Seriously? I didn't know that anyone actually preferred that bland, outdated sound.
I take it you seem to think guitar tone has only gotten "better" with modern production values. I am guitarist, a musician, and an artist above all. When recording guitar, finding an aesthetically unique guitar sound is an exciting art form.
Ponos is right. Bergtatt as one of the best production I have ever heard. The guitar sounds great on this record. And overall, this is probably the Ulver album with the best production, if not, the best Black/Folk Metal production I have ever heard. It remains unmatched. And only Agalloch as found a way to somewhat bring us back to this kind of sound with From Which Of This Oak and Pale Folklore. And before Ponos or anybody gets mad at me, I didn't say it's the same, but I like how both gets a very good feeling from the production.
Listenning to bands like August Burns Red and usually most metalcore bands, I feel that the production makes it plastic... and "fake" if you know what I mean. It's so clean... it feels like silicon tits to me... While it makes it bigger, it's not a garantuee of quality.
Guitar recorded in the past is pleasing to my ear. Understanding the influence of guitar tones and how they have shaped and inspired future music is enjoyable. The classic albums of the past have great tones.
This is why I was against the re-recording of Focus, by Cynic. To me, the original production was great, and it only got worst with the years.
The way modern big budget metalcore, hardcore, and deathcore is recorded today is what I consider bland. A lot of bands guitars sound similar, a lot of modern bands production is similar. And a lot of it is squeaky clean and over produced, pop and dance music production values seeping in to the veins of the once great metal genre.
Haha! It's funny you say so, cause I didn't read your whole post before starting to write my reply, and I've already stated previously, how I dislike metalcore's production. The Over-Production is what kills the music. It makes the music sounds very bad.
Modern big budget trendcore bands like BMTH, Parkway, Amity Affliction, Suicide Silence, Bullet, they all record their winy ass pussy core like Britney Spears would, making it appealing to a broad spectrum of people so as to make more money. And most are just kiddies being told how they should sound, instead of actually giving a shit and having a say about what they sound like.
Well said :P
Old school metal was recorded in so many interesting and awesome ways, nowadays it can be recorded really shit.
Most important, is that all bands had a different sound. The production was part of the writting process. You would not only write the riffs, drum paterns and stuff like that, but also work on the sound, the production and the ambience it would create, along with the feeling you want to share with the listenners.
Metalcore truly has stained how great metal was, because when people think of metal, they don't think of the greats, they think of Bring Me The Horizon.
True :'( And that really kills me...
Ponos is definitely right. And I feel there should be a lot more people reading these lines, cause he said all that needed to be said about music production and quality.
Believe it or not, Bergtatt is probably the album with the BEST recording quality for all metal albums. That is at least... In my humble opinion.
