you're right. EP's usually consist of about 4 songs. give or take.
EP and LP stand for things...I don't think its as simplistic as a "shorter cd", but IDK...

black sabath started so fucking much, alice cooper too really.. oldskool stuff (although I do not listen to any, the music is stil ace concidered when it was produced and the audience it was aimed at).
remember where the magic started, do not forget your roots!

They might have started a bunch of shit, but they're REALLY not my style. I prefer much darker forms of music. But I say be openminded, don't limit yourself.

black and death metal for the win really.. but that is MY opinion and if someone wants to listen to pop music and destroy their brain that is fine too.
On Black Sabbath and Alice (Alice...That says it all...): They might have started a lot, but they just are too played out, much too popular, and both frontmen (Ozzy and Alice) are living-dead old men.
On a lighter note, I picked up Hellfire from 1349 and Catch-33 from Meshuggah today...Both cds kick ass.
The only Mainstreem metal bands a like are Metallica (80s stuff), Iron maiden, and Judas Priest(songs from thier Pain Killer album).

Honestly, Im not that into alot of death or Black metal. Mabye because I grew up on Sabbath and Alice. Mabye its also because Im a guitarist, and appreciate alot of the shit that isnt 4 chords and a bunch of roaring.

True, but plenty of death metal bands do, and especially the lighter ones.
I don't think older bands like Black Sabbath or Alice Cooper possess the technique or the atmosphere of today's bands. They aren't my style. I don't think they suck ass though, there are a lot of worse ones (hell, I even like Iron Maiden a bit), and they did help pioneer metal as a whole. I just wish they would step out of the limelight and give it up. A lot of classic metal bands are old men, all washed up, and havent put out anything good in years (Metallica, I'm talking to you). The classics should stay classic, regardless of whatever style they are.

Correction: MOST black metal bands have solos. Ulver, Dissection, Mayhem, Immortal, Emperor, Ragnarok, Borknagar, Burzum, Dawn of Dreams, Gorgoroth, etc...

And to the people that care, I am starting a new project... In fact I was asked by Andreas from Tomb of..., Frozen Glare and some other bands that have cds out to join as a singe, keyborder and Harpe player (yes I am a harpe player as well) in some Doom/folk/Epic metal project. The violinist and rythme guitarist of Lacrimas Profundere will probably join too. Plus I pay for nothing, they offered to finance all the recordings and stuff. I am sooo bloody happy that I could jump out of the window screaming I CAN FLY. It had been 8 months now since the last time I went recording. Oh gods I am happy.

Holy fuck! You gotta be one hell of a keyboarder and harpe player :) Can't wait to hear that, I'm just amazed because Tomb of... and Lacrimas Profundere are actually pretty well known...good luck! :)
