Believe it or not, I'm having troubles mentioning my five favourite thrash metal albums. While I do like the genre, I just don't have enough definite favourites. All I can say for now is Rust in Peace, The Years of Decay and Outer Isolation. Looks like I need to fix myself with a lot of thrash metal.

Too late for Megadeth.

Wait, Nightfall, thrash metal? Blind Guardian's thrashiest album is easily Follow the Blind. I never imagined anything beyond Somewhere Far Beyond to be thrash metal in the slightest apart from the odd tracks.
The 'Deth is one of the best bands ever. deal, mang.

I can't believe there isn't a metal cover of Helan Gar (little o thing above the "a" excluded cuz NG sucks) or at least a song that includes it. If there were, I'd blast that shit while drinking with my friends.
i think i missed something...
why were people listing off thrash albums?
The fact you're all mentioning post-Taking Over Overkill is disappointing, I can only stomach their first two albums.

No, I was saying it ISN'T thrash metal. At all.

I heard their thrash elements in all their albums up to and including Imaginations From The Other Side. I think the original Battalions of Fear released under the name Lucifer's Heritage is definitely thrash metal, and that the re-recording of BoF released under the name Blind Guardian in addition to the FtB and TftTW both being thrash. SFB and Imaginations start straying away, but still have the elements.

My bad. I don't even know why I said that. I think I should have picked Sigh - Hangman's Hymn
Also, I don't remember who recommended me the band Mirrorthrone, but they are fantastic ! I never thought Atmospheric Death/Black Metal would ever exist, but it does :)

Just out of curiosity, why? I really enjoy some of their stuff after that. Their first two are arguably their best, but Years of Decay and Horrorscope are quality albums too. Just wondering why you don't like them.

I know that, I was just really surprised to even hear Nightfall being associated to thrash metal when it's one of the staples for power metal.

I could let you off if you were thinking more of Another Holy War.

I found the demos to have a traditional metal feel to them. The song Lucifer's Heritage is the best example.

I think it was you. Considering how SporkLord tries to jump me every once in a while, I think I'd be more open to recommandations by you. Thanks a lot. I'm really enjoying the album Carriers Of Dust :) I'll try to get my hands on more of their material !
Also, I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey with my girlfriend last night. Absolutely stunning! Great movie and it gives so much to reflect about. The soundtrack was also amazing. I recommand it to anyone who likes Drone, Classical music and Ambient. I also recommand anybody who doesn't like or "get" Drone music, to watch this movie. I think it's one of the best exemples of why this kind of "music" is so amazing.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the trippiest movies ever made. Before I saw it, I was always told it was one of the most confusing movies ever made. As I watched it, I was like, it makes sense so far, what is everyone else talking about. And then the last 20 or so minutes. ....What the hell just happened? I had no clue what happened in that ending. Made little to no sense in context with anything else.

I made a thread to discuss the ending on the general forums. And people have share some links so far to explain different parts of the movies. I have found some myself. The last part is kind of confusing, but if you don't take it all to litteraly, you can grasp at least a little of the meaning.

Great :)
I also liked it quite a lot. Now I'm trying to get my hands on the movie's soundtrack. It's kind of hard to find a good source to download it...
Mirrorthrone - Ils brandiront leurs idoles
I don't know why I don't like post-Taking Over Overkill, I just feel that everything about them after that album is painfully mediocre.
Every riff, solo, drum fill, etc. after Taking Over has been done MUCH BETTER by countless other thrash metal bands. The only thing that stands out about Overkill after Taking Over is the vocals, that's it.
That being said, even if I only like the first two Overkill albums, Overkill are fun as fuck live.
At 14 hours ago, Bahamut wrote: I know that, I was just really surprised to even hear Nightfall being associated to thrash metal when it's one of the staples for power metal.
Same, it surprises me as well.
I could let you off if you were thinking more of Another Holy War.
Another Holy War, definitely huge thrash influence.
But the title track, I'm Alive, Born in a Mourning Hall and And The Story Ends all definitely have a lot of thrash influence as well.
I think the original Battalions of Fear released under the name Lucifer's Heritage is definitely thrash metalI found the demos to have a traditional metal feel to them. The song Lucifer's Heritage is the best example.
I was under the impression it felt more like Saint Vitus-esque doom metal, but I never listened extensively to their demos.
But nah, the original BoF was DEFINITELY thrash metal. The second BoF was definitely as well, but not as thrashie or awesome IMO.
IN OTHER NEWS, two legends will be returning to the United States!
Rhapsody of Fire / Voyager!
I'm particularly pumped for this tour because Rhapsody haven't done a REAL America/Canada tour since 2005. And Voyager? They've only played one US show ever and that was Progpower last year.
Should be an amazing tour!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBGVCvcWy64 and Voyager!
This will be easily one of the funnest shows ever, anyone who can attend SHOULD attend. :D

Born in a Mourning Hall I can see. I probably would have said Script for My Requiem.

Strange, the Majesty demo I have does not have the carnival intro. Infact, this sounds too different to what I have which is the bonus tracks for Follow the Blind. Explanation for that: Changing the mixing around for the demo tracks. But yeah, I see what you mean with that song but I still think there were traditional metal elements to their earlier material.
Rhapsody of Fire / Voyager!
Now that's a line-up to see. If they do have an actual UK tour, I'll have to see them live. For some reason, they only show up at a festival and that's it. I'd rather see them at their own shows.

So, I'm dumping you on an island. You have an house, a radio system and you can pick 15 albums of your choice. The only albums you will ever hear again. What are they? (I picked 15 because 10 really was too hard for me...)

Kalmah - Swampsong
Blotted Science - The Machinations Of Dementia
edIT - Crying Over Pros For No Reason

1. Iron Maiden- Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
2. Death- Symbolic
3. Megadeth- Rust in Peace
4. Sigh- Scenes from Hell
5. Voivod- Nothingface

8. Symphony X- The Odyssey
9. Ayreon- The Human Equation
10. Morbid Saint- Spectrum of Death
11. Vektor- Outer Isolation
12. Strapping Young Lad- Alien

My God the new Killing Joke record is amazing (of course it is) and the bonus CD is mainly faithful covers with only slight deviations, but it is magnificent too.

I actually wasn't considering non-metal albums for my list but if we did have five non-metal, it would be Queen's Greatest Hits, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King and FFVI and IX soundtracks. Yeah, metal does dominate my music but at least this year I've been picking up loads of prog rock that I should have obtained long ago.
currently debating on whether or not to Pre-Order De Vermis Mysteriis on Relapse's website
i REALLY wanna do it
but i want the CD and its a Double LP
although i could buy the cd when its released and get this too...

This is a fantastic post-rock influenced sludge album with some stoner rock moments. You're missing out if you haven't heard it.
