That statement is untrue. Most musicians take part in the writting in Dream Theater. Each one of the guys has written good tracks for the band.

Oh yeah, they all do write. But Moore and Myung wrote almost all their best songs specifically. :P

Kevin Moore was a great keyboardist, but tell me how Rudess makes that much of worst job then him...

Because Kevin Moore actually wrote songs. Ruddess writes wankfests.

Technically Ruddess is a better keyboardist, but he jacks off so much on his keyboard that it isn't melodically pleasing half the time. As Moore always was semi-technical and melodic.

Plus, Moore wrote Space Dye Vest. Not Ruddess.

So with Moore out of the band, and with "In The Name Of God" being the last song Myung ever wrote with the band... basically they suck now.
I'm not a huge fan of their most recent material, but saying that they suck is an overstatement.

They don't suck now. But they suck compared to their old stuff.

And the fact James LaBrie's vocals really went down the shitter doesn't help matters any.
He's a great vocalist...

Don't get me wrong, he was. Awake probably has some of my all time favorite vocals of all time... buuuuuuuuuuut....

If you go to Ron Jarzombeck's personnal website, I'm pretty sure you could get it for a good price. It's not like the label stopped making copies of the album. Or did they? I don't think so.

Well, I'm seeing very little quantities of it on Amazon and the site itself is selling it for £17.29. That's how much they sell some of the Manilla Road albums.

Who said I bought any Manilla Road albums from Amazon? I've been buying them elsewhere and not even eBay has been very helpful with finding their albums. Actually, I did get two albums of theirs from Amazon but only because I couldn't find them any cheaper. Blotted Science on the other hand, I've found their album for £10.

Someone from the Metal Hell mentionned the band UFO a few months ago, saying everybody in the Metal Hell should listen to it, as it was a kind of Proto Metal band. So I got the album Phenomenon by them and I'm impressed :) It's a great album, and 70's rock never sounded so good to me.

Great band, I really support the idea that everybody in here should listen to their stuff :)

I really like the new song, actually.

Post-Rock really is sneaking into Metal nowadays. Not that it's bad, but it's true that some bands should really stick to their original sound.

I think it's been a good thing so far. There's lots of post-rocky metal that I think sounds good, like Maudlin of the Well, Isis, Pelican, etc.

And, of course, Agalloch.

Good band. But they just tend to sweep and wank just a little too much on that album. The first three or four tracks of the album are awesome though. I'd say the rest of the album is not quite as memorable as these few tracks, except for the track A Common Hope :)

So what would you say is their best album?

I do find LaBrie annoying sometimes, the worst examples sticking out in my mind being on Train of Thought. And they were so much better years ago, but I do think they still made some good music later on, including this recent track they released. I haven't heard Black Clouds and Silver Linings, though, and Systematic Chaos was disappointing, that is, from what I even remember from that album. I don't think I even listened to the whole thing more than once. Although they're not as good as Images and Words or Awake or a Change of Seasons, I still think Scenes From a Memory and Octavarium are great albums, and Train of Thought is pretty good, especially As I Am and Stream of Consciousness.

What I'd rather hear than a new Dream Theater album now, though, is either a new Liquid Tension Experiment album or a new project with Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, and John Myung...without James LaBrie, and either with or without Jordan Rudess. I wouldn't care that much either way.

Seing how well these few bands are doing, I really can't say I'm against the idea of mixing Post-Rock elements with Metal.

So what would you say is their best album?

I'm not a huge fan of Gorod but I think they make pretty good Death Metal, they just tend to wank sometimes. It's not making the whole record bad in anyway though... They don't sweep like scene kids on cocaine, they have good song-writting no matter how technical their music is. My personnal favorite is Process Of A New Decline, the one album we were discussing. The four first tracks are great, but the others are all ranging from decent to good. There isn't anything about this record that should make you not want to listen to it. Maybe you could listen to the album Neurotripsicks two.

I do find LaBrie annoying sometimes, the worst examples sticking out in my mind being on Train of Thought. You guys keep comparing the newer stuff to their best albums, which are also some of the best Metal albums ever released. I don't think their most recent stuff. Black Clouds and Silver Linings was kind of better than Systematic Chaos. Which is... a dissapointing album, yes... but it as a few good tracks. The new song makes me hope for a good or a decent album at least.

