On this day four years ago, I was at a Gwar concert. Opening for them were US Bastards and Ghoul, both of which surprised me with how good they were.

And of course, I took the "after" picture when the show was done. I very desperately needed a shower lol.

Some black metal seems appropriate for a cold and grey Sunday. Two of my favourites. Nice long, melodic songs. Wild Autumn Wind is particularly beautiful.

Gonna go more than a little obscure here with a couple songs from Japanese band, Volcano. I randomly stumbled upon Warrior's Play in like 2011-2012 and really liked it. Actually finding and buying the album was quite a bit of work, but I managed to do it and still listen to it every now and then. Just wish they were more easily findable over here. They've put out a whole bunch of albums since I discovered them, but apart from a few YouTube videos, I haven't been able to listen to them.

Been on a power metal kick lately, can't believe I've only heard of Domine up until recently. Legit been jamming this song so much, fuckin rocks, speed/power at it's finest

Also here's a bit of cheese while I'm at it, this band slaps to high heavens, still gotta be in my top 10. Ngl, I def have soft spot for "synthy" bands just coz of the Megaman X OSTs lol

And heres some newish blood. Fellowship hits the cheese meter just right.

I've always been a big fan of folk metal or at the very least bands that take traditional musical elements and incorporate them into metal. While most of the genre is focused on European tradition (especially Norse/Celt), there do exist bands that incorporate styles from places you wouldn't associate with metal.

A great example of this is Al-Namrood, a black metal band from of all places, Saudi Arabia. I completely dig how they blend traditional Arabic sounds with black metal. It hits me in just the right place.

(PS, I so desperately miss the Paganfest tours.)

Used to listen to some Battlelore too, when I went into a symphonic metal phase, when I discovered Nightwish haha.

I'm sure I've listened to a bunch more songs that was Tolkien inspired songs. By proxy of being a Blind Guardian fan, I really should know more but Lord of the Rings, but I'm still not too savvy on the lore haha.

Also, one of the homies, Underking, released this single this year. Based on "The Battle of Pelennor Fields", I believe. He commissioned me to do the artwork for it :)

On this day eight years ago, I was at an Overkill show. Warbringer was the opener making it an absolutely solid thrash night. I miss going to concerts so very much.

They had 2 NYC dates on this tour and I went to the first one. This chick I went there with had quite a few drinks and kept asking me, "Why are you so cute?"

Besides the pure thrashiness of the show itself (this was one of the few shows where I watched from above and wasn't in the pit), I want to briefly go back to the girl, who at the time I saw for a few months. I already am cute but I guess it's even more obvious when you're wasted.

We fooled around a bit in the back of a cab, went to my place (but not before I rang someone else by accident)...the rest is history.

Fun fact: I caught a drumstick during Falconer's set at Wacken 2015. Ended up slipping and falling in the mud, but it was 100% worth it. It is my most prized object I've ever come away with at a concert. Mainly because of where I got it.

Gonna mix up metal and opera with this adaptation from Madame Butterfly that still captures the sadness and longing that the original aria has. It's an absolutely beautiful song.

And now some symphonic stuff from Skalmold that is just awesome.

I really do miss being able to go to the symphony or opera. Hopefully I can get back again soon. If you've never been, you owe it to yourself to go at least once.

Video below isnt opera, but I do love it when bands get a full orchestra type thingy for their performances

Love this performance to bits,

Also, I've tried searching for videos of Nightwish performing with a full orchestra, to my surprise I havnt found any :/

Power metal lends itself very well to an orchestral accompaniment.

Then of course, there's stuff like Apocalyptica's Metallica by Four Cellos. I was lucky enough to see it performed live back in 2017 and it was amazing. Even my non-metal liking wife went with me and enjoyed it. You haven't lived until you've seen Battery performed on a cello.

Talk about jumping into the deep end lol. I dig Bloodbath, but don't really know too much about them apart from the random song that pops up on either my Spotify or YouTube feeds. I did see them live once, but it was at a festival and I wasn't really paying too much attention at the time.

If you're looking for some Lorraine, Blind Guardian is the band you're looking for. They have an entire album basically narrating the events of the Silmarilion, kind of like a musical.
