Yeah same here. I like getting the "inside look" at what the band is doing at the moment.

Also, I can't predict what will happen to Om or High On Fire or even Neurosis with Sleep's new material coming out. It doesn't mean that it will automatically affect the other projects negatively. So let's just hope that's what happens.

Yeah I suppose you're right. Though OM are currently recording stuff and I wanna say HoF are doing so as well. So I don't know how they'd be able to juggle all of this shit at once. Then again this is Al Cisneros and Matt Pike we're talking about. Those two are fucking beasts when it comes to this stuff.
Speaking of Al. He's seeming to be losing some of that weight he put on after Sleep broke up. It's a good thing.

Yeah, they blend a lot of genres while still sounding pretty original, I think.

but anyways

I saw BTBAM and Meshuggah last night in NYC. I've seen them both before, but damn it's a killer show every time. Meshuggah even played stuff from "Contradictions Collapse," which they probably haven't played since 1990, so that was kind of a trip.

You can't just stop playing stuff from the albums that helped you grow a fanbase in the first place. That's kind of a dick move to the fans who've been following you ever since the beginning. I do hope they'll keep playing stuff from their early years in their future tours.

I'm also quite sad I missed BTBAM and Deafheaven when they last came in Montreal together... such a shame...

I was gonna go to that show but I couldn't afford it, and I only like a couple of songs by Meshuggah so there's not much of a point. Plus Meshuggah fans are usually tools.

On a side note, anyone else love Cattle Decapitation as much as I do?

Just got my ordered copies of Remission and Leviathan in the mail today. So with that I now officially have all 6 of Mastodon's albums and Call of the Mastodon. I got Once More Round The Sun on the 24th.
My opinion on OMRTS is that it's good but I can honestly say that I liked The Hunter more than it. I mean after a few listens I started liking it more than I did on my first listen, but all the songs felt kinda "samey" to me within the first couple listens. There were a few stand out tracks though. High Road, Asleep In The Deep, Diamond In The Witch House, and The Motherload.
As stated before about it here it features Scott Kelly providing guest vocals and he does so on Diamond In The Witch House. Valient Himself from Valient Thorr does guest vocals too on the song Asleep In The Deep. Which kinda surprised me cause I heard he WAS on the album and then I heard he actually wasn't so I wasn't entirely sure which to believe.

Also. Fucking King Diamond is doing a North American for the first time in 11 years!

Amazing show last night in Montreal by Musk Ox, Jex Thoth and of course, the legendary Agalloch. All the bands were fantastic! Third time seeing both Agalloch and Musk Ox, and it's always a pleasure to talk with my favorite musicians, especially considering how they all seem to remember me somehow. I have to say, Don Anderson and Nathanaël Larochette are both very nice and devoted to their music and their fans, both off and on-stage.

Don Anderson still somehow remembers my first name. I'm very happy I had the chance to talk with him again. Such a nice guy! I also asked him if he could ever ask If These Trees Could Talk to tour with them, and he said he would really like to.

Also, if you guys don't know Musk Ox yet, you really need to check them out. Their newest album Woodfall is a chamber neofolk album, and it's amazing!

Musk Ox - Arcanum

I also recommend checking out Nathanaël Larochette's (Musk Ox founder) other project named The Night Watch, which is a mix of neofolk, classical, progressive rock, post-metal and many other genres.

Sure. My favorite band right now is Opeth, but I am also very into Mastodon, Baroness, Slayer, Animals as Leaders and The Sword.

Awesome. My gf and I listen to Mastodon, Opeth, Baroness, & Slayer. And I listen to The Sword. Actually saw them with Clutch and American Sharks last November and saw American Sharks with Big Business and Red Fang not too long ago.
Also saw Ghost in April. Show was awesome aside from the opening band. King Dude. And at the moment I'm hoping I can get a ticket to Alice Cooper & Motley Crue (pretty much JUST going for Alice Cooper). And MAYBE King Diamond later on in the year.

Wow, that's incredible. Yes, I forgot to mention Ghost. Ghost was really the band that got me into metal, along with Slayer. Boy, I wish I was a metalhead back in the days of the Heritage tour: Ghost, Mastodon and Opeth all in one night... Damn.

My gf actually went to see Opeth and Mastodon on the Heritage Hunter tour. She got there like halfway into Ghost's set and she was like super hooked on them after hearing just a bit of the song they were playing at the time. But she mainly went for Opeth and left a bit into Mastodon's set because she wasn't really "into" them at the time. Shes seen them on 2 or 3 different occasions and apparently they're not that good live. Shes seen Opeth about as many times and Gojira I wanna say 4 times.
I don't go to that many concerts. Last year I went to 3 and thats the most I've gone to in one year. It was Alice Cooper/Marilyn Manson, Black Sabbath, and The Sword/Clutch/American Sharks. This year I'm hopefully gonna go to more. And I hope Truckfighters are going to be playing around here again before the end of the year. And if they are it's most likely to support their new album.

fucking love Truckfighters....

As a big Mastodon fan, I'll be the first to admit that their live shows are rubbish. They have brilliant songwriting, but poor vocals and lacking guitar work (the drums are always spot on, though, thanks to Brann Dailor's crazy talent). Ghost is supposed to have a fantastic live show, what with their showy costumed style and all.

By the way, how was The Sword live? I looked up a live performance of Freya and was pleasantly surprised.
Freya (Live)
However, I've seen other performances, namely Veil of Isis which had strong playing, but lacking vocals.

Yeah thats what I heard (vocal and guitar wise).

It was a pretty awesome show.

It really depends. Some of the songs live were really good and others could have been better. But overall I really liked their live set.

How much of their stuff have you tried? They tend to sound a bit different on all of their albums. Kinda like Boris or Opeth but not as extreme as the former. I personally am a big fan of The Hunter and Leviathan. Though Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain are good too. Remission is okay but it's my least favorite. I can't really place Once More Round The Sun or Call of the Mastodon though. I also recently got Remission and Leviathan on CD so I now have all 7 of their albums.

the band considers Call of the Mastodon their "third album" making Blood Mountain their fourth.

I haven't heard the newest album, but the Hunter doesn't come close to being as great as Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye, IMO. I still think it's good, though.

I have Once More Round The Sun. It takes awhile to get into it. As in listening to it multiple times before you really like half of it.
It's not a bad album. But I prefer The Hunter over it. They sound too poppy and lost a lot of their edge with it. Granted there are some moderately heavy moments on it, but not enough for me to put it over anything like The Hunter.
You can pick it up or give it a listen if you want. But if you're looking for older screamier heavier Mastodon don't get it. If you're into stuff like that off of The Hunter go for it.
