So is anyone here a fan of Pagan Altar? I just bought Mythical & Magical on a whim and I'm really enjoying it.

Yeah, I really dig it. Wish I could find their earlier stuff, but this is really kickass.

Hey guys, can anyone recommend me some more Folk Metal bands? I've really been getting into the Genre, and I just want more and more. I already know of:
Alestorm
Amon Amarth
Ensiferum
Eluveitie
Korpiklaani
Amorphis
Moonsorrow
Equilibrium
Metsatoll
Finntroll
Tuatha de Dannan
I was also wondering if there are any flamenco metal sounding artists like
Flametal? I really love their sound, and was wondering if there are artists with a similar sound as them,

What the fuck? Why do people think they're folk?

No idea. Mago De Oz, maybe? I'm not sure if that answers your question.
Primordial is pretty much the greatest folk metal band ever. Older Agalloch is kind of folkish too.

I really don't see how this isn't an attack against the three of us who were discussing the matter... But anyway... I'm not really pissed here. I just don't see why you would say something like that if you didn't mean it. Maybe it was a joke, but I failed to get it :O

Nothing wrong with that. At least you can really enjoy the figurines. You can place it somewhere you can see it and it's a cool decoration, like a poster, a banner or a patch. But what the fuck can you do with a box-set? Maybe I'm the one who's being narrow-minded or close-minded on this one... but please, if I am, guide me...

Mago De Oz isn't really exactly what I'm looking for, but they still have a nice sound and I like them, so thanks for recommending them.

Really loving the sound of Primordial right now, it's pretty awesome.
I've known of Agalloch for a while, but I haven't gotten around to listening to anything other than Odin, which I loved, so I'll be sure to check out more of them soon, folk or not. Thanks again for your recommendations.

If we're still talking about Death Magnetic coffins and Morbid Angel wooden boxes, then there isn't any point to those gimmicks. I see none at all.

I like box-sets. No matter if it's one of Belphegors masterpieces (there's a few more awesome ones from them around too), or if it's something like Megadeth's 'Peace Sells' 25th Anniversary box-set. The only bad thing is they're all expensive at times :( Especially the Lamb of God Super Deluxe box-set, which is pretty damn cool, no matter how un-metal they are.