What I'd rather hear than a new Dream Theater album now, though, is either a new Liquid Tension Experiment album or a new project with Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, and John Myung...without James LaBrie, and either with or without Jordan Rudess. I wouldn't care that much either way.

They said they would not make any other Liquid Tension Experiment material because most of the members of LTE ended up playing in Dream Theater two. The only exception was Tony Levin. Even though I don't think we will ever see another LTE album getting released, it would be awesome to get one.

And about Mike Portnoy... I don't think he's ever going to come back... or play with these guys...

No. The guy who mentionned them said everybody who didn't know about them didn't have their place in the Metal Hell. So even if I'm happy the band was mentionned, I said "It's not because they influenced the first metal bands that you are a "fake" metalhead for not listenning to them."

choices..we all got em and make em
leave it up to you guys...it's your club too

If we were to have 4 squires, than I think they should be nominated by the Horsemen themselves. Each Horseman would pick one. If the other Horsemen and the regulars approove of this idea, then I think we could do this.

One question though... Don't you think that we would have too many people to do the same job, especially considering that we don't have a lot of regular members or users asking to join the club?

Looking at your first post I can easily tell you that you probably listen to more Thrash Metal then me, but I'm pretty sure I can fill some gaps here and there. I'll try to avoid naming the bands you already mentionned in your first post...

So for Thrash Metal...

- I suggest you listen to the Demo albums of the band Cynic. They started as a Death Thrash band, I'm pretty sure that you will enjoy this. If you feel adventurous, listen to the album Focus by the same band. It's a masterpiece :) Not Thrash Metal, but still a masterpiece :)

- I will mention the band Evile, even if AniMetal think they are shit, I think that as a Thrash Metal fan, you should listen to it and make your own opinion.

- I suggest you listen to the album Damned In Black by the Norwegian band Immortal. This is a Black Metal band... but this album could arguably be describded as a Blackened Thrash Metal album. Not sure if you will enjoy this, but I still think it's worth mentionning it.

- Try the one and only album released by all female american thrash metal band Meanstreak. This album is great, and if you enjoy 80's Thrash Metal, you might enjoy this a lot!

- Morbid Saint, is definitely one of the greatest Thrash Metal band I've heard in my life. Their only Full Lenght album Spectrum Of Death is a TM masterpiece !!! It's raw, agressive, straight to the point Thrash Metal!

- Last but not least, the Progressive/Technical Thrash Metal band... Watchtower. This is also a great Thrash Metal band, my favorite album by them is Energetic Disassembly. This one album, I highly recommand to any Thrash Metal fan :)

Now let's do this with Melodic Death Metal bands... I will name just a few, because I know a lot of Melodeath as it was one of my favorite genres when I first started to listen to Metal.

- Kalmah is and will forever be my all time favorite Melodic Death Metal band. Raw and powerful riffs. strong guitarists duo. Great keyboard lines, and a sound that evolves throughout the years. I'm pretty sure that there will be at least one album by them that will suit your taste :)

- Nightrage. Powerful and heavy Melodic Death Metal band. This one band has had a lot of different vocalists join their ranks and leave after recording only one album. In my opinion their three first Full Lenght albums were awesome !!! Sweet Vengeance, Descent into Chaos and A New Disease Is Born are all excellent Melodic Death Metal albums. Tomas Lindberg was my favorite vocalist, but sadly, he left after the recording of Descent into Chaos.

- Then comes the Technical Melodic Death Metal band, Arsis. Very melodic song-writting along with some technical riffs. Pretty cool band I guess :P

- Darkane is a band that I simply couldn't just avoid mentionning. I will just finish with this one, and if you enjoy any of the bands I've listed, then just tell me and I'll recommand a few more. There is a reason why I decided to finish with Darkane, and it's because they play... Melodic Death/Thrash Metal. You asked for Melodeath bands and Thrash Metal bands... here is one that plays an hybrid genre that mixes both :)

Have fun, and welcome to the Metal Hell again :)

Symphony X - The Odyssey (and I've been listenning to this track during all the time it took my to write this post... damn! :P)
