Alright, it's three and a half weeks before I go to see Iron Maiden in Birmingham. Yes, you can all envy me... except maybe Bahamut, since he's going to see them in London a day or two later.

So, has anyone been to a Maiden gig before? I've seen Alice Cooper live, but that's going to pale in comparison, I think. Photos will be forthcoming when I get back from the gig, since I'll only be able to communicate like Stephen Hawking for a few days afterwards.

Hints, tips and the like are appreciated.

WROOOOOONG!

I'm seeing them in Manchester while my sister is seeing them in London which clashes with the London meet.

Iron Maiden was the first concert I went to, 3 years ago. I don't really like how they always just play all their boring, most popular songs.

You're so weird, Immortal is the third band you're recommending for "thrash metal"....
No. I recommanded an album by Immortal that is Blackened Thrash Metal.

...i've never once, in my entire life, heard anyone call Immortal "blackened thrash" or read any reviews claiming they were even thrashie.

so I'm not about to name more "traditionnal thrash metal" bands, since he already knows them. Seing how much of a big Thrash Metal fan, I thought it would be great to open him up to some other genres. Starting with bands like Immortal which are obviously not straight up black metal, was to me, one of the best idea.

The only bands i've found that i'd consider blackened thrash metal are Witchaven and Destroyer 666. haha
Then do your homeworks and listen to some Immortal.

Again, everything i've ever heard about them points to them being black metal. Not "blackened thrash"

In fact, blackened thrash isn't even a genre. hahaha

You know that Traditional Metal is not a genre, right? Like, when this "traditional metal" you are talking about was first created, it couldn't be named "traditional metal" since there was really no tradition in this sound. So what you are talking about when you use this "wrong" genre classification, is Heavy Metal like Black Sabbath. Seing how Thrash Metal comes from Heavy Metal, it is pretty hard to draw a line between both genres, especially when it comes to classifiyng bands from the 80's. Still, I think you must be deaf if you don't hear any 80's Thrash Metal influences in Meanstreak.

Dude, genres change names over time. Did you know that back in the 80's that bands like D.R.I. and Nuclear Assault were called Metalcore?

Meanstreak has occasional thrashish riffs, but they aren't thrash.

Still what? They are definitely Thrash Metal. It's like saying Sonata Arctica or Hammerfall are not "real power metal" because they are dissed by the typical pm fan...

Nah i'm not saying they aren't real, just that it's unusual to see them recommended.

Plus, you need to consider that the kid already knows a shitload of Thrash Metal,
Here are some more bands you could try listenning to if you like Thrash Metal.
Exodus
Testament
Overkill
Destruction
Sodom
Tankard.

If he doesn't know these bands, then he really DOESN'T know shit about thrash metal like you claimed. These bands are all really fucking popular. Especially Overkill and Testament.

Some of my favorite thrash metal albums:

Blind Illusion- The Sane Asylum
Razor- Violent Restitution
Demolition Hammer - Epidemic of Violence
Wehrmacht- Biermacht
Spazztic Blurr- Befo da Awbum
Nuclear Assault- Game Over
Sadus- Illusions
Helloween- Walls Of Jericho
Forced Entry - As above so below.
Artillery - By Inheritance
Coroner - Punishment for Decadence
Nevermore - The Politics Of Ecstasy
Anthrax - Among The Living
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Kreator - Extreme Aggressions
Toxik - Think This!
Fates Warning - No Exit

These were in no particular order and I kept it with one album per band. All different styles of thrash.

Also, before someone comments because I know someone will, Fates Warning's "No Exit" IS in fact thrash metal. It's just that it's their ONLY thrash album. And Helloween's "walls of jericho" is in fact thrash metal, or at least it's way fucking closer to thrash metal then it is to traditional metal or power metal.

I know how to recommend very similar bands, but that was not what I was trying to do.

At 7/5/11 10:06 PM, AniMetal wrote: Also, The Agonist are awful.

They're either decent metalcore, or really shittie melodic death metal. Either way, why are you listening to them?
Their first record was good. It was consistant and not a random mess of chugcore like the second. I'm with you on this one Ani.