I decided to give the Metal-Archives forum a chance and so far, I'm quite happy to hang around on there. I came across some interesting bands in the recommendation forum. The one that sticks out the most is Satan's Host whose recent works make an unspeakable combination of power metal and elements of black and death metal. I've only listened to their new album so I'll need to see what the rest is like.
At 7/19/11 10:42 PM, SpeedMetalSandwich wrote: Megadeth's 'Peace Sells' 25th Anniversary box-set
A friend of mine has taken interest in this box set. The only disc I'd want to hear from it is the original master.
So I went to see Children Of Bodom, The Devin Townsend Project, Septic Flesh and Obscura last night!
Now before anyone says "BUT YOU HATE COB, WHY WOULD YOU GO?" their are two answers:
1.) I fucking love devin townsend
2.) Free ticket as a late birthday present
Now my review:
Obscura came out first and had a different bassist for some reason, a substitute. So the bass kind of lacked all night, but it was excsuable since he wasn't their real bassist. The crowd rocked out to them and everything, and I enjoy them a lot on recording. But live, it didn't just translate well IMO. Obscura is definitely a band to enjoy on recording, not live.
Septic Flesh then came out, they sucked. Their bassist ONLY hit the e string and the b string. Those were the ONLY strings he touched all night long on his six string. He was also the vocalist and kept doing the same three stunts OVER and OVER and OVER: "Show me your metalic horns!" "Repeat after me, HEY HEY HEY" and "I wanna see a wall of death RIGHT NOW!" he did all three of those stunts sometime within EACH song they fucking played, the very last song had fucking three chants spread throughout it. Talk about a boring and generic performance! And most of their music was samples anyway, including the "keyboards" and the clean vocals. All in all, Septic Flesh are decent on recording but total shit live.
Then devin came out... and all hell broke lose. In the course of 40 minutes he managed:
To play seven songs
Air hump the back of a security guard's head
Pull down his shirt and rub his nipples while the other guitarist was soloing
Told a chick who took her shirt off "Put that shit back on! No one at a metal show wants to see your tits!"
Make awesome expressions nonstop
Change the lyrics to supercrush to a rant about how much he loves his mother
And best of all: had someone who had the same bald head, facial structure, body type, wearing the same exact clothes as him with a miniature version of his guitar come out on stage and jam with him randomly, all the while the "clone" mocked all devie's expressions! And in the end devin grabbed the guy and made out with him for like a minute. hahaha (pics coming later)
Devin's setlist:
1. By Your Command
2. Truth
3. Om
4. Supercrush
5. Kingdom
6. Stand
7. Juular
Then COB came on... well let's just say that a good third of the crowd left after devin and that all of COB's songs were horrendously off time. Why? Because both Alexi and their drummer were horribly drunk and couldn't play for shit. Roope and their bassist basically kept up really well though, considering alexi and their drummer kept switching up tempos and shit haha Their keyboardist though was REALLY the one to save them, if it weren't for his amazing keyboard solos I would've hated COB 100%. Nothing really much to say their.
I also got to meet devin after the show! :D
I'm the skinny ass one. I'm gross and sweaty after a long day of work followed by a four band concert, don't judge. ;D
A friend got the COB setlist, for those of you who actually care this was their set:
1. Not My Funeral
2. Bodom Beach Patrol
3. Needled 24/7
4. In Your Face
5. Children Of Bodom
6. Living Dead Beat
7. Hate Me!
8. Angels Don't Kill
9. Downfall
ENCORE:
10. Was It Worth It?
11. Are You Dead Yet?
12. Hate Crew Deathroll
And sadly this is the only pic I could find of devin grabbing and kissing his "clone" but it's a good shot nonetheless!
Of course the picture you get is one of two guys kissing.
Favourite band is Nirvana, grunge rock. But favourite song is this calling by All That Remains, I like Lamb of God some of their stuff, and Atreyu is amazing. As I lay Dying is in top ten too. Anyone going to Uproar this year? I am! I'm excited :)

Even though I like Nirvana, they;re not metal at all. :P
I'm not a fan of any of those other bands and I personally don't consider any of them metal except MAYBE lamb of god.
Try listening to In Flames, Soilwork, Arch Enemy and Children Of Bodom. You'd probably like all those bands. They're metal AND in the range of your taste, pretty decent entry level bands. :)

Haha I just posted that one because it was particularly lolzie. More devin with his twin!
At 7/20/11 03:05 PM, AniMetal wrote: So I went to see Children Of Bodom, The Devin Townsend Project, Septic Flesh and Obscura last night!
Well, to see Devin Townsend live is worth the trouble going through Children of Bodom. I could have used that argument back in March to see them live along with Ensiferum and Amon Amarth but the best I like the most from there already had an hour at Heidenfest last year and chances are they'd have even less time for being a support act (really?) for Children of Bodom. And besides, I already saw Sonata Arctica that month so I was happy enough.
That saying, the last quarter of 2011 will be awfully busy for live shows. I've got Cathedral booked so far and I need to consider Heidenfest 2011, Symphony X, Motörhead (might miss out due to tickets being roughly twice as much as last year), Opeth, Wolfsbane and Manowar (if they have a show in Manchester or London). Surely I'm going to be broke from all these shows. At least Wolfsbane will be playing in Liverpool as well as Motörhead.
On another note, I've written up the Judas Priest show for anyone who's interested to read through.
So could someone show me some good drone bands? I have a notion that drone sucks dick but I may have just listened to some bad bands. From what I understand the point is to make rhythm-less music and repeat it for some long time? In my book that kind of falls under " I have no musical talent " but I could be wrong. I dunno.
Also you should check out Kroda if you haven't already. They're the whole " folk black metal thing that really isn't folk." music.
Just found this out, but Manilla Road's Playground of the Damned has come out! I MUST BUY IT!!! NEED! And now that I'm back from Seattle, my Manilla Road reviews should be up more frequently, for those that care.

