Yes those three do count as metal. (although Nightwish is more power metal than gothic, not that it matters)

For a general guide on what we consider to be metal, check out the Metal Archives. If you can find a band on there it's metal.

On the other hand, Asgarður's new full length is gonna fucking OWN!!! The last song, The Finale: Ragnarok is gonna be long, epic, and a wonderful closer. If you liked Queen of Fimbulwinter, you'll like these songs. The only difference is that the the other 4 songs are going to be more epic, more melodic, and have more keyboards.

Janick Gers also played on Brave New World if you've heard that.

I think Dance of Death is very good actually, not the best, but certainly not their worst effort. It has a good number of very good songs on it, especially Dance Of Death, Face in The Sand and Journeyman.

On a different note, Black Anarchist has taken a disctinctly un-metal turn, our guitarist switched to bass and is trying to pepper random 70's FM radio-esque riffs in his song-writing(which is a serious burden seeing as he's our main songwriter) and we hired an alto-saxophonist.

I knew that, but I haven't heard Brave New World, either.

Sweet. Most of the local bands are punk or really accessible black metal, which pisses me off greatly. In my mind, bm should be obscure, otherworldly, grand, and esoteric. I hate it when bm bands become mundane; I love the bm that's majestic.

Personally, from experience, it's hard to do more than 3 guitar tracks without it sounding like mush. And I mean separate guitar tracks, not just overdubbing. 2 is really all that's necessary in most situations that I do. In my earlier (read: crappier) work, I would try to cram in more than two, but when you do, you gotta a. have a GOOD rhythm track, and b. have a minimalist lead. You really have to do things right when you have 3 or more guitar tracks.
