I listened to Acid king. They were trippy but kool. Also, I checked out candlemass' bewitched. I wasnt a fan of the vocals sounded like some meatloaf wannabe. Hehehe the guitars were pretty righteous though.

Being a much more informed (about bm) metaller than you, I'll disagree with you. Venom were about as black metal as my dad is a republican. A registered republican, but democratic in every way. First wave bm is still black metal. Take a look at Hellhammer, Bathory, or Sodom (kinda). All three were actual black metal bands (except Sodom, which was black/thrash), not thrash labeled as black metal. Venom is just mediocre thrash labeled as black metal because they wanted a shtick.

I have recently got into this russian black metal band called Sinful. It's melodic and very classical. You can DEFINITELY tell it's from russia, because you can hear the style of the works of several composers in it. It's got that dramatic, poignant style, and the intro and outro on the cd Omyt (the whole CD's in russian) are actually listenable and can pass for classical music. The guitar leads are wonderful and the keyboards are orgasmic.

I'd fetch a link, but metal archives is down at the moment. I can zip it if anybody wants me to send it over msn/aim.
