Welcome to the group. Tell us some bands you like and why.
epica
Did you ever listen to the Kamelot album of the same name? That, and The Black Halo were what got me into both bands at the same time. Roy Khan is probably one of my all time favorite vocalists due to those two albums.

Well, fuck. After mentioning it yesterday, I had to go back and rock out to The Black Halo and Ghost Opera.

Kamelot - Anthem
Kamelot - March of Mephisto (Live - Belgrade, Serbia)
Kamelot - Soul Society
Kamelot - III Ways to Epica
Kamelot - Somewhere In Time Feat. Simone Simons

Shit is so cash. Truly some comfy symphonic metal they've made.

Anyone here into DSBM? I had my DSBM phase mostly last year but now the only bit of it I've been into is Xasthur. I fuckin love Xasthur - nobody puts their heart and soul into black metal like he does, he's able to take all those fucked up feelings and recreate them into music. You can almost feel what he feels when you listen to his stuff. I wish he didn't stop doing black metal, but it's good that he's not continuing just to sell out if he's really not into it anymore.

otherwise, Nocturnal Depression, Thy Light, Forgotten Tomb, Anti, Veil and others I like. Anyone here into it as well?

Response to Metal Hell 2016-07-02 16:17:32

I ended up on a sort of music depression where everything I heard sounded shit. Fallujah is the first band I've been able to get into in a long time. Any other bands like them?

Listening to their latest album - it's good. Have you heard any Septicflesh or iwrestledabearonce's latest? Those did it for me.

I'm for symphonic black metal, like Dimmu Borgir.

A few metal genres/styles/scenes I'd like to see become a thing.

Metabilly - Basically rockabilly's and psychobilly's metal cousin, influenced by bands like Volbeat. It would have at least three distinct subgenres, such as thrashabilly, deathabilly, and blackabilly. Thrashabilly would be an even heavier version of metabilly. Deathabilly would be metabilly with death metal influences. Blackabilly would be metabilly with black metal influences.

Digital metal - Imagine if bands like The Prodigy, Pendulum, Celldweller, etc turned into full fledged metal bands. Digital metal would pretty much be an offshoot of industrial metal (just like cyber metal). It would be metal music with heavy emphasis on EDM genres such as house, trance, dubstep, drum n bass, hardcore, etc. Zardonic would be a fine influence for this sort of movement.

Brutal thrash metal - Even though BTM is a very selectively used term, I'd love it to be whole new style of thrash metal. Bands like Demolition Hammer and Morbid Saint would be prime influences for this sub-subgenre. It would be unlike death/thrash metal because while that is just thrash metal mixed with death metal, brutal thrash metal is thrash metal put to it's highest extremes.

I wasn't crazy about either, though iwrestledabearonce sounded a lot like UneXpecT, which and they're damn good musicians.

I feel like this could already be a thing.

A genre I would be interested in seeing would be, Speed Doom haha. It's something that cannot exist because of how wildly different Speed Metal and Doom are and how much they cannot go together. But it'd be pretty interesting to hear.
And don't say High On Fire or Lair of the Minotaur. They're Trash Doom.

To whoever feels like listening to it, the band Salem's Pot released their newest album yesterday.

I've had a copy of it for 3 months due to snatching up a test pressing and I gotta say, this has got to be one of if not my favorite album so far all year this year and maybe one of my favorites from this whole decade so far. And there have been a far amount of albums that have been pretty damn good.

If you want to hear it, you can find it on YouTube here.

Very very good mix of Heavy Psych, Doom, and Stoner Metal. I'd highly recommend if you're into bands like Electric Wizard, Uncle Acid, and just "retro" sounding Doom in the vein of Ogre with tinges of early Pentagram with a song that is straight up Country infused Stoner Rock that includes an organ that talks about losing your mind while trying to escape the devil and your sins but being unable to.

I've always liked the split between Xasthur/Leviathan. I've always enjoyed Thy Light and Veil. A few other bands such as Abyssic Hate, Striborg, Leviathan, Galdr, ColdWorld and Silencer have always stuck in my mind.

