People who joined Newgrounds before the age limit increase better have a Veterans Badge.

This will not just apply to Newgrounds. Any website you use where you may come across adult material of any sort will require these checks of you. At least, if they adhere to the regulations that Ofcom are setting out.

We'll know more about what will be involved in the forthcoming months.

At least it'll only affect the sign-up age and not the ability to view the site... still, It'll be a different place without younger artists in the community. We'll just have to do the best we can to enjoy what's here while it lasts!

The good news is that younger artists that have been registered before the change will still be able to upload art to newgrounds (I think)

For anyone wondering, the penalty for websites that aren't in compliance will be 10% of revenue or $18 million, whichever amount is larger. So basically $18 million in our case.

How in the name of balls is this legal? What legal power does a foreign government (or across state lines if in the united state) have over an international access website?

A lot of the state laws art targeting sites that are more than 1/3rd adult content, so NG isn't a target (yet) but we may have to implement ID checks in the future. Would really prefer a better age validation option to be available before we rush into anything like that.

This would also be a good reason to crack down on low-effort / promo spam adult content, to be sure we stay under 1/3rd.

This is a great change in my opinion. I don't think people realize just how young and immature a 13 year old often is. I think 16 is a reasonable minimum age for Newgrounds (just based on how I remember myself at 16). Hopefully this will help prevent a lot of stolen and AI tracks from being uploaded to the AP, as I've noticed that users who upload AI and stolen material tend to skew younger.

In the meantime, here are some things that have been going on this month, along with more plans for this year.

This month we raised the minimum sign-up age to 14 and we intend to gradually raise it this year until we settle on 16 as the minimum age. This keeps us more compliant with legislation in places like Australia and Florida but also feels like a good fit for Newgrounds. Australia may also be requiring ID checks, we’ll have to wait and see what they settle on and what they offer on that front later this year.

I'm excited for the pixel day results!

The underage thing is a real bummer. For the past I dunno 20+ years adults have systematically reduced spaces where kids and teens can hang out. Outdoor spaces are heavily monitored and places like malls and parks are closing or kicking teens out just for being there unsupervised. Now they've set their sights on the Internet. Outside of rigidly structured schools or sports there really isn't anywhere kids can just be kids.

As far as nasty PMs you might edit the opening post to remind folks there's a flagging option so they can alert staff to harassing PMs or creepy behavior! I'm surprised by people saying they got a mean PM and didn't know how to flag it

I created a account when I was 12 in 2019, BUT I didn't do anything aside from playing games, watch movies, listen to audio, looking at art and have favorites until 15 in early 2023 when I just posted art, and became more interactive on 16 later that same year.

Anyway, good thing I'm 17 now, and will be 18 later that year when this change happens.

Don't get your hopes too high about those other websites. They will probably enforce the same rules one day
then i'll probably quit then, i'm not giving my government my info just to see NSFW nor do I agree with it.

i'm afraid all those safety laws will accomplish is making people who want to view legal porn resorting to illegal sites just for the sake of not having to dox themselves just to see a drawing of full nudity...

I guess it's easier than forcing parents to actually take proper care of their children...

In the meantime, more stuff has been moving from M to A to try and avoid that, in particular because I don't like the idea of things like Salad Fingers and Madness being hidden by default.

This could be solved by a new method of filtering content, something which has been getting talked about some in the Supporter forum. It's a big overhaul though and would introduce its own headaches.

Will the BBS play a factor in the decision that newgrounds has more than 1/3rd content is porn? Like almost every @DrunkGecko thread is literal porn for example. Does that mean she and others like @DamnedByFate can't make dick jokes anymore?

I was wondering how NG would handle the age verification thing. I'm working on my own website to just host my art and other various projects and just figured I'd use a geoblocker or something for the states that pass that law, I'd hate to get arrested for drawing cartoon tits.

NG has never actually had to go to court over anything, we just get harassed occasionally. There were a few occasions where we had to pay out to photo licensing agencies but in most cases we're protected by the DMCA. The issue with people using unlicensed music is always a menace that hangs over us but I think we prove we make a reasonable effort to not allow that.

There was one time a patent troll named us in a lawsuit where they were suing several websites that combined audio with advertising, however we submitted prior art that showed we had ads alongside audio a year before their patent and a judge later threw out the case.

It's not you they're after. They're after the server owners and those hosting said servers. Unless you're drawing loli, you probably aren't a target.

Couldn't the BBS be under the same restrictions that the NG Chat has if worst comes to worst and it remains an exclusive 18+ feature?

I get this might not be the ideal or anything like that but honestly, speaking from experience I'd rather not have to put up with teenagers who think they know a thing or two about the world when all they really know is whatever happens in their parents basement and whatever dumb drama they deal with in school.
