This is one thing that gets me when it comes to review. As I only want to focus on reviewing and talking about the music, it's hard for me to determine how simplistic or complex one song is but I'd say you will get those tracks that sound blatantly simple and blatantly complex. Due to lack of creativity in my mind, I have no desire to pick up an instrument.

Technically only one opinion was given about Dragonforce. I commented on their guitarist. And it was true too. Li can't play anything he writes. He uses the magic of studio editing to make it sound good.
That being said, I don't care if anyone likes them, it just irks me when people say he's a good guitarist.

That information is a few years out of date at least. He recently has been able to play his stuff live.

enhancement pedals are portable last time I checked. The most complex thing I've seen him do is a three string sweep, every thing else is just tremolooooo.
I know In Flames may not be a band most of us are fond of here but this week's Metal Monday post covers a song from their debut album.

To be fair, there'll be the odd subgenre that some of us don't like. I know some of you aren't fond of power metal and I can't really dig drone metal. Sorry, guys.
Kinda like when Duff and I talked about Black Metal.
And I will say that AniMetal comes up with some particularly interesting opinions. Some might be outrageous but I get curious as to why one would think of something unusual.
Is anyone else in love with the vocals of John Tardy from Obituary? I swear to God he is just a ....Godly being.... when it comes to vocals.

One word: Bullshit.
I'm NOT a fan of Dragonforce, but I HAVE seen them live and they play everything they write, and flawlessly I might add.
Anyone who says "LOL DRAGONFORCE CAN'T PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENTS" and/or "LOL DRAGONFORCE SUCK SO MUCH LIVE" is just cocksucking the trendy mass opinion and hasn't seen actually seen Dragonforce live.
Again, i'm not even a Dragonforce fan and they played great live and had no real problems.

Sea Of Lies is the only song on The Divine Wings Of Tragedy that I DON'T like.
Why it's one of their most popular songs is beyond me.

Guitar effects and over all tremolo. Also, I forgot to mention of course, keyboards. What ever they can't play on guitar, they do on keyboards. Not to mention that in some of their concerts they've actually left out the solo because " they're too lazy to play it ". Bullshit. If I'm paying money I want to see you play your god damn song, to me that translates to " I can't actually do it "

I didn't say it was the most popular I just love the guitar work. I would also link to his album the dark chapter or any other song like The Damnation Game, of sins and shadow etc.

So... "Wah, they're playing their music exactly how it's supposed to be played" is what you're saying.

You're a dumbass. Most bands that have a guitar solo in EVERY one of their songs leave out at least two or three solos live to cut back on time and to make it so the solos wouldn't get boring. Most power and thrash metal bands do that, anyway.
Also, when I saw them it was a guitar solo basically every two or three minutes so I have no idea what you're talking about.
I didn't say it was the most popular
I know, but it's one of their most popular songs. It's one of their most searched on youtube and I heard it getting shouted at the stage constantly at every SX gig i've attended.
I would also link to his album the dark chapter or any other song like The Damnation Game, of sins and shadow etc.
Pretty much every song on Divine Wings, V and Twilight In Olympus is amazing and worth linking.

Keyboards need to stay for keyed instruments. I don't care if you have a pipe organ sound or a harpsichord but its horribly lame if you need to use keyboards for guitar if you already have TWO other guitarists in the band.

So why would they leave out certain solos? You tell me they do it to cut back on time and now you say that they had solos every two or three minutes.
I'm sure riffs sound like solos when you're running them through delay, reverb, harmonizers, and god knows what kind of wah pedal. But that's what happens when you spend more time on your rig than you do on guitar.

Playing something NOT exactly how it sounds on album? Improvisation? WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT YOU SPEAK OF? ;D
Not that I've ever seen.
Pay more attention at shows then.

I was saying generally speaking bands leave out solos to cut back on time, never did I say Dragonforce were doing that.

Eh, if you like new then their shows are awesome.
You can't expect more then three or so non-Paradise Lost or Iconoclasm songs.
Which sucks, because I would LOVE to see a setlist of just their third, fourth and fifth album: completely ignoring their first two albums and their 6th album onwards.
But I doubt that will ever happen...

That's not quite it. I'm all for improvisation, but as I said, playing it on keyboard when you can't do it on guitar isn't improvisation. Or at least not in the way I'm thinking of.

Me thinks its more the bands that are playing more than anything.

I wouldn't mind some Iconoclast or Paradise lost, but I would really like to see at least ONE DWoT song, The witching hour.
Now I bought a Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Suffocation and Slayer shirt.
I'm ashamed of myself for buying shirts instead of albums.
At 8/22/11 09:55 PM, mothballs wrote: I'm ashamed of myself for buying shirts instead of albums.
Don't be.
If anything, you made the better choice.
Why do I say that?
1.) You can download the albums for free, or at least until you have the money to buy them. You can't download a shirt.
2.) Those bands will gain zero publicity by buying their CDs, but if you go out in public a lot then they will potentially gain a little publicity from your shirts.
3.) If you bought directly from the band's sites or at shows, more money to the band.

It's still improvisation. Now whether it's good or bad improvisation, is opinion.

I've attended three Symphony X shows so far (2007, 2008, 2011) and the only songs from before Paradise Lost I have seen are:
Of Sins And Shadows (3)
Sea Of Lies (1)
Smoke And Mirrors (1)
Church Of The Machine (1)
Through The Looking Glass (1)
Evolution - The Grand Design (1)
Inferno (2)
King Of Terrors (2)
The Odyssey (1)
And those were spread out among three shows. So yeah, not much old stuff. :/

Yet out of the three bands that were supporting Iron Maiden in the UK this year, DragonForce was the one I wanted to see the most, even if it meant for them to fail on stage. I'll take their music over Trivum and Airbourne any day of the week.

I can understand disliking Trivium. But aren't Airbourne supposed to be good? I wouldn't know, I haven't listened to them, but i've heard good things about them. O.o

Yeah... they played like four PL songs at the 2007 show, they played PL in entirety minus two songs(walls of babylon, the sacrifice) in 2008 and they played five songs this year.
I'm getting pretty sick of Paradise Lost for that reason. hahahaha

The Devin Townsend Project is playing four shows in London in november where they play four different albums in entirety. One each night. And it's also all going to be flimed for an 8-disk live boxset.
November 10th - London, Union Chapel - KI SHOW
November 11th - London, ULU - ADDICTED SHOW
November 12th - London, ULU - DECONSTRUCTION SHOW
November 13th - London, Union Chapel - GHOST SHOW
Someone here has to go to all of these for me.
