I seriously think your definition of Power Metal is too restrictive.

Even if you disagree, I think that they have obvious power metal influences. Also Thrash? Maybe, yes. Since these two genres did came from the same roots, it wouldn't surprise me if they took influences from both.

Helloween: I think inspired basically all power metal, and has some pretty power metal but it's not really straight up. Kind of like how Black Sabbath is proto doom metal, but isn't exactly doom metal.
Edguy: Hellfire Club aside, are totally power metal... just not very good power metal. XD
Symphony X: They totally have power metal elements, but they're definitely closer to thrash then power.

Also, power metal and thrash don't have "similar roots" - power came FROM thrash, same with death metal and black metal. They all started off as thrash metal and branched off.

I will concede that Snuff was probably the most blatant ballad on the album and that tracks like Butcher's Hook and I think it was Gemetria, or something like that, which was similar to the title track in sound. I still feel the title track was the only one that had a consistent, cohesive, metal sound.

In my opinion the title track was the only good one on the album and I paid good money for the whole thing so forgive me if I come off a little bitter about it.

Im thinking about ordering the rest of the Amon Amarth cd's I don't have. Johan Hegg claims he's an atheist but I have a feeling he's in the closet heathen. :3 I want to get some Tyr stuff too, I heard they made a new album is it any good?

I do see where you're coming from with this statement but I'm more talking about genres that really, REALLY don't say anything about the music such as hard rock, epic metal and viking metal. Epic metal is a bad one since it could refer to Rhapsody or any 10+ minute song when it's mostly been related with American traditional metal bands.

Now that's an interesting thought. I've always known folk metal doesn't really go on its own. There's always other metal elements with folk metal bands, unless someone shows me otherwise.

Probably because Amon Amarth has musical talent similar to that of Green Day.
Thats just bullshit.

That's not bull shit. Anyone in here who's been playing guitar for at least a year knows how damn simple ALL of Amon Amarth's music is. They tune their guitars to Drop B to sound extra heavy, and play simple power chord riffs with incredibly slow tremolo picking fills that even a five year old could play.

Not to mention all of their songs sound the same.

Oh, I guess I've never properly said some of my favorite bands and requested to join or all that:

Within The Ruins
All Shall Perish
Veil of Maya
Bongzilla
Animals As Leaders (not completely metal, but definitely some aspects)
Born of Osiris
Kalmah
Wintersun
After The Burial
Texas In July

I listen to a lot of deathcore/progressive stuff, I need some recommendations.

Sorry I haven't been around lately guys. Been having PC trouble for a while now. First, I have another entry into my discog review of Manilla Road, Out of the Abyss. As always, CC welcome!

I would also like to weigh in on the Agalloch/creative/folk metal/whatever-the-fuck-it-is-now debate. I feel like Agalloch definitely has elements of folk, and anyone who says otherwise hasn't actually listened to them. Also, I kinda agree with AniMetal about folk not being a real genre. I would say there are bands with folk elements, but I wouldn't label them folk metal.

And there is my two cents! WOOOOOO I CONTRIBUTED TO SOMETHING!

So Relapse Records are releasing another Death remaster, this time it's the album Human. I might buy it just to own one of my favourite Death albums.

I also can't stop listening to The Ocean - Precambrian. One of the best metal albums I've heard in a while.

I was all up and ready to say not metal but it turns out Metal Archives has them all listed apart from Texas in July. They're even tagged as metalcore and deathcore, when the hell did they change their policy?

Because metalcore and deathcore are metal as long as the metal elements are prominent enough.

It's funny how you take the time to mention that Animals As Leaders is not "completely metal", but that you simply make no mention of the fact that most of your list is deathcore... so not metal...

Veil Of Maya, Born Of Osiris, All Shall Perish, After The Burial, Texas In July and Within The Ruins do not qualify as metal bands, So you basically have 4 metal bands on your list.

If you are still interrested in joinning the Metal Hell, I could still give you some recommandations based on the few bands you have listed, though.

I named my favorite bands, being the ones I listened to most. I also listen to In Flames, Mors Principium Est, a little bit of Norther, The Acacia Strain, At The Gates, The Contortionist...but that's why I want recommendations, so I can widen my view.

