looking back, I find funny how previous communities handled these age things

I used to play Everybody Edits 2, which had a chat system, but you could only say fixed predetermined statements, but it didn't prevent people from drawing swastikas or dicks around, or really just drawing phrases if it really had such determination

I guess that while minimum age to join will be 16, the E,T,M filters will remain available to non-users, right?

I joined Kongregate when I was 10, while the minimum age being 13. so I lied to be a 42-year-old man, and I would pretend to be such on chatrooms, but all moderators clearly knew I was just an annoying child.

I feel like 15 would be the right age to join Newgrounds for some reason. Maybe its because I'm turning 15 lol.

I was 19 in 2021, and joined the site in November that year (yes, I'm part of the FNF generation, even though I've played the Mario and Sonic fan-games during the 2000s).

Personally, I'd blame cancel-culture from the 2020s so far, especially the previous year. 2024 was the biggest year for cancel-culture, and is what led to all the online regulation stuff that you mentioned. When it comes to cancel-culture, please listen to what everyone (including the criminal) has to say, even if you think they're not in the right, before making a final conclusion.

To say the least, it sucks to not know what can get you canceled, what it means to be canceled or problematic, what else is illegal, or what else is creepy, disgusting or disturbing. It sucks to be ignorant and the internet is not a courtroom. Every fandom is terrible because it sucks to be over-educated, not be educated enough or not be educated at all. Who knows what else would be illegal or problematic 10 years from now, am I right?

Yes, I have dealt with cancel-culture before due to ignorance, and it was a horrible and traumatizing experience. Don't worry, I'm able to explain my ignorance as well as my side of the story; to prove that I'm in the right (I was pretty lucky). If this BBS post makes you uncomfortable, feel free to delete it. I'm just explaining my perspective on cancel-culture, and why people harass each other and think they have the right to do so.

To any creator that is reading this, educate your audience and followers if you can. I feel that commentary videos, documentaries, and call-out posts create anxiety rather than educate others.

At 1/29/25 10:00 AM, TomFulp wrote:Flash Forward kicks off on February 1st! If you’d like to help with the prize pool, please use the donation option on our Supporter page and PM me a heads up that you donate towards Flash Forward.

In the meantime, here are some things that have been going on this month, along with more plans for this year.

This month we raised the minimum sign-up age to 14 and we intend to gradually raise it this year until we settle on 16 as the minimum age. This keeps us more compliant with legislation in places like Australia and Florida but also feels like a good fit for Newgrounds. Australia may also be requiring ID checks, we’ll have to wait and see what they settle on and what they offer on that front later this year.

Existing accounts will be grandfathered, meaning we won’t be deleting accounts that joined before the change. If you are an artist who was hoping to participate on NG but are too young, please keep honing your craft, we look forward to seeing you here some day!

We’ve also changed the PM system, so that sending images via PM is now a Supporter feature. Reasons for this are people abusing the system with shock photos, the potential for creepy stuff happening and to better comply with the UK Online Safety Act.

The next round of updates will make it so you can't PM a minor account unless they follow you, message you first, or are friends with you. This is also in line with UK regulatory guidance but also for the best overall.

If you live in the UK there is more excitement on the way. Starting in July, we will be required to verify your age in order to toggle the Adult filter. There is currently no way we can do this without charging you money and we’re not keen to do that via Paypal or Stripe. Ideally a better option will arrive in the months ahead, such as a UK digital ID that we can check for free.

Various states and countries are rushing into age verification laws that are a total mess and a burden for everyone involved; no one wants to show their ID to random websites. We personally hope progress is made with the Digital Age Assurance Act (DAAA), which would require device-level age verification. This means you would verify your age once on your phone and on your personal desktop PC / Mac profile, at which point it could pass a true or false value to apps and websites. This makes so much more sense than what is happening now and would allow sites like NG to verify age in a consistent, simple and costless way.

In other news…

Pixel Day winners will be announced next month, probably after the Best of January. Please take some time to enjoy, vote on and review the Pixel Day entries!

The NG Documentary Kickstarter is almost to $50k out of the $80k goal, please consider contributing to its success!

Expect some downtime today around 1pm EST as the site undergoes a number of structural changes.

@TomFulp and all of the mods thank you for keeping this site safe. You're doing God's work man. Although its sad to see that this means new users that are under 14 (or later under 16) wont be able to use newgrounds for awhile, its for the best. I'm just glad that I'll still be able to have fun on Newgrounds regardless.

Some of these changes, yeah, they suck, but at the end of the day you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do to keep Newgrounds from getting blacklisted for certain users.

That said, making image PMs a Supporter-only feature feels like an overreaction. Couldn’t you just temporarily ban people who abuse the system instead? Lately, it seems like more and more features that were once free are being locked behind a paywall. I’d much rather see new, exclusive perks developed for Supporters rather than artificial limitations that mainly exist to curb trolling.

Yup, people sometimes send gore pics to harass people.

... Jesus, i didnt know some people were THAT edgy.

Oh trust me, a long time ago before I had a newgrounds account someone actually sent me photos of Lemon Party and Goatse when I was 12. This was back in 2008 and to be totally honest I'm not surprised this kind of thing happens on here.

Personally, I'm actually all for these changes and thats mainly because of a situation I was forced to report to the staff. Without naming whom was involved, I will say it was a mess and I genuinely hope that it does not happen again.

the GNAA (Trolling group) set up a website where using JavaScript would spam windows and play audio clips "Hey guys! I'm watching gay porno!" and then send to everyone in your outlook contacts a link to the website along with a text version of the audio.

(Sorry, I can't find the button to do a proper reply/quote)

Funny you mention it, because I can vividly remember getting linked to that exact website here on NG back in around 2007, when I was 12. It was of course via the nimp.org proxy where you could fill the first part of the URL with anything, to make it look more legit. In this case I had been asking for Madness Combat sprites.

I was on a Mac so not all of the malicious features of that website worked. For example the e-mail thing didn't work at all, and I heard that it had a script that prevented you from pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del on Windows but I was able to force quit the browser easily on a Mac despite the browser windows and audio getting spammed to all hell (my parents thankfully couldn't hear it, I kept the volume as low as it would go).

Some time ago I came across the source Javascript code for a fair few of those old 2000s shock sites and I discovered that GNAA's site had basically plagiarized or copied the code from another early 2000s prank website, youareanidiot.com, which was a lot less graphic in nature (the only content being a simple looping animation of smileys on a black and white flashing background with an audio clip of a jingle going "you are an idiot, hahahaha"). But still malicious through a very simple JS function that the coder titled "playBall" to duplicate and move the browser windows across the screen like a bouncing ball. This exact function with that exact wording was retained in its entirety in the GNAA source code.
