Well thats a tad upsetting. I'll still check them out though.

I would say so since they did start Thrash Metal and then they just kinda lightened up. Also any recommendations? My Metal playlist is clogged up with too much Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, I need to broaden my Metal horizons.

Not really. Thrash goes all the way back to Queen and Black Sabbath.
Stone Cold Crazy for Queen (though not really "thrash" per se) and Symptom Of The Universe for Black Sabbath. The latter goes back almost an entire decade before Kill Em All was even released ._.
Also any recommendations? My Metal playlist is clogged up with too much Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, I need to broaden my Metal horizons.
Well that depends. What genres are you looking for?
Prog, Sludge, Stoner, Doom, Thrash, Folk, Death, etc?

When I get the time I'm gonna check out your Thrash, Stoner, and Sludge suggestions.

Yes, thrash metal.

Well... it depends on what you like. Black, thrash, doom, prog, death, stoner, folk, avant-garde, sludge, power. Not to mention that all of theses genres have their own sub-genres...
Anything to guide us?

Thrash, Stoner, Avant-Garde, Sludge, and Power. Anything from those will do just fine.

Solefald, Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende, Virus, Sigh, Peccatum, Fleurety, Ephel Duath, Gonin-Ish, UneXpect, Aarni, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, Solstafir, Smile Carved Sour, Vulture Industries, Azure Emote, Oranssi Pazuzu, Stolen Babies, Kekal, Apokatastasia, Transcending Bizarre?, Phlebotomized, Dodheimsgard, Karaboudjan and Lux Occulta (just the Mother and the Enemy cuz the rest is meh).
^ er, I meant for avant-garde. I meant to quote like this.

Thanks for the Avant-Garde suggestions, gonna listen to these all weekend long on Spotify.

Sense has mentionned a lot of avant-garde bands, and I will second him specificaly on Arcturus and Sigh, which are some of my favorite bands. Sigh is amazing! Try their albums Imaginary Sonicscape, Hangman's Hymn and maybe Hail Horror Hail. As for Arcturus, try The Sham Mirrors or La Masquerade Infernale. Both amazing albums.
As for thrash metal, I can't say I have a long list of recommandations. Morbid Saint and Kreator are always worth mentionning. But I also really like prog thrash such as Watchtower, and Symphony X has some thrash and power metal elements to their music. Good stuff. AniMetal would disagree with my genre classification for Meanstreak, I think he'd say they are more traditionnal metal than thrash, regardless, you should like Meanstreak!
Somewhere between thrash, stoner, sludge, doom, etc.... you have Leeches Of Lore. Amazing band! Along with Sigh, they are the band I've listenned to the most during the last year. Anything they've released is great.
As for sludge, Mastodon and Boris (on their albums Pink and Heavy Rocks) are both very good bands.
DUDES! Fucking Sleep are fucking working on a fucking new album!! link

Agreed on these. Also Crowbar, Bison B.C., Black Tusk, Kylsea, Eyehategod, Unpersons, and Weedeater.

Great recommendations, Mastodon, Boris, Watchtower, and Morbid Saint especially. Gonna have to listen to Metal a little more, I'm missing out on so much!

Yeah well, you're the sludge specialist here :P Your post also reminds me that I haven't found any Kylesa stuff to download or buy yet, which is a shame. Otherwise, Black Tusk are pretty cool. I saw them live and they delivered! They aren't really my style, I'll listen to them from time to time, but for someone who really enjoys that kind of music, they are very creative and they have a lot of personnality.

You've already checked them all out? That's fast :P I'm happy that you're enjoying these bands :)

I checked a few out from each and will go back and add some more to a playlist of mine on Spotify.

