woah. Hold the fuck on. You did not just say that Danzig is "not so fantastic". Tell me you didn't say that.
Van Halen and Danzig are some of my favorite old bands that i listen to frequently.

Did I say they sucked balls?
I don't believe I did. Sorry. I will state my mind differently. They are a good band, definitely. Are they one of the 100 greatests of all time. I do not believe so. But then again, maybe I haven't looked into them enough to really make my mind.
Sorry for hurting your feelings Sense ;)

I can't say I care much for Kollektivet, but this is so stupid that it's funny. I guess to fully appreciate it though, you need to understand Norwegian because that's a great dialect.

I very much agree with this. It is one of the first Black Metal albums I liked. Either way, if you're new to BM you may want to listen several times and really try to understand it.
Also, I'd like to recommend Taake as it's slightly more melodic than a lot of BM bands. And the production isn't bad either.

Seconded. Taake makes some of the best Black Metal :)
Sonata Arctica - Abandonned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited
Saying Danzig sucks makes you lose a lot of credibility to me, what's their to hate about his music? Sure, he himself is a douche, but his music's great and actually really consistent.
Also, Skid Row is awesome - everyone should listen to Skid Row. I wouldn't call them totally metal, but they're great regardless.
But eh, Duff, regardless of the fact that about 2/3's of that list is popular(Come on, you have no fucking clue who Joan Jett, Rollins band, Husker Du, Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, etc. are - don't lie) and the fact that there's maybe five or six awful bands on the list, it's still a great list.
Also, I feel it's worth mentioning that Kiss is Symphony X's single biggest influence and Michael Romeo has even said that if it wasn't for Kiss he never even would've picked up the guitar in the first place...

Which record is it? I've only heard their first two albums. The first was the better of the two, but they're both good.

You guys should check out Bow Wow. Japanese heavy metal from the 70s. Probably Japan's first heavy metal band. Pretty damn good stuff. Kyoji Yamamoto is a great guitarist.

Laughed at for liking one of the best prog bands of all time? I hope said old club drops into Robert Christgau's self righteous asshole and never comes back.
Also, do yo guys know of any pre-metal songs that are extremely heavy? This excludes Blue Cheer. Blue Cheer would be cheating.

Forgot to post my example, ELP - Barbarian
thumbs up for ELP. I have the self titled, Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery. I love them all.
At 1/18/12 02:17 AM, HeavenDuff wrote: Is that so? And what album would you consider their best?
hmm... I dunno. I could go with Danzig 1, 2, or 3. I dig Danzig because I like bluesy stuff a lot. I listen to a lot of blues tinted stoner rock and such.
At 1/18/12 04:38 AM, TheCrimsonWidow wrote: Love how you guy like King Crimson as much as I do, you guys beat those metalcore assholes by a lot! Since Devin was in another awesome band, I'm checking to see what else Fripps was in (Fuck clapton, Fripps is god!)
Fripp did some decent solo work and also collaborated with Brian Eno to make some nice stuff.
Bill Bruford, the best drummer they ever had and one of the best drummers ever IMO, was also in Yes and had some good solo albums. He also has a jazz band called Earthworks that is very good. My favorite song is Terratoma. And he was a guest musician on one of the songs by Gordian Knot, which is a great band that has had many guest musicians such as John Myung, Trey Gunn, Steve Hackett, and Ron Jarzombek, who is a phenomenal guitarist, in case you haven't heard of him. I think his brother, Bobby Jarzombek, who is an incredible drummer, was also on a song of theirs.
Tony Levin has a solo project with some good stuff. I like his cover of the Sabre Dance.
Of course, you probably know than Greg Lake was in Emerson, Lake & Palmer, which had another one of the greatest drummers ever, Carl Palmer (I'll take Bruford over him, though, because his rythym and the beats are just better).
Also, I agree that Fripp is more interesting and original and just plain writes better stuff than Clapton, but I still like him.

The only ones there I haven't heard of are Husker and Du. Everybody knows Joan Jett, and Rollins Band is quite well known.
What do you guys think of WallofYawn's posts regarding metal subgenres? According to his point of view, doom metal, progressive metal, power metal, black metal, death metal and others aren't real subgenres. Here's just a few excerpts. I hope he doesn't mind me doing this.
"Thrash Metal should include death metal and black metal, because they are just heavier versions. Those sub-genres should not even exist, because they're pointless and stupid really. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like bands like At the Gates, The Haunted, Death, Atheist, Pesticide, Nile, and Alchemist, but really, they're still thrash metal, just at times heavier and more "wall of sound" ish, with more "blast beats."(a technical term for frantically banging on the drums like a chimpanzee)"
"Power Metal and Classical Metal are not much different than a lot of the 80s rock groups played on radio and the like, only they sing about gay shit, like wizards and dragons. They should call it nerd metal."
"Progressive metal? Shit, this is just another way of saying, 'pretentious math lovers who are obsessed with odd time signatures.' "
I definitely disagree, but what do y'all think?

You know, I should probably check which biggest rock artist out there I haven't even sat down and listened to.
I should keep that in mind but if there's any years I need to expand, it's mostly the 60s. Still surprised how little I have from that decade.Good little exercise we did there :) It helps get a better overview of your own library. When you got a lot of music, it's nice to be able to look at it from a different point of view.
Oh yeah, I'm glad I did have a look back at my overall library. Better decide which 60s artists I should explore.
Same here. But I don't do much of an effort to keep track of the upcoming releases. I did ask you guys for informations on where to find out about these new releases, a few weeks ago. Still didn't get much feedback.
You can check on the upcoming releases list on Metal-Archives and Metalstorm. You'll generally find a lot of stuff from there. Better ways to hear about bands you know that are releasing stuff or going on a world tour are for their representing Twitter and Facebook accounts.

If Quiet Riot and Angra sound anything alike to someone, that someone needs to fall off a cliff.
80's glam and 90's/00's power metal have NOTHING in common, other than guitar solos and maybe falsetto vocals.

So...I discovered it really sucks to live in Indiana when it comes to (metal) concerts. All the bands I want to see seem to skip us, or if they do they play at a 21 or older club. I've missed out on a lot of great concerts that way. Hell, Mastodon was here with Red Fang for pretty good prices, but only at the 21+ place. GAH! Is quite infuriating.

sometimes i hate the fact im 18...

I actually can't believe the legal age of drinking is 21 in many states in the USA. And I actually can't believe they won't make an exception for concerts.
I mean, we have these brewers in Quebec, they hold bars named "Les Trois Brasseurs", they make some of the greatest beer I have ever drank. Funny thing is, that they are not legaly a bar, but a restaurant. So I'm there drinking beer with my girlfriend and a buddy, and I see a little girl going down the stairs. I like "Wait what?!"
And they can't make exceptions for concerts in bars? I remember when we had this concert hall named Le Medley in Montreal near my Uni. They would ask for IDs at the entrance and give a specific color bracelet at the entrance to mark those who were 18 and older and those who were younger then 18. I thought that was a great idea. Especially considering the fact that the Metal community is still kind of young. I know the fanbase's average age varies between bands, but you know what I mean.
