The Black Dahlia Murder
Arsis
Ghost
Down
Fear Factory
Gwar
Immortal
Kamelot
Kvelertak
Mastodon
Opeth
Red Fang
Strapping Young Lad
3 Inches of Blood

Besides listing the obvious this seems good for a metal newbie.

When it comes to good Depressive Black Metal, there are a few bands you just don't want to miss out on.

You must get the album Il Ãfo/ootait une ForÃfªt... by the band Gris. It is absolutely amazing. Probably the best Depressive Black Metal album ever released, if you ask me.

The album To Lay Like Old Ashes by Austere is also a must. If you don't like the whole thing, check out the track Just for a Moment. I think it stands out as a masterpiece on it's own.

Languor into Echoes, Beyond by Chaos Moon is great. It's now your typical slow-paced and repetitive depressive black metal album. It's very "second-wave-ish black metal" but with good depressive bm elements. I like it :)

I know Xasthur gets a lot of negative critics, but Malefic's work is worth checking out no matter what flaws you can find in his music. I think you need to be in a specific mood for Xasthur, and even though the flaws are obvious in his music, it's still nice to go back to some of his records every now and then. To Violate the Oblivious has a thrashy production, which makes it probably the most "melodic" of his albums. It's pretty decent if you ask me. A few very good riffs here and there on that album, and some quite memorable moments. The album Subliminal Genocide is worth checking out for the two first tracks alone. Nothing to do with masterpieces like Ulver's Bergtatt, but still worth checking out.

Thanks man, I'll be sure to check out some of those recommendations. I know they'll be good, unlike searching youtube for the most mainstream depressive black metal there is. Those usually suck.

And I know I'm a little late to the party, but Destroyer 666 is AWESOME! I haven't listened to a single track yet from any of their albums that isn't great.

And if I were to add, Tsjuder coming back together was probably the best reformation ever, because they were able to come back and make the best album yet of their discography, Legion Helvete. Bought the album itself and a T-shirt of it. I just wish black metal bands performed live more than they do, they seem to like to avoid stages.

Same here. I'm not buying any digital shit... ever !

Unfortunately, my sister did buy Bongripper's Satan Worshipping Doom online but it's hard to get their stuff on CD. Like, a lot harder than Manilla Road prior to all their recent re-issues.

And it sucks that I can't seem to find it. I would like to hear it before the show. Yup, I'm most likely going to see them live on July 24th !!

Hey, that experience will be something.

Usually HMV, no matter how shitty this store has gotten, still have Agalloch albums... Get The Mantle as fast as you can. You won't regret this ! And if you can pick any other of their albums, do it :)

Not to worry, I grabbed The Mantle from Amazon. I was more thinking of possibly seeing Marrow of the Spirit, even if it'll be £15.

The band isn't cluttered up with demo/single releases so there's only the five albums to get (six if you count Unholy Cadaver). I like the look of their discography right now. Looks very tidy.
Well, if HOM had a demo like From Which Of This Oak, you'd be fuckin' happy they have released demos :P

Heh, Unholy Cadaver is counted as a demo but the reissue makes itself a full-length album. You know, I find it funny how we're talking about Hammers of Misfortune and Agalloch at the same time. If you're aware of Ludicra, you'll know that John Cobbett from Hammers actually collaborated with Agalloch members for the Ludicra project. That band has split up since last year, though but it was necessary due to HOM's increase of popularity.

And with a digital download regardless of legality just isn't the same. I can't quite trust how downloaded tracks are backed up for music. Maybe if they had that convenient account system that Steam has...
Same here... And Apple still retains a fucking property on the tracks as well... Fuck it !

I think Amazon do have a record of what you download but I'm not fully bought on Amazon MP3s. The most I use it for is to grab the odd strange track for my tastes.

I bought a few MP3 Albums on Amazon. While I can't complain about the quality it just doesn't "feel right". It's just as if I donwloaded those songs without paying anything. Somehow I feel, I just don't "own" those songs. Very strange.

Anyway, today I got Deathfist's "Too Hot To Burn" (it's their first full length album). It's a pretty good thrash metal album. While they don't reinvent the genre, it's a very solid (and THRASHY!) debut album. Also, Corinna Becker is a damn good singer. Forget about Sabina Classen, Corinna is the new queen of Thrash Metal!

Also, thank you for the recs everyone. I'll be sure to take everything into consideration.

Also, anyone here who hasn't listened to Tormentor should do so. They are very overlooked for some reason. Those fuckers should be right up there next to Bathory.

I've myself been looking for If These Trees Could Talk albums for years now. I can't believe these guys don't do anything to help their fans get their hands on their merch. Some bands even handle their merch by themselves, and that works pretty fine I suppose. I bought my Blotted Science album directly from Ron Jarzombeck via his website, and I know I've chatted with Fleshgod Apocalypse's bass player when I bought them a t-shirt.

Hey, that experience will be something.