I'd say I'm more a Stoner specialist than anything else :P
Your post also reminds me that I haven't found any Kylesa stuff to download or buy yet, which is a shame.
The only Kylesa I'm usually able to find is Spiral Shadow. Other than that it's REALLY hard to find anything like that aroudn here. Hell I'm having a hard time finding a copy of Red Album by Baroness around here. I can find Blue Record and Yellow & Green, but not that album. I'm also thinking about buying copies of First and Second when I get more money. I'm currently saving money up for other stuff at the moment. Though I have been able to find Set The Dial, Taste The Sin, and Passage Through Purgatory.
Otherwise, Black Tusk are pretty cool. I saw them live and they delivered! They aren't really my style, I'll listen to them from time to time, but for someone who really enjoys that kind of music, they are very creative and they have a lot of personality.
I really wanna see them live. But I haven't had the opportunity to do so since I never know when they're going to be in my area. And when I DO know when they'll be around here I have no one who wants to go with me since no one I know around here listens to them. Though I DID find out Lord Dying and Hawkwind are going to be in my area in March. So hopefully I'll be able to find someone who will go with me to see at least Hawkwind.

Solefald, Ved Buens Ende, and Mr. Bungle are probably the most influential bands of avant-garde metal along with Arcturus and Sigh.
Sigh is amazing! Try their albums Imaginary Sonicscape, Hangman's Hymn
Yeah, those are probably their best.

Aspera Hiems Symfonia is also great.

I don't really like Mr. Bungle and I don't know Ved Buens Ende. Solefald is pretty good, though,
Yeah, those are probably their best.
I think Scorn Defeat gets forgotten a little too often.
Aspera Hiems Symfonia is also great.
Haven't heard it yet.
Bought a copy of Seventh Star while I was at Walmart last night.
I had a gift card from Christmas and wanted to use up the rest of the money on it.
So now I just need 7 more Sabbath albums then I'll have em all.
Just need: Mob Rules, The Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Tyr, Dehumanizer, Cross Purposes, and Forbidden.
I'm still debating on whether or not I want that last one to be honest.....
Just listened to Alcest's new album. Do you think they're still metal any more? Still good tho
Like Katatonia, they're not metal any more. They're also not good any more tho :(
At 1/8/14 02:29 PM, Earfetish wrote: Just listened to Alcest's new album. Do you think they're still metal any more? Still good tho
Just learned that they had a new album by reading your post. But I've checked out two of their tracks since then. And they aren't really metal in anyway. To me, they are more of a post-rock/shoegaze band now. Also, that Opale track... soft rockish stuff. It feels kind of weird. But the album seems to be well put together. I'll try to listen to the whole thing soon.
Alcest - Voix Sereines

I completely forgot they were releasing a new album soon.
And no. I don't think they're metal anymore. They haven't been "metal" for awhile. They're just Shoegaze and Post-Rock to me now.
But yeah. They're still good.
I've only heard Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde, which was decent.

Same here. I wanted to jump in but that's all I've heard as well which I liked quite a lot I must say. I would say mu favorite track off that album is "Souvenirs d'un autre monde" which is more shoegaze than metal but I quite enjoy it.

Écailles de Lune, Les Voyages de l'Âme, and Le Secret are all pretty good too.
I may cop some shit for posting this, but i thought I might as well ask what everybody's thoughts were on this band Aversions Crown. You could have heard of them mainly if you live in Australia.
Yes I am fully aware that they are deathcore, but for deathcore, I really didn't mind this particular song, this and Overseer
I am hoping I don't get crucified for posting this here.
Hollow Planet
I am lovin' me some Retro Haze .
I recently listened to both Ascending to Infinity and Dark Wings of Steel, and I was wondering which side of the Rhapsody split you guys prefer?
you wanna take hallucinogens and listen to Alcest and Deafheaven's new albums, sheesh, Deafheaven might be the most exciting metal I've heard for ages, this shoegazy ambient black metal stuff might be my new favourite genre cos I'm listening to loads of it recently.
Winterfylleth are good and from the UK, I know a former member of Winterfylleth (current member of Wodensthrone)

don't know the Aussie band the aforementioned poster mentioned

I feel like this is one of the events that cause people to think all metal fans are Satanists.
