Agalloch are going to be up in Chicago but I don't want to go because it's in one of the bad parts of Chicago and I don't feel like getting mugged or something either on my way there or while I'm about to leave.
Septicflesh and Fleshgod Apocalypse are going to be playing at the same place too (those two on the same night) but even then I'm still not 100% willing to go. Hell Slough Feg are going to play there too!

What struck me about it is how catchy a lot of the vocal melodies are. It excels in that respect, but the music itself isn't that interesting.

Anyone heard the new Agalloch?

I finally listened to Agalloch's newest album (I still don't know why it took me so long) and I'm pretty happy with it. I've only given it one listen so far, though, so I know I'll have to listen to it many more times to understand it all. All I know is that it really made me feel like listening to it outside while staring at the stars with a good IPA or a good Imperial Stout in my hand, and that's a very good start for The Serpent & the Sphere Amazing stuff !!!

I've shared this post on the general, but since my whole list is mostly metal, I'll share it here two!

I was trying to expand my list of good music covers by good bands. I'm not looking for tribute bands to Maiden or Metallica, I don't really care about that kind of shit. No, I was thinking about great bands doing great covers of great tracks by other great bands. I have a little list, but I'd like others to thrown in a few more.
Mogwai's Punk/Rock Cody, covered by Deafheaven
Napalm Death's Suffer The Children, covered by Benighted
Judas Priest's Painkiller, covered by Death
Megadeth's Skin o' My Teeth, covered by Kalmah
Slayer's Mandatory Suicide, covered by Decapitated
Sol Invictus' Kneel To The Cross, covered by Agalloch
Black Sabbath's Solitude, covered by Ulver
Bathory's A Call from the Grave, covered by Balrog
Kiss' Detroit Rock City, covered by Hammerfall
Metallica's Blackened, covered by Between The Buried And Me
King Crimson's Three of a Perfect Pair, covered by Between The Buried And Me
Pantera's Cemetary Gates, covered by Between The Buried And Me
Billy Idol's Rebel Yell, covered by Children Of Bodom
Iron Maiden's Aces High, covered by Children Of Bodom
Rockwell's Somebody's Watching Me, covered by Warmen
Mastodon's Black Tongue, covered by Feist

Feel free to contribute!

I like Death's version of Possessed's "The Exorcist" better than the Possessed version (which is kick-ass even with the cheesy synth opening, I'll admit). No vocals, but you can't have everything I guess.

Some great covers:

Opeth's Harvest, covered by Xanthochroid
Burzum's Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit, covered by Take
Mayhem's Life Eternal, covered by Gorgoroth
Darkthrone's Quintessence, covered by Anorexia Nervosa

And as much as I dislike virtually everything else by them, Fleshgod Apocalypse did an absolutely killer cover of At the Gates' Blinded by Fear.

I'll check these out.

Also, while we are talking about black metal, Sigh's cover of Black Metal by Venom is pretty good.

You didn't like Oracle? This album was absolutely phenomenal. They fell for the dumb "symphonic" death metal gimmick afterward, but Oracle was killer!

Never checked it out but yeah that's the exact reason why I don't like Fleshgod haha, too much stupid symphonic bullshit that doesn't fit their type of music. I'll check that album out though, thanks man.

It's well worth it, seriously. I've given up on them when Agony came out, but Oracle was a masterpiece in it's own right.

I'm fairly certain you've heard the Deep Purple and Black Sabbath on there though. So you can just skip those.
Also, Sleep's version of Snowblind is almost on par with the original if you can believe that. Seriously it is an amazing cover.
Al's voice just fits it very very well.

Freakin' good, right?!

Also, if you get the chance to get your hands (most likely not in the physical kind of way) on any of the material by Tyrannic Ethical Reconstruction, I'd recommand doing so. It was one of the project that preceeded Fleshgod Apocalypse. There was like, three of the original members of FA in this band before they disbanded and formed FA. It's also pretty good, and it's a damn shame that they didn't release all these demo tracks on a widely distributed full-lenght. You most likely won't be able to find a downloadable version of the album, but you never know!

The singer.

I'm still baffled by such dumb comments. Are you trying to bond with us? You can't possibly expect to be welcomed in a metalhead community if you adopt the dumb pop fan and uneducated anti-harsh vocals position. It still baffles me to see individuals who are so prompt to try and discard themselves as valuable interlocutors. You just look like these old farts who whine that these vocals are just random scream, even though you have no clue what techniques it takes and all the practice requiered to reach the lows and highs of screams, shrieks, growls, gutturals, etc. If you don't know about this stuff, why the hell do you need to act like a douche? Especially to people who are openly fans of this kind of stuff.

It's like going in Chinatown and whining about asians...

You are making a bit of a scene because you really misconstrued what he said initially. If I were you guys I'd just settle it over PM.

Inviting challenge: I'm trying to remember the name of a thrash metal band and I can't remember anything about their song titles, album titles, or their name itself except for that it started with a "D" and had to do with something morbid. One word, Desolation? Desecration? Destruction? I've looked em all up on MA and found nothing that matches it, unless I missed something. All I remember is this yellowish/greenish skull looking evil on their album cover. I found them a long time ago (just when I was getting into metal) and I didn't pay much mind to them. Was looking to relisten to see if they were worth anything.

You can't throw in your grain of salt and then ask us to stop talking about something. Also, I didn't misconstrue what he said. He said the vocalist looks like he's shitting himself. Which is just one of the many things that people say to mock vocalists who use aggressive and harsh vocals. All he really said after that is that "it was a joke". So even if it was indeed a joke, I didn't misconstrue what he said in anyway.

Only thing that comes to my mind according to the lyrical themes you mentioned is Possessed and Morbid Saint, but these band names do no start with a D

You best guess is still to look through that list and look under the bands starting with D. You'll find them eventually...

I don't know why, but I just really like it when bands post their studio pictures. To me, at least, it feels a little like an "inside look" on their music and the ambiance in which it was created.

Also, I can't predict what will happen to Om or High On Fire or even Neurosis with Sleep's new material coming out. It doesn't mean that it will automatically affect the other projects negatively. So let's just hope that's what happens.

I also wanted to let you guys know that Musk Ox's newest album named Woodfall is finally out! If none of you know who they are, they're a band that's been touring with Agalloch for a few years now. It started out as a solo project by the multi-instrumentalist musician (but mainly classical and acoustic guitar) Nathanaël Larochette, but grew out to be a three-piece chamber neofolk band (with post-rock and atmospheric metal à la Agalloch influences). Also, Nathanaël is the one playing the interludes on Agalloch's newest album The Serpent & The Sphere.

If you guys are interested, here's the track Above The Clouds from the album Woodfall!

Interesting band. I don't know if I'd listen to their music very often, but I like the way they manage to add core elements to their metal without making it absolutely atrocious.
