I'm starting to absolutely fall in love with 1349. Hellfire is such an amazing album, and Sculptor of Flesh and Nathicana are such unbelievable tracks.

With the amount batman64 is listening to The Hunter, I might have to start listening to Mastodon.

And I will go on a limb here.
Heritage I like a lot as well for reasons I have yet to talk about.
Been working on a review since I first heard it, talking bout the songs, content, the cover, Dio, and the length of the album and how it all fits to tell a story you all may not have realized.
There is a lot more to Heritage than meets the ears and eyes as well..sometimes you got to dig a lil deeper into what is there.
Hell, I will write my review and thoughts about Heritage within a day or so and let you all decide.
Hmm. I can't really dig Heritage. I've been listening to it a lot, just hoping something would click, and I would understand the praise. But it hasn't happened yet. While I'm not the biggest fan of Opeth, I have enjoyed their music. This album just never really came together for me. I give it a 2.5/5. Just my opinion, and I respect yours as well. I do need to pick up The Hunter though, cuz I have thoroughly enjoyed all their albums, but I doubt it will topple Blood Mountain as my favorite Mastodon album.

I'm odd tomorrow, so I'll give it a full listen then. Thanks for the reply, bro.
Does anybody know some good non-European folk metal? Been listening to a lot of gamelan and Siberian folk music lately, so I might as well request for Asian folk metal specifically. An example of what I'm not looking for stuff like Deep Mountain. Though I love them, very little of their stuff sounds remotely Asian.

Not trying to +1 post, but I meant "off".
YAY!!!! Ok so yeah Mastodons new album is pretty tits. The fact that it just seems all the songs are all over the place made it awesome. Never knew what they were gonna do in the next song. The first 2 songs of course have had their play time with me since they were released on youtube and are very great songs that get stuck in my head (It's just the curl of the burl.)
Blasteroids is a bad ass song that actually has screaming in it which was surprising to me to hear this. Stragasm..... whats not to love in this song. Just has a nice pace and some cool noises going on in the background defiantly a good song to smoke to.... (but I don't anymore... sadly.) Octopus has no friends.... now there is a song title I never would have thought I would see before (maybe some gay ass indie rock shit.)but another nice song.
All The Heavy Lifting is defiantly a song that's up there on one of the great songs on this album (my opinion) so I would totally listen to it. Now for the CD's title track The Hunter. This song is a slow paced song that defiantly makes you feel relaxed and kinda set me in a good groovy mood. Yeah grab a bowl fo sho for this track. Dry bone valley brings the CD back to mid pace speed I would say. Still a good track to listen to.
Thickening starts off slow then picks up about 1:30 into it. It goes to something I never heard before ( I assume) on a mastodon album for maybe 20 secs. Then goes mastodon again then goes back to the weird part and does it back and forth. Its not a bad thing just seems different I just hope I'm not the only one to pick it up.
Creature Lives starts off with noises and laughter. This song seems to be really different from any Mastodon song I've heard (I only own Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye, and the demo Call Of The Mastodon, and only listened to a few tracks off of Leviathan.) Its a slow paced song and its a nice tune not the best but yeah you can enjoy it. Spectrelight brings it back and you gotta bang your head to it. Defiantly a great song. Has a fast pace to it and a great sound.
Bedazzled Fingernails (FINGERNAILS ARE METAL NOW!!!..... as long as they are bedazzling....yeah.) Another good track. The sparrow starts off slow paced, groovy, and relaxing. (smoke smoke smoke) then kinda picks it up about 2 mins into it still slow but not as slow but does go back to how it started for the last part of the track. Gotta love it.
To be honest this would be my first review of a CD. Not sure if it's great but hell felt like Mastodon deserved it to be reviewed and yeah all I can say is it's defiantly a great CD to purchase. I can't really see how anyone could turn this down at all. Couple of songs aren't as interesting as others but they should at least get the attention they deserve.
9.5/10

Anybody listen to Wormrot's latest EP? Gave a track a listen yesterday, seems they've brought in some sludgier elements to the table. P. cool shit. Seeing as you all really love it so much, I guess I gotta give Mastodon a second listen. Remission will always be my favorite by them. Either that or Crack the Skye. Hell, maybe even Call of the Mastodon. Ah fuck it, all Mastodon is good, I can let this become swept under the rug. See you guys in an hour.
Also, check this band out, Annihilation Time. They aren't really innovative or novel, but they're some pretty cool neo-speed metal perfect for just rocking out to. Think Black Flag meets Motorhead.

Never heard of Wormrot before but I just listened to the new EP by them off youtube sounded cool. Reminds me of Anal Cunt.
That track by Annihilation Time was pretty nice as well.

So I've got the Hunter, only listened to the first 5 tracks, and so far I'm like
"Wut"
I've already heard things I don't like on it but maybe it will grow on me. They have a unique sound.
Just listened from 5 to the end, thought it was boss. Cool riffs and drums but totally weird too.
Sorry I been absent I'm too busy fighting the New World Order. :p
Been listening to a lot of Xasthur lately. The Funeral of Being
Finally decided that downloading all the music I want is no way to enjoy music. Got rid of all that shit, and bought my first metal CD. I'm having a bit of a tough time finding any good metal CD's, but today I bought Rust In Peace at a small CD store. Feels good, man.
I've been previewing some of the new Mastodon tracks and I'm not much of a fan. To be fair, I've never listened to Mastodon before and from what I've been reading, this album feels a bit different than their other stuff. I'll give it a few more tries before I disregard it though, because there's definitely some elements I like.