No, actually. If you dig deeper in metal, you will find out they are completely different. Most Metal fans can't stand "core" bands. Deathcore and Metalcore sometimes share elements with Melodic Death Metal bands. But almost every other metal genres have nothing to do with deathcore and metalcore.

I named my favorite bands, being the ones I listened to most. I also listen to In Flames, Mors Principium Est, a little bit of Norther, The Acacia Strain, At The Gates, The Contortionist...but that's why I want recommendations, so I can widen my view.

In Flames are a Melodic Death Metal band, who lately... started to record shitty Metalcore and Nu-Metal influenced Melodeath. Mors Principium Est and Norther are Melodic Death Metal bands. At The Gates are a melodic death metal band... but also the biggest fucking influence of metalcore bands. The Acacia Strain and The Contortionist are core bands, so not metal.

You have enough metal bands listed there to join the Metal Hell. If you are interrested in joinning, then I shall welcome you to The Metal Hell.

Now for recommandations...

You said you like Bongzilla... Because you like them, I suggest you listen to ISIS, Dystopia, Mastodon, Boris (their Stoner Rock/Metal work, maybe not their Drone stuff), Electric Wizard (get the album Dopethrone, it's one of my all time favorites), High On Fire. And maybe... Om and Sleep...

You also said you liked Kalmah and Wintersun... Soooo I suggest you give a listen to some other Melodic Death Metal bands like Arch Enemy, Arsis, Children Of Bodom, Darkane, Ensiferum, NIGHTRAGE !!!!, Scar Symmetry and maybe Soilwork.

And em, if you like early In Flames, listen to Dark Tranquillity, it's great :)

Agreed. Their new stuff is terrible, the only album I have right now is Jester Race, but I've heard some other albums like Whoracle.

Electric Wizard (get the album Dopethrone, it's one of my all time favorites),

I have this album, I just didn't mention it because it's lost on my computer somewhere and I never had a chance to listen to much of it.

High On Fire, Sleep...

As far as this goes, I haven't listened to much High on Fire, but I know I loved Matt Pike when he was in Sleep, so I'm sure I would like High on Fire as well. I've listened to a few of the melodeath bands you mentioned, I'll have to check the others out. Thanks.

No... I'm just so tired to ear such things! They tune their guitars to Drop B = FACT. The play stimple power chord riffs = FACT. Slow tremolo picking fills = FACT.

Now this is a review I can relate to. Out of the Abyss is one of my least favourites from them but at least I enjoy a few tracks. As for the next album The Courts of Chaos, it's a hell lot better so I'm looking forward to that review.

At 6/10/11 01:48 PM, DeIirium wrote: Because metalcore and deathcore are metal as long as the metal elements are prominent enough.

That's actually true. MA will allow metalcore and deathcore bands as long as they stay more in the metal side than the core side. The only problem with that is the lack of consistency with those policies.

At 6/10/11 09:13 PM, Anti-pie wrote: Well thats just your opinion which really doesn't matter to me. Amon Amarth is awesome.

I will throw in my thoughts on Amon Amarth in the ring. They're not one of my favourites but they can still write good songs. I've enjoyed Twilight of the Thunder God reasonably well. There is a song or two I really like from the latest album, especially Töck's Taunt: Loke's Treachery Part II.

Response to Metal Hell 2011-06-11 10:07:27

I still like Amon Amarth, and I enjoy some of their music, but they don't deserve the hype they get because they really aren't that talented at what they do. They're the type of band that would get played on the radio and kids would say "WOAH MAN SO HEAVY THIS IS THE BEST MUSIC EVER."

So I finally got around to listening to Ripper Owens era of Judas Priest and personally I find these albums very dull. Although Owens' vocals are overall poor, that's not the main issue with these albums. There are some good ideas within these two albums but it doesn't seem focused that well. Too many forgettable tracks around here.

Well, I didn't see Bullet, but I saw Epica who played just before Bullet. Epica was nice (the programme said they have "epical intensity" lol), but Iced Earth was FUCKING AWESOME!
It rained heavily during half of the set (the rain started when they played a song from "Night of the Stormrider". The stage and part of the amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen are roofed, but I was standing in the very first row without roof. I was wearing a raincoat, but my legs and my shoes got soaked nevertheless and by the time I fought my way under the roof it didn't matter anymore...
Oh well, the show was awesome nevertheless.

But if you want some good recomendations I suggest asking the NG Nu-metal/Metalcore crew.
