Who fina-fucking-lly switched to AS3? I fina-fucking-lly switch to AS3. For now I'm using Eclipse SDK and Flex Builder, and they work great, but FB runs out after 60 days. I could've sworn it was free, unless there's a difference between Flex and Flex Builder. Anyway, if I run out of the trial, I'll get the free one if it's there. Do any of you know?

Still switching. Slowly. Tablet PC with my working copy of CS3 and all my samples still has PSU issues, so no progress on my Perspy engine (which I should redo in CS4... anyone want to loan me £150?)

Anyway, yes, there's a difference between FB and it's SDK. Flex is just a command line compiler available here, which should be configurable to run in your IDE of choice, whereas FB is a development environment that runs based on Eclipse.

In future, can all responders to people who make "I want to make a game but want free flash maker apps plz" stop recommending LiveSWF and recommend Flex instead? Keep recommending LiveSWF for animation work, naturally, but we may as well break the proto-coders minds early with Pandora's Flex rather than watching them drive themselves insane trying to code in third party tools.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I just wanted to let you guys know that I have been releasing my animation process in my thread, The Making of Little Aviator. Hopefully you guys check it out and take something away from it. I update it everyday until I release my short, Little Aviator. Leave comments and let me know what you think. :)

Instead, get the Flex SDK (can be found free on adobe.com) and use FlashDevelop as text editor.

I used to use FlashDevelop, although there were some glitches that happened with it, and I couldn't fix them, and didn't really feel like re-downloading it all. I guess I'll have to do that when I start something real and want it to keep going and not just have a 60 day trial. I'll do that soon so Nate and I can really get our game started, but this is good for testing things.

For people too lazy to read/understand this it means that flash files will now be able to send data peer to peer with just a connection to a server instead of sending data first to server and then the server sends to other peers. Faster and much cheaper bandwidth-wise!

For people to lazy to tell us what the link actually leads to before linking us to PDFs out of nowhere, I'll explain that no matter how amazing the Flash tech gets, the interest it generates will be overshadowed by talk of eating turkey.

I don't see how it's fun. Ten lines of code, awesome.

Well to convert binary to text it's 7 lines (5 if it wasn't a function), though I wrote 2 functions for that.. 1 to convert it and one to separate the binary into an array. Text to binary is simpler of course because I don't need to isolate each letter, so 10 lines (8 if it wasn't a function).

function binconv(bin:String):String { var num:Number = Number(bin.charAt(bin.length-1)); for (var a:Number = bin.length-1; a>0; a--) { num += Number(bin.charAt(a-1)) << ((bin.length)-a); } return String.fromCharCode(num); } function char2bin(str:String):String { var ret:String = ""; for (var a:Number = 0; a<str.length; a++) { var cur:String = str.charCodeAt(a).toString(2); while (cur.length != 8) { cur = "0"+cur; } ret += cur+" "; } return ret; } function bin2char(bin:String):String { var ret:String = ""; var bins:Array = [""]; var bincount:Number = 0; for (var a:Number = 0; a<bin.length; a++) { if (bin.charAt(a) == " ") { bincount++; bins.push(""); } else { bins[bincount] += bin.charAt(a); } } for (var b:Number = 0; b<bincount+1; b++) { ret += binconv(bins[b]); } return ret; }

I used AS2 because I've only got Flash 8 installed on Windows, Flex is on Linux.

That's the first thing I've done in actionscript in a long time and it has made me realise even more so how much I like C++ >_< It would be longer to do in C++ but it would be so much better. Declaring a simple number in AS2 is

var my_num:Number = 0;

Whereas in C++..

int my_num = 0;

And of course you have much more control, I'm not forced to use doubles when all I want to do is loop from 0-1000 :p
