All I've heard is Thaumogenesis, so I'll recommend that one.

That's the one Bruce also recommended, so I guess I'll check this one out, first.

That's their Stoner Rock/Metal stuff. Get the album Absolutego :)

So right now, I'm listenned to a band named Control Denied... and I'm surprised no one ever mentionned them before. Well... maybe you did... but I don't remember ever reading anything about them on the Metal Hell... It's a band formed by Chuck Schuldiner... and while it's more of a prog/power metal band, the riffs are still high quality Shuldiner riffs!

I have Monument, which is pretty good, but I don't find it all that great. The first track, Shaping the Clouds, is my favorite. I find most of the rest to be decent, but not very memorable. Would you say the other two albums are better?

Monument is by far their worst, with Carving Desert Canyons being a HUGE improvement and their best overall. However, if you prefer a darker sound, you may like The Collective more. I highly recommend listening to their other albums.

At 5/4/11 11:14 AM, SomaGuye wrote: Any of you guys listen to The Human Abstract? I understand most of you would call the metalcore, but seriously, their musicianship is far too advanced to be put in that tag. I just read a track by track explanation of their new album Digital Veil, it's amazing how much thought goes into each song.

Honestly, I don't care for their new album. Their new lead vocalist sounds like every other screamer in metal. I can't help but keep comparing Digital Veil to Nocturne, which was an amazing album. Quite frankly, Digital Veil doesn't compare.

At 5/4/11 05:10 PM, ZeroGravity wrote: So i've been venturing out from metalcore recently. I've fallen in love with BTBAM, and i've loved Opeth for a while.

Any awesome progressive metal bands i should give a listen?

Ah yes. Glad to see a BTBAM fan! Colors is their best album by far. My favorite album of all time. Flawless; an amazing piece of work. Prog-metal is definitely my favorite genre. My recommendations:
The Human Abstract - Nocturne (album). As I mentioned earlier in the post, this is THA at their best. Mea Culpa and Vela, Together We Await the Storm are the best songs on the album.
Protest the Hero - One of my favorite bands all around. Their three albums Kezia, Fortress, and Scurrilous are all very good with many of my favorite songs being on Fortress. Great introductory songs:
Palms Read (Fortress)
Bloodmeat (Fortress)
Turn Soonest to the Sea (Kezia)
Tapestry (Scurrilous)
Scale the Summit - An amazing instrumental prog-metal band (again mentioned earlier in the post). Carving Desert Canyons is their best album. You can find my recommended intro songs on the previous page.
Animals as Leaders - Another instrumental prog-metal band except more melodic. They only have once self titled album (and a single digital release from last year) but their stuff is some of the best I've heard in awhile. Great intro songs:
CAFO (my favorite)
Tempting Time
Wave of Babies
Amaseffer - an Israeli prog-metal band. They too only have one album out, "Slaves for Life," but it's really some great stuff. I recommend listening to it the whole way through.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. I've heard lots of good things about Opeth but have never taken a listen. Recommendations?

I listened to some stuff by Khlyst on youtube. pretty fuckin' wicked sounding drone and ambient stuff. Well, some of it was. Some of the stuff was just annoying. I may have stumbled across noise metal. Some of this stuff should be used in soundtracks for survival horror games. Actually, that would be awesome. a survival horror game that uses music from Khlyst and Sunn 0)) and the like. Oh, and Spektr. They'd be perfect for that.

Have any of you guys heard of Spektr? They're like a cross between black metal and dark ambient music. I have their album, Mescalyne. That album is a trip. a bad trip.

At 5/4/11 08:27 PM, HeavenDuff wrote: It's a band formed by Chuck Schuldiner... and while it's more of a prog/power metal band, the riffs are still high quality Shuldiner riffs!

And don't forget, Steve DiGiorgio on bass!

Yeah, this is the kind of power metal I actually dig. There's not a lot of power metal I know of that I can appreciate anymore besides Helloween and Angra. I used to listen to a lot of power metal when I was like 16 or 17. I'm tired of most of it now.

They are chug-chug wannabe evil hard rock with a kid who uses a double-kick on drums. You think that's metal? Sorry, but it's not. Just like Rammstein or System Of A Down are not metal. And don't go using that silly "you don't like popular stuff" argument. Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth are all legitimate Metal bands who are far more popular than shitknot.

They are a brand of hard rock that pretends to be metal, commonly known as Nu-Metal. So just like Black Veil Brides or A Day To Remember are not Hardcore, no matter how hard they want to, Slipknot is not Metal.

Slipknot are not metal because they have often tried to blend rap like vocals into heavier sounding music. <---my opinion

Primal Fear is pretty similar, especially since the vocalist tried out to replace Rob Halford after he left. So when he didn't get the gig, he started his own band, and a lot of it is pretty similar to Painkiller.

First bands that come to mind after reading your list are Sikth, Haken, The Ocean, Edge of Sanity and Mastodon. And Opeth are awesome by the way, this is coming from someone that also loves BTBAM if it means anything. As a starter album I'd recommend either Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries.

There's not really any objective definition for what is metal and what isn't, to be honest. People have different opinions about it, and this club doesn't consider Slipknot to be a metal band.