Yeah, I really want to hear the new album as well. However, it's only out on LP right now and the CD version will be out on 12th/15th August. That only makes me want to get the LP version, even if I only focus on CDs. I have placed a pre-order on the CD version so I'll have to patiently wait until then.
Unrelated but Hammers of Misfortune have announced "17th Street" as the new album title. The album is set for October release and I for one want this album badly. I only wonder what direction they take with the new album but the track listing as listed on their website has made me speculate on what it might be about.
And now that I'm back from Seattle, my Manilla Road reviews should be up more frequently, for those that care.
YAY!!
Probably late to the party but just in case, Decapitated's new album Carnival Is Forever is out. Anyone get it yet? I still need to. Wondering if it's worth it. I can't enjoy any of their other albums since I listened to Winds of Creation.
Also, more drone so I may form an opinion please.

How can you not enjoy Organic Hallucinosis. It's so groovy.

Earth
Sunn O)))
The only REAL pure drone band I listen to is Sunn O)))
Between their seven albums, and their split album with Boris, that's enough drone to last me forever.
Lesbian is also kind of drone. Well actually that's a lie. Lesbian is an orgasmic mix of black metal and drone, with progressive elements thrown in as well.
Hey you guys? Did you notice I said "drone" and not "drone metal"? Yeah, just because I enjoy a genre of music doesn't mean it's metal... maybe it's way more metal live, but on recording it's closer to ambient or something then metal.
Or at least, I think so.

This was my third time seeing them, each time is a very different setlist and a very different(but equally awesome) experience. :D
First time I saw them was january '10 which was BTBAM/Cynic/Devin/Scale The Summit and the second was october '10 which was just Devin/TesseracT.
I've got Cathedral booked so far
I'm fucking jealous, they already did their last america tour with Maryland Deathfest being their last US show ever... needless to say, I coudn't either see their date near me OR afford MDF this year.
That being said, I heard their vocals really suck live. But that's true for a lot of bands, I suppose.
I need to consider Heidenfest 2011
Do it up, fun time is fun.
I wish america still got the folk metal "fest" tours. I don't get why we don't, especially considering both paganfest americas and the one heidenfest were all major successes here, even totally selling out in some of the venues...
Symphony X

I could never get into Motorhead, they've always bored the hell out of me. Why people worship Lemmy is beyond me.

July 30th: Queensryche and a bunch of local bands opening
August 31st: Kamelot with the legendary Fabio on vocals! ...and three total shitfests opening. (Alestorm, The Agonist, Blackguard)
September 17th: Evergrey, Powerglove and The Absence! (Luckily for me, it's the only show on the whole north america tour where sabaton ISN'T playing because I actually find them horribly boring haha)
September 19th: Opeth & Katatonia
September 20th: The almight KYUSS! The Sword, Milligram and Monstro are all opening.
September 26th: Enslaved, Ghost, Alcest and a couple local bands TBA.
Their are lots of other shows i'm contemplating, but all those that I just listed are my absolute MUST sees.

Of course. My sister is wanting Heidenfest tickets for her birthday and she's also wanting new albums from Opeth and Van Canto. She might need to provide more birthday present ideas than that. :P

Heh, UK missed out on Paganfest this year for some odd reason. Because of that, I feared Heidenfest would miss out on the UK as well, especially the turnout for some of the bands from last year. However, with Turisas, Finntroll and Alestorm playing, the place should be packed.

I have no problem with that. Again, it might have to be cut considering the other shows. I hear Motörhead tour in the UK on an annual basis so I could easily see them again in a year or two.
Opeth,<3

Hopefully Queensrÿche are good here. They were better than what I expected at Manchester.

I'm glad it's not just me. :P Maybe I just need to take a break from power metal besides my favourites and later on remember why I really enjoyed it.
September 19th: Opeth & Katatonia
Here's hoping for a good show.
September 20th: The almight KYUSS! The Sword, Milligram and Monstro are all opening.
It must be bad of me to have not listened to Kyuss or The Sword. I will get to them eventually.

I swear, folk metal bands should realize that the only way they'll succeed in the US market is to have fest tours. They're popular enough by themselves in europe...
Especially Korpiklaani. They headlined Paganfest america part II, where most shows sold out.
Then the next year they did a headline tour with Tyr, Swashbuckle and White Wizzard and the tour was a massive flop, only getting a hundred or so people at each show. GEE I WONDER WHY. >.<

He would like it, then unlike it just so he could like it again.