At 7/5/11 10:25 PM, J-Cobyz wrote: Well, a friend of mine reccomended me their second album, so i listened to them and i like them. And as Anti-pie said, she is hot as fuck, so it pretty much works for me.
Yup! And that's why I like Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and their awesome music.

Oh wait... Do I care about artistic integrity again? Sorry, I think I do.

Tits and music really shouldn't go together. Don't listen to an artist's music because you want to stuff your dick in her beaver... There really isn't any link between both anyway... Your appreciation of their personnal appearance really shouldn't influence your appreciation of the music...

In a way, these core bands are guilty of doing exactly the same as the pop industry... They use slutty girls with fake tits (like that slut from In This Moment) to sell more records. I think we should create a new genre classification for this kind of band... We'd call it something like Titscore.

By the way, I have seen that Alissa girl at a Threat Signal show in Montreal.

I heard completely opposite opinions on this record. I'm happy that someone from the Metal Hell shared his thoughts on it :)

I saw his recommendations as different flavours of thrash metal.

That was the point :)

On the other hand, Hammers of Misfortune are a win-win here. I love how John Cobbett is able to find highly talented female musicians for his band.

Oh shit! That's absolutely not what I meant. I think girls can play music very well. What I meant is that you shouldn't listen to the music FOR the tits. And you have to see the difference between actual female musicians and the sluts who sing in Metalcore bands.

At 7/6/11 10:45 AM, AniMetal wrote: I've never listened to the demos, are they anything special?

They are kind of cool. Dalnaki really likes them. The last demo album includes two tracks that would later be on Focus, but in a much more typical Thrash/Death Metal flavor.

...i've never once, in my entire life, heard anyone call Immortal "blackened thrash" or read any reviews claiming they were even thrashie.

Well, I guess some people should really learn the difference between Black Metal and Immortal... They are a Black Metal band, don't get me wrong, but their sound is so trashy, I thought it was a good idea to recommand them :)

In fact, blackened thrash isn't even a genre. hahaha

It's not a genre, I know, like Blackened Death Metal... It's just an adjective.

Dude, genres change names over time. Did you know that back in the 80's that bands like D.R.I. and Nuclear Assault were called Metalcore?

I didn't knew that.

Nevermore - The Politics Of Ecstasy

Power/Thrash Metal actually ;)

Anthrax - Among The Living

I forgot about Anthrax, good recommandation.

I suppose. I need to listen to them sometime, but the fact that black metal fans(both casual and serious) jizz over them nonstop makes me feel they're probably vastly overrated. Maybe not though.

Nevermore - The Politics Of Ecstasy
Power/Thrash Metal actually ;)

Later Nevermore albums start having power metal elements, don't get me wrong, but the first three Nevermore albums are pure thrash metal. Politics Of Ecstasy being their second album.

R.I.P. Nevermore, 1991-2011

Anthrax - Among The Living
I forgot about Anthrax, good recommandation.

They're actually not very well liked, i've found. Most thrash metal fans find them too boring and/or too cheesy and most nonthrash metal fans find them to be too simple and predictable.

But regardless of popular opinion, I love Anthrax. And even though Among The Living is their most successful album it is my favorite as well.

I listened to one of their songs on youtube once, was so bored that I never wanted to listen to anything else by them again.

Also I saw them on a festival once, they were old and gross looking. As for the music, it was very boring then too. It felt like they were just a worship band of the first three Cannibal Corpse albums.

They tried too hard to be prog with this one, but the riffs really don't seem to bring much to the progression. I can't help but think that most of the riffs would have fitted better in shorter tracks.

End Of Innocence is fucking awesome !!!

Ahrimanic bloody Trance buddy if you think that's the best they have to offer you need to hear the Malevolent Grain EP. It has their best song, A Looming Resonance. Almost 15 minutes of beautifully haunting melancholia, I can honestly say it's the most beautiful song I've ever heard. If only the second track Hate Crystal was better I would probably hold it as my highest rated release of any band ever.
