It's not really generalising either. I've read a lot about Black Metal as it happens. The fact that he isn't being serious doesn't prove that Black Metal is pretty damn stupid. If thats the case, and if you want to believe shit that easily and run with a generalisation as if it is pure fact for every individual or band or fan, then metal is just ran by failures and lunatics and no one should listen to it. However, as a bunch of metalheads here, we could easily see beyond what makes news, linking to an obvious culprit, and what the music has always been about.Or whatever the reason it is for a genre.
A few norwegian black bands that do some shit for their culture doesn't represent everything about black metal. Compare tons of Death metal bands, and don't tell me they all write and sing and believe in the same thing and then have a huge party as one collective and practice the unprofounded!
I never followed Black metal much, but I can still say there is way a lot more to it than a few big names you heard caught burning churchs awhile for religious statements against christianity. You are caught up in a media outlook on it, which is the same reason why most parents get freaked out if their kids listen to any type of metal. Sure, there are a lot of bands in all genres that kinda stick to pretty blunt "insane" messages for real reasons they believe, but everything is perspective in the end. A crazy band or two doesnt make up for everyone.
And even I couldnt call black metal a crappy genre, for musical reasons, even though I hardly listen to it. They just have a sound Im not as appealed to as others, but I can respect a lot of elements to it, technical and musical wise. And even then is generalising. Since not all black metal sounds at all alike sometimes especially.

Obviously not. Some mainstream music often concentrates alot on popular culture, in places where they can earn respect under false pretences, such as charity work. I'm trying not to generalise by using different excuses. I've explored a lot of different music, and Black and Death metal have always repulsed me in various ways. But I haven't found as much crazyness in other forms of music as much as I have in Black Metal. I cant deny that general views of metal held me back for a long time, as I had beliefs that all metal was what the basic view of Black Metal is. Nobody can say that Black Metal isnt surrounded in a hoisin of crazy beliefs though, as well as metal in genral if im honest.
But to be fair, when you explore a new genre of music, you look at the big names. These are the sort of bands I checked out, and they all pretty much have similar beliefs, as in the ones im slating. And you get the fans of these bands who agree and talk some idiotic shit. If you're an underground black metal band which may represent the majority, unlucky. Why are they underground? The fans make up for alot of what is popular in black metal aswell.

My belief in this issue doesn't only concentrate on the culture of black metal. I dont think the music is good at all. Like I said, I checked out the popular black metal bands and I found them all to be awful. For example, Immortal dont have satanic themes and shit, but I still thought they were rubbish.
I dont think it can be justified to say that there is a need to listen to underground bands, as popular artists in any genre must be doing something right themselves, but unfortunately it doesnt appeal to me.
