One of the difficulties that comes with big collabs like this is that you'll work with a range of different contributors, some of which are professionals and some of which are just starting out. As far as compiling goes, I would absolutely love it if every part of the collab was mixed to perfection but realistically, there will be people who have no clue what mastering entails or how to export their stems properly.

That's... actually one of the reasons I offered! Years ago I used to be so shy of my mix/master/general ineptitude that I just DIDN'T participate in ANY group projects. Call it stage fright I guess. Just leaving the offer open for anyone who doesn't feel 100% confident in their ability to loudenize and prettify their beats.

This got a little messy 10 years ago and I was forced to just deal with it. In the end I sacrificed quality of the mix in order to ensure that we finished our song at all. That being said, I intend to work as hard as I can and I also super appreciate your efforts to make this collab the best it can be! I think it's really generous of you to offer mixing people's songs! But yeah, at the same time, I wouldn't want you to have unrealistic expectations ;)

For sure, I can imagine that. I wouldn't want to be the guy mixing 20+ sets of stems -- granted small stems. This is kinda what I do now on the regular as an on and off again sound enginner for the Legend of Korra fandub. It requires quite a few revisions and does get messy!

That makes a lot of sense, I think we've all been faced with that stigma in one way or another and I definitely still don't feel very confident with my mixing skills after all these years myself haha. It do be scary to ask questions for fear of looking stupid.

Oof yes, sounds like you have a lot of experience in that department! The way we mixed it last time was by taking everyone's parts, assembling them together, and assigning individual mixer tracks to each of them. Every part was mixed starkly different though, so besides automation and other such bandages, each track was treated as a master and the goal was to make the mix sound a lot more cohesive. By the end, the actual master track only had some light compression on it haha. I still have the files if you want to take a look. I'm really curious if your approach would be any different!

I have less than you think, but enough to know the hassle of mixing even just different mics and skill levels of vocal performance is crushing. I can't imagine an entire EP length collab!

That's an interesting way to tackle it. I imagine you'd have to approach that like a CD album cut into multiple tracks. But today in the era of streaming that's rare.

I've not tried a MUSICAL collab of this size myself, but my first instinct would be NOT to make them sound sonically consistent; each part of the collab is a separate movement of the orchestra, and each genre needs a different treatment and mix in order to shine. Now, if they were all the same genre, I would say yes, go for consistent!

In the case of a collab like this, I would mix them all separately, probably master them all separately but pay special attention to each transition so that they popped. If applying a single compressor to the entire collab, I would have a LOT of automation to do. Some creative FX application and cuts can be done in these transitions. Think DJ set style. But with everyone giving stems, this is a LOT of pressure on a single engineer to do in a short amount of time!

I would only consider trying to tone-match the mixes/masters IF the collabs actually ran over top of one another, like a big multi artist freestyle rap (and even then they all have unique vocal chains and hooks). Can you imagine a collab where we each wrote in the same genre, the same chord progression and structure, and the producer rotated every few bars? That would be a definite case where I'd take the approach you mentioned. (and it sounds cool af)

Sorry for all the updates but I think I'm happy with this version, don't think I want to put too much more work into it. I'll revise later if I need to better jive with my neighbors <3

This is the basic structure & idea of what my part will be, it is on G Locrian, I've not mixed it much yet, so it sound rough at the moment, but thought it was a good idea to upload it so I can get some feedback.

WIP of my part

Also I think it sounds better at around 150 BPM, so, is it viable to put it at that tempo instead of 160 without damaging the over-all structure of the collab?

And about the transition bars, is it one shared bar to transition between each part, or does each part get 1 intro and 1 outro bar?

For last, I thought that a sustained G (or G#/G flat) could lead well into the intro of my part, though it would need some work to make it smooth, but I don't mind doing it.

Speaking of which, does the intro work, or would it be better for it to be different?

Ah yes, I agree! I guess what I meant was "consistent enough". As in a "not so different that transitions start clashing" kind of way.