I already saw them, but I really want to see them again.

It's well worth it, especially considering that any an all Agalloch albums are one hour long or longer (except for AATG... which is like 59 minutes an 20 seconds... but whatever). I remember buying Origin's album Echoes Of Decimation for 20 something canadian bucks. That fuckin' album is 26 minutes long !

This man and I were best friends. We went through so much BS together. I even introduced him to metal. He was like a little brother to me. His parents called me when he ran away when he was 16. I have never been closer to any other human being (minus anything physical obviously), even including my relationships. It feels like a part of me is dead now.

Jon Lord's contributions to Machine Head album I have appreciated more and it's as if there were hidden tunes in there. I'm pretty sure in a few years time I can easily say Deep Purple are one of my favourite bands of all time.

This is how I feel with Slough Feg's first album. Sure, they've re-issued it on vinyl but that's vinyl only. There's yet to be a CD variant of the recent re-issue. While I once again contradict my statements on downloading music, there are huge exceptions like Slough Feg's first album where it's simply too hard to even get on physical copy so you really have no choice but to download it. I can understand there may be some label issues (Black Sabbath's IRS albums are good examples) but in the end, that only gets their fans to take the downloading route. If you grab a rare copy of Headless Cross on eBay, who's really getting the money? Certainly not the band nor the label.

Turns out there were none at HMV. I should know high street shops damn well at this point. I suppose that 40 quid for HMV will have to wait until my next trip to London. In future, I should probably ask for Amazon vouchers since it'll be a lot easier to spend. There's tons more albums I can get on there that not even the biggest HMV store in London would provide.

Exactly...

But If These Trees Could Talk is a young band. They only have two releases and I can't get my hands on these... Slough Feg and Black Sabbath are a little older so maybe they just stopped making new copies. ITTCT couldn't possibly have stopped making new copies of their two albums...

Slough Feg still have their underground status so I can forgive them on that but Black Sabbath are THE metal band so surely they'd do everything to have all their albums available. That's why I like it when anyone can go to their local music store and pick up any Maiden album they want.

So....the Iron Maiden show may have been the most epic thing I have ever had the privelege to witness. If younhave the chance to go see Maiden and you haven't yet, definitely take it. It did not start out promising, because there was a severe thunderstorm going through the area, so my friend and I had to wait outside for about 45 min while it was pouring rain...not fun. But, we did get in, but due to that, Alice Cooper had to cut his setlist in half (Which included my favorite of his stuff, Halo of Flies). Here's his setlist:

Black Widow
Brutal Planet
I'm Eighteen
No More Mr. Nice Guy
Billion Dollar Babies
Feed My Frankenstein
Poison
Wicked Young Man
I Love the Dead (After Alice had his head chopped off)
School's Out (WIth parts of Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd)

Then there was Maiden...which was supremely awesome. They just had so much energy and the sets were incredible. I always enjoyed the song Fear of the Dark, but it is so much better hearing it live. Also, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a monster of a track live. Here's the setlist:

Doctor, Doctor
Moonchild
Can I Play With Madness
The Prisoner
2 Minutes to Midnight
Afraid to Shoot Strangers
The Trooper
The Number of the Beast
Phantom of the Opera
Run to the Hills
Wasted Years
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Clairvoyant
Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden

ENCORE:
Churchill's Speech/Aces High
The Evil That Men Do
Running Free
Always Look on the Brightside of Life

Really it was an incredible set...during the track Iron Maiden they had this absolutely huge recreation of the cover from SSoaSS and the heart in its hand was pulsing and stuff. It was incredibly epic. The real only thing I was disappointed in was that they didn't play Only the Good Die Young and Hallowed Be Thy Name. But it was such a great performance that those disappointments seem minor.

Why The Prophecy is a heavily overlooked Maiden song I'll never know. Despite that, I will want to see them for this setlist simply because of Phantom of the fucking Opera!!

Doesn't surprise me they'd leave out Hallowed Be Thy Name. For The Final Frontier world tour, they had left out Run to the Hills or The Trooper depending on where they were playing.

Nowadays I only use that kind of judgmental thinking when applied to myself, i.e. I figure he had a good reason for killing himself. Personally I feel the same (suicide is lame) and won't do it myself, but I don't judge others for doing it. Brandon was a grown man and could make decisions for himself.

I have a fun idea. Right now I have over 800 CDs in my collection and of course the majority of them are metal albums. However, despite having that many albums, there's surely some essentials out there that I'm missing out on. So I ask everyone here to take their time to use the text search on my CD collection and see what I don't have. Who knows, I may end up obtaining your said albums by the end of the week. ;)

Yeah, the setlist is a bit lacking but I'd love to hear War Inside My Head and The Test that Stumped Them All live.

Shrinebuilder - Shrinebuilder
Red Fang - Murder The Mountains or Red Fang
Samsara Blues Experiment - Long Distance Trip
Electric - Come My Fanatics, We Live, or Electric Wizard
