But I do know I like their music. So what if I don't know too much about metal? I don't know much about country, rock, jazz, rap, and the like.

Wow, So heres the deal, Metal is metal. Depends what metal you listen to, whether it be oldies such as black sabbath and dio (creators of metal) judas priest, pantera, hammerfall, metallica, megadeth, etc

Well everyone thinks that being popular means it sucks, when in fact all that underground music, which while may not be bad, just doesn't sell as much as commercial music due to the marketing it doesn't get. But instead of just excepting simple concepts people pretend there music is better than others when it would probably be considered commercial if it had the right marketing.