Sounds great! Yeah, I don't think I'll be dropping in any extra sound effects but some DJ tricks could really work. The old project made use of reverb and delay sometimes in order to taper some endings into better transitions :)

Ohhh that sounds awesome! You'll be happy to know @VariableGR finished his part already and the transition between your parts sounds really good!

Locrian eh? That's very brave haha! I'm really liking it so far. These are great chords and the distortion really adds to the spooky and "deranged" feel off it all. You're definitely heading the right way with that! If you're looking for feedback, I would love to see you add some accoustic guitar and vocals :)

The way it's supposed to work is the intro overlaps with the final bar of the previous song. After your intro has played, you get 8 bars to compose your part. So you're not supposed to compose beyond that point but I encourage you to leave a remainder, so your song doesn't cut off too suddenly. Also I'm sorry, but we're sticking with 160 BPM!

Currently I have 8 bars of 4/4. Could I extend that to 9 or not?

Upon closer inspection I'm noticing that your .wav file has the exact length of a 4/4 song if it were 9-bars long at 160 BPM haha. Technically you're following the rules here so perhaps I should have been clearer with my instructions. To be more specific: You get 1 bar (4 metronome clicks) to write a short intro, then 32 more clicks to compose the rest of your song. You're not supposed to compose anything beyond that point but it's fine if your .wav file extends beyond that. In fact, I prefer if your song gradually fades into silence over suddenly cutting off!

Now for some math I guess.

The rules say you get 8 bars at a 4/4 time signature, which means your song amounts to 32 metronome clicks (4x8=32). Add one more bar for the intro (4x1=4) and you'll end up with 36 clicks. That's 9 bars in total. Most contributors have been using this method.

You've decided to use 4 bars of a 7/4 time signature on the other hand (7x4=28) and didn't include an intro (4x0=0). In other words, you've used up a total of 28 clicks for your composition so far, which is 8 counts shorter than usual.

Hopefully that makes sense!

Funny I had only 8 bars in my LMMS project file, but I guess because I forgot to export as loop it became longer lol. I'll create a short intro and expand on the conclusion a bit and then resubmit. I hope that's okay.

I added a 1-bar intro and expanded my tune to 9 bars instead of just 8. So, we have 1+9 = 10 bars here. Visual proof in case anyone is curious:

Probably a good thing to keep in mind is that your last note will hit at the start of the next section. I like how it sounds right now but we'll have to see if this doesn't make for an odd transition later on. I'm guessing there is probably nothing to worry about!

There's also quite a bit of decay coming from your reverb at the end of your waveform there, but it abruptly cuts off at the end. Next time, please leave a few more seconds so it can taper out naturally. This will really help us when putting the entire song together :)

And man, I used to struggle with bass a lot. If I were to give you any advice with that, it's probably got more to do with the composition than the actual mix! Something I like to do nowadays as a first step is determine which of my notes is going to be my lowest note (for example, a real double bass typically spans from E1 to G3), then I'll stick as close to the lowest notes as my composition will allow me, creating basslines that often sacrifice melodic range by keeping my melodies within the span of an octave (if it fits the song). Right here, I'm noticing your bass is hitting a lot of high notes. But the higher these notes go, the more precious bass frequencies tend to get lost on the spectrum. And if you try to compensate for that by turning up the EQ, the bass most likely becomes too overwhelming once your bass reaches the lower notes. And I'm guessing that's probably the reason why you're struggling with your mix. Hopefully that makes sense :)

I'm confused. Is this intended as a contribution to the collab, or something that you just wanted to show to us? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Its not alot, and im still new to fl studio, any suggestions?

I mean, it's a start! I'll be honest though, I'm a little troubled with your contributions so far. You claimed this part on the 4th of January and immediately shared a beepbox song that didn't adhere to the rules. Now after about 2 weeks, you announce that you're new to FL Studio. As the organizer, this isn't exactly what I was hoping to hear. I prefer contributors to at least be a little familiar with their DAW before they join the collab, so that's a bit of a problem... Breaks my heart honestly, I think you're a really promising musician but I believe it's better if I give your part to someone else... I'm really sorry about this.