I listen to way too much Atmospheric Black Metal (and just BM in general) so I've not always kept up with DSBM.

New Lesbian album coming August 26th. If it's as good as Power Hor, it's worth getting for sure.

Funny, I know all of those bands (except for Galdr) and I forgot to bring them up. They all kick ass. But I agree with you, I had a DSBM phase at some point last year but it didn't last long before I went back to regular black metal, and atmospheric black metal. After a while DSBM becomes way too repetitive, the only one that doesn't to me is Xasthur, because it's not soft-sounding.

Satanic Warmaster and alike bands have been my favorite so far this year. Something about Finnish black metal just sounds so perfect.

Hello gents. I know I'm not active these days but I'm popping in to share one of my favorite 2016 pieces thus far, just in case any of you might like it as much as I do. I don't really know how to describe it genre-wise; it's more on the atmospheric side of things, but in a heavy way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8GadjOYlOw
http://sumac.bandcamp.com/

Also gonna +1 @HeavenDuff and his Mgla mention. I've found several bands that try to do what Mgla do, but they do it just right. Exercises in Futility is what got me into them, very much worth a listen.

Also also, I've mentioned them here before, but just in case you've forgotten them, Gatecreeper is a fantastic old school death metal band that is local to me that I've seen live twice now. They just got signed to a label and have an album scheduled to come out this year. Every song they've put out thus far is fucking gold as far as I'm concerned. Check em out!

It made more sense in my head.

If I had to nail it down to the country of music I listen to currently, I'd have to say it's mostly US black metal. I have no clue how many times I've listened to Leviathan, Xasthur or Judas Iscariot (along with the numerous other bands I could list, as I no longer keep track of them on last.fm)

A few other bands taking my interest currently are Winterheart (US), Mortis Mutilati (France) and Enisum (Italy)

Interesting, I usually think very lowly of US black metal but those 3 bands you mentioned happened to be some of my favorite. The last 3 you mentioned I've never heard of, but you have great taste so I'll check them out immediately.

Recent music related purchases I felt like sharing on here in case anyone cares enough to hear em.
Lots of Stoner, Doom, Sludge, and "retro rock" stuff.

Monolord - Lord of Suffering/Die In Haze

Holy Serpent - Temples (this was a pre-order and only one track is available at the moment)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncTtl00dbUM

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - Pusher Man/Remember Tomorrow (yes that IS an Iron Maiden cover)

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - Runaway Girls/Devil's Work (acoustic)

Bongripper - Hate Ashbury LP
That is the "redone" version that is only about 33 1/2 minutes long and only has 2 songs.

Cough - Still They Pray
https://cough.bandcamp.com/album/still-they-pray

Pyraweed (digital discography off bandcamp)

Hey guys! I'm kinda new to metal music as a long time electronic genres listener, so I don't know much about the right bands and sub-genres. The only thing I don't like in metal is the growling and screams, as they are just not for me. Can you recommend any 'heavy music - soft vocals' songs or good instrumentals? Thanks.

Well you know. Metal with "growling and screams" makes up only a small percentage of all metal music. And it's predominately in stuff like Death Metal, Black Metal, some Sludge, some Doom, etc.
My favorite metal genres are Doom and Stoner Metal. Sludge gets thrown in there too because the 3 go hand in hand....in hand.
Some bands you should check out in those genres would be:

Doom and/or Stoner Doom
Acid King
Bongripper
Reverend Bizarre (this is a playlist)
Sleep

Stoner Metal/Rock
Truckfighters
Kyuss

Sludge(ish?)
Baroness
Kylesa (this is also a playlist)

Anyone have anything else to add? Or recommendations for other songs/albums by bands listed?

you might wanna check out some traditional heavy metal bands like iron maiden, judas priest, yngwie malmsteen, black sabbath, accept, loudness, tank, tokyo blade, riot, crimson glory, and mercyful fate, or even early hair metal bands like dokken, ratt, and motley crue, as i consider their early work metal and good for getting into the genre. or you could check out modern power metal bands like edguy, iced earth, kamelot, power quest and rhapsody of fire.
