Cool story bro.

Besides, wikipedia also list viking metal as a genre.

So obviously they can be trusted for genrizing.

I'll check up on the debates tomorrow. Right now, I just want to say the Judas Priest show was beyond amazing. Rob Halford's screams were the loudest I've heard in a concert so far and it's topped off with a brilliant setlist. Fantastic display set and great support act (Queensrÿche were actually GOOD) gives me very little to complain about! Setlist is as follows (album order, not setlist order):

Never Satisfied
Victim of Changes
Diamonds and Rust (as a ballad)
Starbreaker
Beyond the Realms of Death
Hell Bent for Leather
Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)
Rapid Fire
Metal Gods
Breaking the Law
Heading out to the Highway
The Hellion/Electric Eye
You've Got Another Thing Comin'
The Sentinel
Turbo Lover
Blood Red Skies
Painkiller
Night Crawler
Battle Hymns (intro)
Judas Rising
Prophecy

Which is why when I posted I wrote it as 'Djent'.

Also, I see that nothing has changed here since I've been gone. Awesome.

So, all the unnecessary bullshit arguing and elitism aside, Periphery and TesseracT are coming to Sydney soon enough and I'm going to see them :D going to be amazingly awesome.

I met Bulb (Periphery's guitarist) working at a Best Buy in Annapolis before he formed Periphery, be jelly.

Also, does anyone know of any good grindcore/powerviolence bands? I've been having a knack for the two lately, especially the latter.

Totenmond - Die Membranen

I guess Misery index is grindcore? I think their latest album is one of the best releases of 2010.

I like Meshuggah. Periphery aren't Meshuggah, but they hold the same sort of thing, know what I mean? Like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, etc.

Has anyone here heard of Nocternity or Gnaw Their Tongues?

I checked them out on recommendations from my sources and I think they're pretty cool.

Both are BM bands but they're approaches are quite different with Nocternity being more atmospheric group while Gnaw Their Tongues combine the Black metal with Noise elements

Gnaw Their Tongues - Destroying is Creation

Gnaw Their Tongues tracks are basically a cacophony. It's shrill, oppressive, and eerie. The spoken word samples that are featured in just about every track really add to the oppressive and discomforting mood that the entire album has and I think it works but I figure the actual screaming in this album, and this track in particular, doesn't really seem to work as well as it should. I dunno I still think it's a unique experience as a whole.

Nocternity - Onyx

Honestly I haven't listened to this album enough to have much of an opinion on it yet but it's like I said before, atmospheric. I guess it's kind of like a less precise or engaging version of bands like Agalloch but still pretty good.

Not so much skating anymore, moved onto longboarding, a lot more relaxed and laid back and such, but still has that element of HGURHIGBSIHBHIR THAT WAS FUCKING COOL to it.

Had surgery on my left wrist last year as well, which was pretty crap, which pretty much told me NO MORE SKATING FOR YOU. I told it to get fucked though and started longboarding. Still hurts every so often and might have to go back in again because the same bullshit came back in it. Ganglion cyst in my left wrist. When the tendons in your wrist wear out and they leak fluid into your joints, etc.

Normal people can move their wrist backwards to a 90 degree angle with their forearm, I can only barely move it back 10 degrees, if anything at all some days.

Hurts like a twat after about half an hour of guitaring, but I'll survive.

Don't get your hopes up. The artwork and animation is amazing as any other Ghibli movie, but overall, it's merely an okay movie compared to the likes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Nausicaa. The new Ghibli movie that recently came out is based on the Borrowers. I still haven't seen it, but I've heard good things.

What's that? You think djent is the GENRE? Lol you silly boy, as of 2011 djent is STILL just an onomatopoeia.

I have to approove here. I can't see Djent as a musical genre, since it's basically just a new form of Technical and Progressive Metal with chugging riffs that sound like... "Djent". You can't name a new genre based only on how the musicians of that so called new genre play their palm-mutes...