Almost back from my holiday and it brings a huge smile to my face to see you guys talking about Mastodon's new album and why you all love it. It's one album I've given a few spins on my iPod while I've been away and I'm really enjoying it. This is coming from someone who thought something was missing in Crack the Skye.

Well, that might just be a sign that I should give it a try. Cause I also thought there was something missing on Crack the Skye, while generaly liking the riffing, atmosphere and energy of the band.
TO BOTH PENISCLOWN AND TOASTEDCUPCAKE:
Based off the three or four new Mastodon songs i've heard on youtube, it's probably their weakest album thus far.
That being said, I really shouldn't judge until I hear the whole thing.
But still, check out their other albums too.

1349 is so overrated by hipsters, blog sites and black metal elitists.
Everything i've ever heard by them is so fucking boring.

I always thought Atlas Moth was supposed to be funeral doom? I've never listened to them, but i've heard of them plenty and I was assumed they were for some reason.

Throughout the whole interview there was a recurring theme of "this isn't what I'm meant to do," which seems like a cop-out excuse since he doesn't have a real reason.
I don't get why Black Pyramid has to disband because one guy is a pussy, there ARE two other members...
Either way, I'm still happy Black Pyramid II is being released.
Same. haha
Gave Mastodon's latest a second listen, overall the same. The atmosphere on this album, though inferior to Crack the Skye imo, is pretty great. But the Heavier parts leave much desire. Hearing Scott Kelly regardless of who he's doing it is always a plus. Fav track is Creature Lives, has a hym feel to it.
Anybody know some good new Stoner/Psychedelic bands? Preferably ones more akin to actual 70's Psychedelic ?

I think Nev has "quit," I haven't seen him in forever. Actually, I haven't seen any of them in a really really long time (except Bahamut). Odd.

So as MANY of you know, I am largely into the power, "symphonic" and "speed" metal fields and have been into those styles of metal since 2001, unlike everything else which I didn't start getting into until 2007 or later.
I have recently found an absolutely INCREDIBLE newschool power prog metal band.
They're called Voyager and they troop out from Australia.
They have three albums:
Element V (2004)
uniVers (2007)
I am the reVolution (2009)
I haven't heard their second album yet, but their first and third albums are two of the greatest albums i've recently heard well... ever.
Voyager take the awesome precision and technicality that bands like Animals As Leaders use, combine it with the space-age era vibe that you get from like Avian, Pagan's Mind and earlier Ayreon.
Of course, it doesn't indulge AS much into progressive music as the above mentioned bands, but they pull off the vibe just perfectly meanwhile staying perfectly melodic, in the sense of the more well known power metal bands, and is actually quite headbangable unlike 90% of power metal.
Also, I joined this thread back in 2007, even if I only posted once a week or so. Do I count as an old member yet? :P

Nev did announce that he was leaving a short while ago.
Sam is still alive as far as I know
Prior to that though I don't really know
So yesterday for school, we had to dress up based on music for homecoming week. The Senior theme was rock. So I went as King Diamond. Twas pretty fucking awesome with all the face paint. Unfortunately, a lot of people thought I was KISS. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Been going back into my hold albums recently. I re-discovered a great band named Quo Vadis, the Quo Vadis from Quebec, not the one from Poland. You might enjoy this. They play a unique brand of progressive and technical melodic death metal, but not an Arch Enemy kind of melodeath. They are unique. I really don't know what album to suggest, they are all good and differents. My favorite when I was a teenager was Day Into Night, but I'm getting more and more into Defiant Imagination now. The last one has a sick cover, I'll post a picture at the end of my post.
Just like Duff with his damn good taste in Black Metal and it's assorted variances YOU have damn good taste in Prog bro...never said that before but felt it was about time.
I'm the Black Metal pro now? Haha! In all honesty, this is one of the genres it took me the most time to get into. Such a unique (Yeah, I use that word a lot) genre with it's very own aesthetic and characteristics, plus a vast tree of different sub-genres. But thanks dude! It's cool to see I'm making a lasting impression here. But just for the record, Bruce and smeagol both have a good knowledge of the genre.
And for some Stoner/Psychedelic i would say trying Necromandus, Alan Davey(Bass Assassin II, Lemmy's protege , kinda a smaller version of Lemmy, sounds like a mix of Motorhead and Lemmy with Hawkwind, cool bassist and a real cool dude I had the pleasure of meeting and partying with, check out his site on Myspace, has 7 tracks you just may like.) Have more to come later, just got back with partying with a drummer neighbor and kinda buzzed now. Hell, you want a 70's feel listen to some lesser known 70's bands.
I'm really was hoping someone would answer that post, cause it's of some kind of interest to me two. I'll make sure to listen to these bands you listed. I'm not that big on "old bands", if I can express myself this way. But hey! You made the effort to listen to some of my stuff, I'd be dumb to ignore what you have to share!

Probably because Andy was the entire feel of the band. He was the guitarist and vocalist, and honestly, the vocals were what made them stand out the most for me.

This is something that really bugs me. Like, when I read about a band that released only one album or two, and a lot of demos... now they are finaly known, after all the hard work to get a fanbase and reach people with your music... GETTING HEARD! You decide that you don't want to do this anymore... Well... that really bugs me...
I totally forgot to post the picture of the cover of Defiant Imagination
