I think they are ok, but I really think they are over-hyped :O
But Agalloch are not. Listen to their stuff :)
I believe I owe you guys a big fat thank you for all of this prog goodness. SikTh, Haken, Cynic, Textures...
I'm loving them all
just about to listen to The Ocean
When I say Agalloch or hear someone say it it always sounds like someone giving a blowjob.

Seeing you're here quite a bit, do you have any interest in joining the Metal Hell? If you are, just list ten of your favourite METAL bands down and one of the horsemen will review your application.

I guess I could, I do like metal, but most of it is more well know stuff which you guys might have the same views on as Slipknot.
Well I know Mastodon are okay to say, they're probably my favourite metal band aswell.
Lamb of God? That seems pretty metal to me.
I like a few Judas Priest songs.
Dope? Though I have a feeling they're Nu-Metal.
Testament.
Static-X?
Rage Against The Machine? - Maybe not because they often use rap sort of style.
Rammstein was a no, wasn't it? Though I don't see how.
Motorhead.
Misfits.
Megadeth.
Faith No More, maybe?
Now that it comes round to it I really don't like that much metal... Huh.
I was going to give Dir En Grey a listen, I have no idea what they sound like though, apparently they're good.
Time for another post in the Metal-ABC.
This time it's *drum roll*:
Carnivore!
I was thinking long and hard about this one, as I have the feeling Carnivore aren't really what one would consider "lesser known", but in my opinion most people only heard the name because of Pete Steele (RIP), who was the singer for Carnivore before he founded Type O. So yeah, have fun! :)

Thumbs up for Mastodon, Judas Priest (even if you only like a few songs), Testament, Motörhead, Megadeth and Faith No More (even MA has given them the green light and they DO have some metal tracks out there). The rest are a no (not too sure about Misifts, I really need to listen to some of their albums) but you haven't done too bad.

Not to worry, we can provide you with recommendations to get you going. It might be an idea to check out Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Slayer to start with assuming you haven't really listened to those bands and see what you enjoy the most from them.

I love Mastodon. I heard that their next album is gonna be less prog and more similar to Leviathan than Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye. I'm not really looking forward to the new album as much after hearing that.

From what I've heard of Anthrax they aren't very good, in my opinion. I've heard one or two from Black Sabbath, not too bad. Iron Maiden are good, forgot to mention them, and Slayer have a few good tracks.

The Misfits are punk rock, but you should listen to them anyway because they're the best punk band of all time.
I don't see why Lamb of god aren't considered metal here.
At 5/7/11 01:24 PM, Snuff wrote: From what I've heard of Anthrax they aren't very good, in my opinion.
Yeah, they are hit and miss but they are one of the big four of thrash. Among the Living is a really good album, though.

You'll be amazed at the amount of great tracks Black Sabbath have played that are not War Pigs, Paranoid nor Iron Man. One great song of theirs is Black Sabbath.

I do have a few punk rock bands on my list of stuff to listen to and I'll double check on The Misfits.

Actually, I forgot to mention the borderline comment on Lamb of God but any bands that are borderline should be good enough.
I welcome Snuff to the Metal Hell! We may have gotten off on the wrong foot but I'm sure he's willing to explore further in the heavy metal universe.
So, I finally got around to picking up Ghost's Opus Eponymous. And..... OMGKSJLGJSDGJDF:LJG!!! So far easily my favorite album of the year. It reminds me of BOC mixed with Mercyful Fate....and that's definitely a good thing.
Proud Demon residing in the METAL HELL!

Oh right, thanks, I didn't realised I'd qualified :3
Yeah, the whole thing with Slipknot was really just me trying to ask why you guys think they aren't metal, but going about it in the wrong way. Sorry about that!
So any other Metal bands you think I should give a listen to?
Oh yeah, why are Lamb of God borderline? They seem just full on metal to me, but my definition of metal is probably quite different to most people's here.

Damn, that's kind of disappointing. Not that I don't love their more sludgy stuff, but Crack the Skye is easily their best record.
Hey guys, been a page or two since I posted here. Believe it or not, I go here all the time, mostly when I'm drawing a blank for songs to buy.

Since I'm biased towards Judas Priest and the like, I personally would recommend the earlier Gamma Ray music, which is what Bahamut referred me to. Based on your band choices I would say Slayer (preferably Seasons in The Abyss) and maybe Animals As Leaders.

Lamb Of God is borderline because their style fits into the 'Metalcore' genre. That isn't to say they are a bad band, they just aren't the same as the others talked about here. (personal opinion)
To quote an admin of heartofmetal quoting Wikipedia:
'Metalcore is a fusion genre that incorporates elements of hardcore punk and heavy metal. The term is a portmanteau of heavy metal and hardcore punk. Metalcore is typically melodic, emphasizes breakdowns, and sometimes discards the conceptual trappings of both its parent genres.'

I agree, I much prefer it to Laviathan and Remission. In fact I'm writing a review of it for Enlgish at the moment.
I love the circus/symphony feel this track has.
Here I am, bored with everything.

I heard it a while ago on Spotify and it's really good. Hopefully I see one shop selling it down in London when I go there next weekend.

The next bands I'd recommend are the key artists from all the subgenres such as Overkill and Kreator for thrash metal (going beyond the big four), Blind Guardian and Helloween for power metal, Dream Theater and Symphony X for progressive metal, Ensiferum for folk metal, Immortal for black metal, Death for death metal and Candlemass for doom metal. That isn't all the subgenres covered but that should keep you going for the time being and will give you an idea on which bands you like more than others.

I've heard Panic Attack by DT, and I loved that, so I'll give them a listen for sure. Any album in particular?
I'd like to get more into Thrash metal too, so I'll give your recommendations a listen, maybe some related artists aswell.

Awesome. And it has Gojira's lead singer, which gives me a big ol' boner.
Ha, this whole time I've not listed my 10 favorite metal bands. I suppose I should officially join huh?
1. Between the Buried and Me
2. Cynic
3. Protest the Hero (not sure if that counts)
4. Amaseffer
5. Textures
6. Haken
7. The Ocean
8. Animals as Leaders
9. Scale the Summit
10. The Human Abstract
and if PTH doesn't count
11. SikTh

Ziltoid The Omniscient is a must. Also, Addicted and Terria are great too. I prefer Addicted though.
I'm downloading 'Deconstruction' right now I've found out it has lead singers guest appearing from Gojira, Cynic, Opeth and Between The Buried and Me.

Me neither.

At least a billion :)

Cause they are mostly influenced by Metalcore and Groove Metal. And we all know how awesome that is, right?

Where did you find Deconstruction??
Does anybody here listen to Transmetal? They have a lot of albums, so I was wondering if anybody could recommend any of their stuff.