At 7/16/11 03:31 PM, HeavenDuff wrote: Wouldn't go as far as saying "like Coldplay", but their most recent work is definitely more Rock then it is Metal.
Well, their new stuff is far closer to coldplay then 'emo"

We are just going way off track... Saying Katatonia is closer to Coldplay then Black Veil Brides is kind of useless, it's like saying Gorgoroth sound more like Nickelback then the Jonas Brothers...

When I think of "emo" I think of black veil brides and escape the fate. hahaha

I swear I didn't read that part before choosing Black Veil Brides for my example :P

I wish I went to see Agalloch when they played here in march, fucking 21+ shows.

Fucking teenagers at Metal gigs :P Lol, my girlfriend is 20 and she went to the show with me :)

It's like Paradise Lost improved to me. haha

Oh well, at least we agree that SX is a cool band :P

I found most of the songs on PL to be rather uninspired and boring. The drums and bass were easily the best part of the album. The guitar, keys, vocals and lyrics were all... so forgettable.

The lyrics? They were great on Paradise Lost, way better than what they are on Iconoclast. Most of the time, when I listen to Iconoclast, I can't help but think that the lyrical theme is kind of cool, but that the lyrics don't make much sense or that they just don't fit at all...

Like this one part of Dehumanized sounds play boring, generic and again Allen just fills the empty spots with "ooooh" all the time:

What's done is done - I'm dead inside
I'm what you've all become - Mindless and mesmerized

Dehumanized
I'm dehumanized
Don't you realize - I'm Dehumanized
Oh, and victimized
You can't break me
You unmake me - Dehumanized

Then the cheesy chorus of Bastard Of The Machines:

I see your demons rise -
Deep within your burning eyes
You are the Bastards of the Machine
The Bastards of the Machine

Dunno about that... but I get a weird Déjà vu right here...
And the chorus of The Lords Of Chaos that really tries way too hard to be the chorus of Set The World On Fire:

We rule, we fly
Above the lights of the neon sky
We fight, we cry
The Lords of Chaos will never die

Walls Of Babylon is probably my favorite song on PL though.

Solid track of course :)

There's a difference: I enjoy arguing, so when it's a topic that interests me I jump in.

As far as I can tell, you just argue with anyone who has a different opinion.

Well, you try to make it sound like it's different, but you do exactly the same as I do. And no, I don't fight with everyone who has a different opinion than I. Like I see a lot of people in here who think Mastodon are freakin' great... I couldn't agree less, but I don't fight with those who don't agree with me all the time...

UFO - Crystal Light
Om nom nom once again.

I'd much rather invest in getting more albums, so more tracks then having just one album with a bunch of toys. Even if I'm a big fan of the band I can't help but think that only those who don't know a lot of music will invest in such a thing. Ok, so we will call bands who use tremolo picking "Talalalalalalalal" and that will be a genre name. Why not? Cause it's stupid. Djent is basically just the sound of a palm-muted chord played by one of the bands you classify as "Djent". It doesn't describe any kind of musical genre and any band using that kind of palm-mute could be named Djent no matter if they were a Nu-Metal band, a Progressive Metal band or a Power Metal band. How does that make any sense to you?

I accept Djent as a new genre. I didn't say that I would refuse to change my mind. In fact, I understand why you think it's a genre. Of course there are elements of sound and structure shared by the different "Djent" bands. But I'm not ready to call it a new genre. Let's say I would start a Black Metal band and add some weird elements to it... something like Sigh. I would have started some kind of new sound in Black Metal. But when can you tell that a band has just created a new genre? To me, Djent just sounds like a mix of Sludgy Progressive Metal and Mathcore. I really just don't know if I'm ready to say Djent is a new genre...

Response to Metal Hell 2011-07-17 19:22:01

I agree with duff.

Bands like Periphery and TesseracT really are just a mixture of mathcore, some progressive metal elements and some technical death metal elements. And lots of Mygaysugar influence.

Saying it's a new genre is pretty premature, since there's only like ten bands and all of them are under ten years old. :P

I haven't listened to any of the new MA yet and looked it up on youtube and this is what I hear.... Seriously did static-X help with this CD? Of course I like Static-X (Don't hate me) but this isn't what morbid angel should be doing. How is this death metal? Fucking rape my ears.
