I do enjoy me some drone, even if I'm a metal newbie (i usually listen to alternative rock/progressive rock/hip hop), i'm exploring different sounds. i find drone great in setting this deep tone and atmosphere, great to just sink into and use as a background to drawing.

It's funny you say you're a metal newbie, because you don't listen to the most accessible bands :P. People usually start with the old bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest... or they start with the most melodic and commercial stuff like Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Children Of Bodom and the like. You're the fist person I ever met who says he's a metal newbie after listing Sunn O))), Ulver and Ulcerate as some of their favorite bands... :P

Response to Metal Hell 2011-12-23 19:09:08

Nice list there, ScaryPicnic. Which works of Ulver do you like? just their metal? Or do you like their later stuff as well?

You might dig the Sham Mirrors or la Masquerade Infernale by Arcturus. And if you like black metal at all, you may like Aspera Hiems Symfonia, also by Arcturus.

Forgive me if this band wouldn't be considered proper metal (I'd compare them to Trap Them and Kvelertak) but I have not seen a single top 2011 metal album list containing the fantastic debut album from Enslave. They're japanese 'crust' with dual male/female vocals, and their album is definitely one of the best I've heard this year.

If they're not considered metal then disregard this post, but if you're into bands similar to Kvelertak then definitely check them out.

We often discuss Post-Rock, Crust Punk, Stoner Rock... and other genres that are not "exactly" metal. You know that. Just as long as we discuss Metal "most of the time" it doesn't matter if you talk about another genre of music. It's totally fine...

Duff, I met someone once who got into metal through Sunn O))).

They got into Sunn O))) because they liked Sigur Ros. haha

True. If you are into Ambient, Post-Rock and other genres that rely on atmoshpere, Sunn O))) might be a good way to get into Metal.

Enslave... sounds familiar. :P Actually reminds me that I saw a signed copy of Enslaved's newest album on vinyl in a local store a little while ago. I'd been meaning to buy that album, but I didn't have the money at the time. It's probably gone now.

They sound good. I find it odd that they are not in the archives yet like you said kvelertak is on it I sure fucking love kvelertak!) But yeah it's a cool band.

Haha, your list seems to suggest otherwise. I actually like how you've been introduced to metal since it isn't all about getting into Metallica, Maiden and Megadeth after all. Can't say I'm a fan of Sunn 0))) but it's always good to see the versatility of metal.

I really should stop making a habit of having almost every post I make here a band recommendation, but...

Once again, it has occurred to me that Beyond Creation's amazing 2011 technical death metal debut seems to be missing from every top metal album of the year list. Unlike the other band I posted, there aren't any genre complications that would exclude them from such a list, and I think it's because this band/album hasn't really had much media coverage at all. Okay I'll stop with the band plugs now.

Hey everyone, I've been kind of getting into metal lately and I've been stalking this thread for some good reccomendations. I have a list of some metal bands I listen to, but most of them, if not all of them are mainstream, and I was kinda hoping I could find some underground bands that fit my style.

System of a Down
RATM
Evans Blue
Megadeath
Anthrax
A7X
Strapping Young Lad
Testament
Lamb of God
Smashing Pumpkins

Metal Xmas people. I've had a decent showing so far, so just thought I'd post to say I've had Garage Inc by Metallica and on a more rock bent, I've also had Roll the Bones, by Rush. Still, Neil Peart is a more gifted drummer than Lars :P

Wich isn't exactly an achievement. :P

But seriously, Lars is the right drummer for Metallica. It's not about how "awesome" someone is at something, it's what you make of the talent that you have. And in that aspect Lars has done everything right. ;)

Lars had his good moments, but everything went downhill from Justice IMO.