PoS are pretty great.
My only problem with Pain Of Salvation is that both them and Mindflow are SOOOOOOOOO fucking close in sound that since I discovered Mindflow first it feels like PoS is just ripping them off and has better production.
Even though realistically, Mindflow's ripping PoS off if anything. haha
They're the band Blaze Bayley was in before he joined Maiden. I may have not heard much from them but if they have a show in Liverpool, I may as well see them.
I see, i'll download some of their stuff one day. Maybe.

July 30th: Queensryche and a bunch of local bands openingHopefully Queensrÿche are good here. They were better than what I expected at Manchester.
From what I understand, Queensryche has a habit of playing a TON off their latest album and then the rest basically all being 80's/1990 classics.
So it should be cool. :)
August 31st: Kamelot with the legendary Fabio on vocals! ...and three total shitfests opening. (Alestorm, The Agonist, Blackguard)I really can't get into Kamelot. Well, just the Epica album but yeah, it didn't click on for me.
My Kamelot breakdown:
First two albums - Jokes, not worth even listening to besides the song "Fire Within" ...that is unless you're like me and enjoy making fun of Mark Vanderbilt's terrible vocals. "WOOOOAH BLACK TOWAH, WHAT IS YO POWAAAAAAAAH?"
Siége Perilous - A good album and I really like it myself, but the production quality is fucking bad, khan's vocals are too high pitched for comfort and the songwriting is still kind of premature so MOST people don't like it.
The Fourth Legacy - Masterpiece, one of my favorite albums. Anyone who likes power metal should listen to this. Of the first four kamelot albums which DO NOT follow the well known kamelot sound this is the only album worth checking out.
Karma, Epica & The Black Halo: These three albums are the most popular and well known kamelot sound and are all great, but a bit cheesy or TOO epic at times for some people. Also, the lyrics put a lot of people off too. And some people dislike the guest appearences.
The last two: Generic progressive metal, still decent but mih. Nothing overally special.
The Fourth Legacy is definitely the most outstanding of all their albums, in my opinion.
I'm glad it's not just me. :P
Oh? About sabaton being boring?
Oh yeah, they bore the shit out of me. One of the most generic bands ever, and everyone I know loves them to death. When I saw them opening for Overkill and Accept in NYC back in april, everyone jizzed over them: But I was bored out of my skull for 40 minutes.
September 19th: Opeth & KatatoniaHere's hoping for a good show.
I already know it will be. I've seen Opeth twice before and katatonia once before. Should be amazing. <3
September 20th: The almight KYUSS! The Sword, Milligram and Monstro are all opening. It must be bad of me to have not listened to Kyuss or The Sword. I will get to them eventually.
The Sword aren't bad, they're just kind of generic and run-of-the-mill. A decent band, there's just tons of bands similar to them that do a better job. Like Sleep. Sleep >>>> The Sword.
Kyuss is amazing though. Definitely check out their last two albums "Welcome To Sky Valley" and "The Circus Leaves Town", both albums are masterpieces. Their earlier stuff was great too, but not as.
September 26th: Enslaved, Ghost, Alcest and a couple local bands TBA.I'd go just for Ghost, haha.
Heh, i'm going just for Alcest. I saw Enslaved once before, opening for opeth back in 2009. And I honestly find Ghost boring after listening to them for ten minutes. :P
At least September will keep you busy. I'm just glad these shows are not over here. September already has plenty of metal releases that month.
Yeah seriously, i'm going to be broke by the end of september.
Psychostick, Diamond Head, Primus and Dream Theater are all ALSO playing shows in september but I don't know if i'll do those for sure yet. (Primus and DT are both expensive bands to see, Diamond Head is playing in NYC so it's kind of a long drive, and psychostick tours a lot)
On the subject of metal gigs, if everything goes according to plan I'll be seeing from now to december:
TesseracT, Chimp Spanner
Between The Buried and Me, Animals as Leaders
Opeth, Pain of Salvation
Kvelertak, Trap Them
Textures, The Ocean, Aliases
Machine Head, some sup-par/bad support
