Ha I was just listening to that...it's not bad actually.
I know it's not technically metal (maybe more prog rock) but I'm so stoked for the new Haken album.

I dunno. Sounds like they're just done with each other. I've seen a few comments from people who saw them more recently saying they weren't putting on as good a show as they used to. Their last album was awesome, though.

I survived. Show was multiple shades of excellence despite the ample amounts of assbeating I took during Psychostick's set. They called me out right before a gag involving a straw hat, that was great. Hung out and shot shit with all of the bands after, anyone familiar with the Machine Shop knows it's a smaller, fairly intimate venue. I definitely was caught off guard with how good Urizen's set was. Very interactive, definitely worth a shot for anyone curious. They're about halfway through their tour, if anyone wants to try for it.

How did you feel about the last 2 or 3 songs on it? They felt more like standard J-pop than the mesh of Metal/Jpop they're aiming for. Not a bad thing, necessarily, just kind of felt out of place. Aside from Karate, I dug the album fairly well too. I think they're on tour right now, too.

Did you give as good as you got during the assbeatings? Meeting the band after a show is awesome.

I didn't like the last 3 songs. Thought it was just me. lol

A lot of black metal for me, actually.
I've been enjoying Mgla's music a lot lately. And if anybody in here doesn't know them yet, you would do well to fix that problem. They are an amazing Polish band! For real!
Mgla - With Hearts Towards None Part III
I've also been listening to that black/doom band Bathuska, Polish as well, and they are pretty damn amazing two.
I'd also like to give a listen to the new Vektor soon. If you guys like well-produced, well-mixed, pounding and riff driven prog thrash, this band is for you!

oldschool japanese metal band anthem, really good stuff.
Very surprised that there was no mention in here of Agalloch's break-up. It was made official about three days ago. And as far as I know, it was pretty much the decision of John Haughm to end it all, and the other guys disagreed with that decision.
Here's what Don Anderson wrote on his Facebook wall on the matter:
Dear Everyone,
Usually statements like these open with expressions of gratitude for the fans, friends, colleagues, and people we’ve worked with. There is a sort of form to the break-up letter that long-running bands produce: “thanks everyone that has supported us over the years, bought our records, came to our shows,” and so forth. Then the apologies arrive from fans, friends, and family members: “we’re so sorry to hear this. We hope you are ok.” But, I can’t start like that—it seems too mechanical. I can’t start that way because it is I who should apologize to all of you.
I am sorry you won’t ever hear new music from Agalloch. I am sorry our fans in Latin America, China, Russia, Japan, Australia, will never see us play. I’m sorry I won’t personally meet many of you after a show and talk about music, movies, school, and share a shot of bourbon. I’m really, really sorry because I had every intention of continuing.
This was not my decision.
I did not want this.
I still maintain it was not necessary.
I’m sorry it had to be this way. I am personally devastated and have not felt this level of grief since my father passed away ten years ago. So, if you are sad, upset, pissed, or bitter—I share these feelings with you. I know Agalloch deeply touched a lot of people. And I honor that by grieving in solidarity with all of you. Agalloch was an incalculable part of my identity and I’ll be walking as half a man for some time now.
I want to thank many people. I am terrified of forgetting anyone as my mind isn’t all that clear today. So, for now, I really want to thank the fans from the bottom of my heart. My favorite activity was meeting all of you after a gig, or before a gig. The spiritual connection you and I shared during a show was the closest I, an atheist, have ever felt to God. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
You might think our music helped you through the dark times in your lives, but all along you were helping me avoid the darkness.
Sincerely,
Don Anderson

agalloch was one of my favorite modern metal bands for sure.

Because Haughm is throwing a bitch tantrum? I don't know man... it's total crap to see Agalloch go like this. I know Haughm felt that the other members were too busy with their personal lives for the band, but the way all this went down is just... not cool.

Seems like the best bands break up, and the newer ones can never fill their shoes.

It's crazy, right? So many musicians have died so far this year... I can't believe it.
Nick Menza is one of my favorite drummers, if not my favorite. He's one of the musicians who first got me into metal, and more specifically into drumming, an instrument I overlooked way too much throughout most of my years of music listening.
Poor guy died at age 51...

With so many musicians dying, just imagine how many great songs we missed.

Nick Menza was a great drummer. I think he helped spread the influence of metal and the fans.

Did you ever listen to the Kamelot album of the same name? That, and The Black Halo were what got me into both bands at the same time. Roy Khan is probably one of my all time favorite vocalists due to those two albums.
