Nah, stores with metal sections usually suck at adding actual metal to the section. =] Disturbed is rock.

no, sorry. Korn isn't metal. Slipknot is BARELY metal. CD's in the metal section of Wal-Mart are usually anything but.

And, Manmetal, you're on the right track. I like your attitude. :) Oh, and check out Ulver, if you haven't. They might be metal on only three or four CD's (Bergtatt, Vargnatt (demo), Nattens Madrigal, Themes From William Blakes...) but they're still good. Their best is Bergtatt, Perdition City, Teaching in Silence, and A Quick Fix of Melancholy.

I'd like to join if you'll have me. I don't listen to exclusively metal, but I enjoy it (I listen to a mix, everything but "emo"/all things related to it, pop rock, and pure industrial like NIN and KMFDM). I'm open to anything, but I can usually tell right away whether or not I like it; that's what appeals to me about a lot of metal music, it can sound like pure noise at the beginning and suck you in with it's nuances.

Unfortunately, I've only recently started getting into metal (arrived through my other music tastes, things that mixed with/bordered on metal), so I only really listen to a few bands. I know of quite a few, but the ones I listen to as of now (generally bands related to the Roadrunner Label) are limited to Trivium, In Flames, Demon Hunter, The Agony Scene, Children of Bodom, Opeth, and a little bit of Killswitch Engage (really not my favorite band :/ ).

If you want other kinds of metal/metal-mix, too, throw in Static-X, Dream Theater, Symphony X, classic kinds of metal (Led Zep, AC/DC), and my most favoritest band evar, Machinae Supremacy (SiD-metal, basically metal with video game and industrial sounds, and the most impressive guitarist I have ever seen/heard... and yes, I have seen Michael Angelo Batio). I really like System of a Down, but I'm not quite sure what to call them; I generally just say "rock."

So, there you have it. If you can recommend anything, I really like Trivium's kind of harmony/discord mix thing (I'm a softie for dual guitars), and CoB's kind of borderline-progressive with the synth and guitar harmonies/battles.

Rawk on \o/

To the person directly above this post - post some of your fav metal bands, and we admitpeople based on those band choices. Also, it is posted a few times around the whole thread, and on the first page.

GChrist - I really like the song you put up, I listened to it a few times and it grew on me...I really like it.

ehhhhh........ I think he should get in. Remember... it's the knowledge of the genres and where the boundaries lie and the WILLINGNESS to listen to recommendations that counts. I think this guy is DEFINITELY in.

Harvey_Danger, have you heard of Cynic? They used to be on Roadrunner, and they're many tiers better than the shit they have on there now.

Is Deicide any good? Somebody recommended them to me, but I'd like to get some opinions first.

Yes, their earlier works is some great death metal. Check out http://www.metal-archives.com to get all info on metal bands. If it's not there, it's not metal.

Yes. Most definitely.

Oh, and Goat Pervertor rehearsed yesterday. I'd say our new stuff kinda sounds like 1349, but with a more disorienting sound. My drumming on my new kit has been likened by my bandmates as sounding like "military march blastbeats and double bass". XD I think I'm getting the Nick Barker syndrome on drums (endless fast double bass rolls), but at least I balance it out with some genuine 3:4/2:2 syncopation.

Lol, they've got Trivium in the archives. ;P

It's nice to see the database includes all kinds of metal, and not just indie and underground stuff.

I'd like to know, how do you guys define "metal?" It's something I find often comes up, and it'd be nice to have something definite to say. And also, nowadays it seems too many different bands are defined as metal, and it can get confusing (or annoying in the case of bands like Avenged Sevenfold... augh). Hell, I've heard people call Led Zeppelin the first metal band ever.

Well, I use the metal-archives basically as my definition of metal. And Led Zeppelin has had a HUGE influence on metal, so I suppose that's why some people label them as being the first, although Black Sabbath is actually the first.

In fact, the only thing it doesn't include are bands that are either so underground like 3 people have heard of them and bands that haven't released anything.

Doesn't matter for me, the earliest I listen to is Judas Priest. Most of the metal I listen to is black metal and ambient metal. But ya. Metal archives is THE definite metal source. If it's not there, it's either so underground that nobody has heard of it, or not metal. So let that be your guide.

HAHAHA we should have a motto "Don't ask us, ask the archives!"

Hi! back from the bane, it's been totally flooding in El Sobrante. 2 feet of water means no use of cars, so that's meant three things:

1.) I don't go to work
2.) I don't visit Natalie
3.) No cops around

So, I took advantage of the situation. First, since I didn't have to go to work, I spent the day guitaring and drumming. Well, mostly drumming, and I drummed about 7 or 8 hours today.

Second, I masturbated when I got tired of drumming. Chicks plus leather=fun.

Third, I got high and listened to a bunch of Mayhem and Tartaros and Nargaroth and Ulver.

But mostly I drummed. Now, since I still have more espresso, I'll likely cool off in a few hours and go to bed. But, I will probably drum more. My arms are already numb!
