I would like us to individually do a list and a little review of the metal albums released in 2011 and that we own.
The Metal albums of 2011 that I own:
Benighted - Asylum Cave
Blood Red Throne - Brutalatarian Regime
Blotted Science - The Animation Of Entomology
Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events
Falloch - Where Distant Spirits Remain
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Mastodon - The Hunter
Origin - Entity
Scale The Summit - The Collective
Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
Symphony X - Iconoclast
I must say that this was a pretty good year for metal :) I was not really dissapointed with most of these releases. Agony by Fleshgod Apocalypse was a big dissapointment. I made a review for that record on Metal Archives if you want to know my in-depths point of view on this one. Otherwise... I can't say I'm really dissapointed by any other album. I didn't expect much from Dream Theater, and the album is at least decent and some tracks are good. Symphony X's new album is ok, I guess. But I wasn't hoping for another The Odyssey or another V: The New Mythology Suite. I know they won't go back to writting masterpieces like these, but they still release very enjoyable material. Iconoclast wasn't as good as Paradise Lost, imo... but still a decent album.
Scar Symmetry's album is kind of good, especially compared to what the band released since Christian Alvestam's departure. It's not that great, but still enjoyable. A cool little melodeath release for 2011.
Other than that, I think all the other albums were great or fantastic. Asylum Cave by Benighted is a great Death Metal album. Definitely a great add to their discography. I really like how Benighted keeps evolving through their career. They never release a generic album and they never release an album that tries to feed on a previous album's success. When they release something good, they still find a way to write a completely different album next. Asylum Cave is great... in part because of this.
Brutalitarian Regime is to me... the best release of the year. It is exactly what I was hoping for when I heard that BRT were releasing a new album. It kicks ass from the first second to the last. Definitely an album I will recommand to all fans of death metal.
Blotted Science and Cynic have both released albums this year two. Long awaited albums, especially for Blotted Science. Both are EPs though, and not full-lenght albums. Still worth it for both bands. Blotted Science released some heavier, more death metal driven prog metal than what they previously released and still manages to keep it fresh. Cynic is still evolving. They sound nothing like they did on Focus, and little like what they did on Traced In Air, but this album is still good. Too many fillers on there though... but the main tracks are sexy.
Origin's new album is great. It's definitely good and will most likely get better critics then their previous efforts. This album is more melodic and less saturated. There are times where you can breath on this album... so you get some crescendos on this album and not just a brutal monotone wall of noise. Definitely worth it. For fans of the band and even for those who didn't like them before.
Scale The Summit and Falloch were good finds for me. One is an instrumental progressive metal/rock band and the other is somewhat similar to Agalloch, but still manages to be different enough and avoid being a shitty copy-cat. The Agalloch influences are there, but it's unique enough for me to be able to enjoy their music. Scale The Summit is a great band. It's not just another "technical instrumental prog band". There is emotion in these riffs and the song-writting is out-standing. Their song-writter is one of the two guitarists and he his very talented. I wish the best for this band. They will go far :)
Mastodon's album was also pretty interessting. Less progressive then their previous effort, but it still retains enough of that "Mastodon personnality" to be enjoyable... at least to me. I know some really didn't like it. But I'm happy with the result. This is another band that manages to keep it fresh and not feed on a previous release's success. The Hunter... pretty good album :)
I hope you guys will also do a little list... If you don't want to review all your stuff it's fine. But it would be cool if you could at least rank your albums or say which ones you liked, which ones you didn't like... That would be cool.
And then, maybe make a list like Zodir did... of releases you are looking forward in 2012 :)
