Security Area - It's got a fairly pointless plotline about Neutral nations, but the half of the film about soldiers each side of the border more than makes up for it. One of the best anti-war films ever, not to mention the best final shot and use of a photograph in any film I've ever seen.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance - Probably the most depressing film I've ever seen. Worth watching at least once, since it's a massively powerful film about the futility of revenge.

Lady Vengeance - After Mr Vengeance and Oldboy, this makes up the last part of Park's 'Vengeance Trilogy' (so you should be able to order all three together). While it doesn't have as powerful an anti-vengeance message as the other two, it's still a highly aesthetically pleasing and well directed film.

---

In case anyone can't tell; I love films :P If anyone's got any suggestions of more stuff to see, I'll be glad to hear of it.

I saw Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance recently.

It really annoyed me how the actually kidnapping was never shown - it's as if 5 or 10 minutes of the film were cut out just to add confusion or because the writer couldn't work out how the scene should go.

To be fair, it was a stylish film but I wasn't particularly moved by it. Maybe because I was constantly thinking about that seemingly missing scene for the 2nd half of the film.

Power of 3 discussion thread

It's not my place to make one but I think it'd be a nice idea. Or maybe we could just write about it on our NG blogs or something.

The Funky Lovers' game has already been spoiled (if you check my previous posts). I made a plan that hopefully Luca/Jon won't mind me sharing:
Now until July 3rd (by which time the engine will hopefully be done): pre-production
Until August 5th: working out the logic (of both sound and game mechanic) and getting all the features in place
Until Sep 5th: refining, bug-fixing, improving graphic/audio assets, changing levels and play-testing

Yesterday and today, I spent many hours considering features, testing them on paper and in my mind, then writing stuff to share with Luca/Jon. Of course, I expect some changes once the engine's made and some potential massive changes, pending testing. Hence the month to sort that out.

I'm excited to hear what SBB will bring to the synaesthetic aspect.

I think our game will be unique, even if it's not universally loved. BUT WE STILL LOVE YOU.

i thought it was fun to play and it would have been more fun if it wasnt about fucking MARIO..

Besides the fact that it's more unoriginal than shit, it has a couple of flaws that annoyed me majorly, one of them being the rudimentary scoring and health system, the gameplay has a couple of screwups, other than that, I think it's ok, the animation is nice, just as everything from D-Sun, I like that guy's stuff.

Fuck you Firefox

FF is fucking me around something rotten. For some reason it keeps adding to the front of my code. Here's the source, FF on the left, Safari on the right. Has anyone come across anything like this before?

FF is the new IE! :O

Looking through my diary...
...hmmm.

Friday May 15th
Today was a strange day to say the least. Day started as usual with all the usual morning things. Boring lessons blah blah blah. Oh yeah, I gave Lizzie her book tokens but I don't really remember it because I'd just dragged myself out of bed. I should feel guilty about these tokens because to be honest I found them on the floor in my room. (Hope Lizzie's not reading this).
So anyway, boring day, but then it came to lunch and me and Dan went downtown to co-op. There we bought 2 packets of pitta bread and a bottle of extra tangy reggae reggae sauce. So we poured the reggae sauce all over the pitta bread and we ate it. By the time we realized it it was too late. We ate that piita bread too fast and didn't see it coming. The moment it started to burn it really started to burn. Our mouths became dry and it burnt and burnt and burnt and just when we thought it had stopped we ate some more and it burnt again. Stupid idea.
So we started heading back to school to go and get some water from the drinking fountain and as we came through the gates there was a group of Year 8's scabbing food off people at the gate. So for a laugh I decided to watch their mouths burn at pitta bread covered in reggae reggae sauce. It was quite funny watching one of them retch. Once I asked one if he wanted some they all wanted some. They were like seagulls.
Anyway, welsh was good. We had another drawing competition on my table and I kept beating Lucas who does art for GCSE and I don't.
In IT Dan got the reggae sauce out again because I wanted to down it as a joke. As Dan got it out of his bag he spilt it all over the floor. I legged it to the toilets to get some toilet paper as Dan tried to wipe it up. I came just in time because Miss came right behind me. We couldn't wipe it up so the room stunk of reggae sauce for the rest of the lesson. Thank goodness Miss didn't notice.
Half way through IT a teacher came from the office and called me out of class to talk to me. Wondered what I'd done now. Turns out 4 year 8's had just been feeling ill and throwing up for the whole of their English lesson. The reggae sauce had upset their stomach. I said sorry but it wasn't my fault as they asked. Only just managed to stop myself from bursting out in laughter. Came into the class and told everyone the whole story. Everyone was in stitches of laughter including the sixth formers, Nina was one of those.
School ended and I managed to find the year 8's that were ill. The conversation went something like this.
"Enjoy you're reggae reggae sauce," said I.
"**** you," said one of them trying to look tough but actually looking quite ill.
"it was quite nice," said another with a sense of humour.
Hahaha. Classic. I enjoyed today. Didn't do revision today again but oh well.

Bug

I've been having the weirdest bug with Flash lately, whenever I save my .fla under a different name in the same folder for some reason none of my classes work anymore. There are no errors, no notices no nothing. Everything appears to be working as normal but it looks like none of my classes are linked to the external .as files anymore... Anyone had something similar before, or know what could be causing it? All the other .fla's in the folder stop working as well.

Ad Moneys

People who own blogs: how much money do you earn from the ads? I'm thinking of converting my shitty old flash site into a blog, mainly so it's easier to update, and so I stick adverts on there (I'm completely skint - I've got £22.15 in my bank and I'm in debt £60 and several people's birthdays coming up D: ). I know it's not instant, by any means, but I need some sort of money.

Also: does anyone else remember ages ago when we all had a giant game of some free FPS? We should do it again :D

Has anyone here used BISE (BeIntereactive Scripting Engine)? It's fantastic.. there's an AS3 version here which has a demo where you can play with the scripting language (a simpler version of AS2, basically). It allows you to hook objects and functions so it can be used for lots of things.

var fib = [1, 1]; for(var a=fib.length; a<10; a++){ fib[a] = fib[a-2]+fib[a-1]; } trace(fib);

Quite easy to use. Makes you just want to play with it o_o

Ironically, I just started working on my own scripting language in c++, that's meant to be little more than a math parser with ints, floats, and conditionals (with c++ syntax).

It works pretty well so far

int A = 3+1*2; float B = 2.1; int C = A * sin(B) + (A*B*B); D = A + B + C;

compiles to

SETMODE INT PUSHINTC 3 PUSHINTC 1 PUSHINTC 2 MULT ADD POPINT A SETMODE FLOAT PUSHFLOATC 2.1 POPFLOAT B SETMODE FLOAT PUSHINT A PUSHFLOAT B CALL SIN MULT PUSHINT A PUSHFLOAT B MULT PUSHFLOAT B MULT ADD POPINT C SETMODE FLOAT PUSHINT A PUSHFLOAT B ADD PUSHINT C ADD POPFLOATR D

D is a link to a float variable.

I outputed D after it ran it, and it output 33.1 like it should

next up is conditionals!

I've got that recorded and it'll be sent to the Leeds constabulary immediately.

Free Time

I've just finished my exams (GCSEs), as i'm sure many people here have and now i've got 12 weeks of diddly squat, so i have 2 choice. Get a job locally in no idea where likely using none of the skills i have and making very little doing so, however it's good for a CV. Or pump out a flash game every 1-2 weeks, which uses my skills and probably makes more cash but isn't something to add to a job application.

Any ideas, anyone done the latter in the past/present?
