A lot of the songs have really cool structures and great parts about them, but there are other parts that just don't thrill me.
Alright, good to hear. Invasion doesn't get much love, sadly. Also, I love Shelton's voice on the album. I pretty much hated it the first time I listened, but it's kind of grown on me. You listen to Metal yet? It's no Crystal Logic or The Deluge, but it's still pretty good.

Yeah, I managed to track down all of Manilla Road's studio albums, thanks ot my local record store owner. Apparently he's a pretty big fan of Manilla Road, so he got a lot of them cheap for me! It was nice. And I will be reviewing Metal next, so look for that review soon!

Even The Deluge and Mark of the Beast? Those albums are RARE AS FUCK! I was lucky enough to get Mystification and Roadkill/Out of the Abyss for £15 each. Since I can't get those two albums for the time being, I'm left with The Circus Maximus, Voyager and After Midnight to get. Hopefully by the time I get the last obtainable album of theirs, they'll have their new album ready to release. Mark Shelton recently stated that the new album is finished and should be out in 2-3 months time.

Yep. EVERY. SINGLE. STUDIO. ALBUM. As I said, the guy who runs my local hard rock/heavy metal record store is a HUGE Manilla Road fan, so he really helped me find them all. Haven't heard of After Midnight though. Is that a live album or what?

It's a live album covering a show of theirs back in 1979 but containing songs that haven't been heard before.

Weird, COB's third album has the highest score on MA and their fourth album scores higher than their second.
Have you ever been to a COB concert before?

Their fans are MORE obsessive than pantera fans or Bring Me The Horizon fans.

Seriously.

That's just the most typical argument almost everyone use to hate on a band. "OH THERE FANS R SUCH DIXSUCKERS DIXHEADS OLOLOLZ!". If you hate COB so much, why the fuck would you ever be concerned in making such hateful arguments about them? It's just useless, or are you just trying to stimulate their fans rage? Also, why the fuck would you even go to a COB concert, well, atleast, I am assuming you did, since you know so much about their fans obsession. And also, what the fuck do their fans obsession have to do with the music? If you don't like it, and you find it to be garbage, well it's your opinion, if you hate the band attitude, like they're always drunk and stuff like that, you're in your right, but it's just useless to be constantly pointing that.

Seriously, shut up.

I decided to give Skyclad a listen to. I've heard some bad things about them and was hoping I'd enjoy them but dear god almost everything about their music falls flat. I was listening to the album Irrational Anthems and hell, the album openly admits to lack of consistency. Although they have many albums and I probably listened to the wrong one, this doesn't give me a good impression on the band at all. Not often do I say one band flat out sucks so this is saying a lot coming from me.

Kyelsa
Baroness
Priestess
Bison B.C.

etc.

Is anyone else starting to notice a trend here in the sounds of these somewhat new bands?

A band's fans don't influence the music, no, but they don't help their case at all.

I doubt "one of the shittiest bands around" would be enjoyed by metalheads.

You give metalheads too much credit.

Most "metalheads" either only like the mainstream bands(I use mainstream loosely, even bands like Edguy are mainstream) OR limit themselves to only a certain genre or two and don't look beyond that.

Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're the lowest of the low, especially if you can admit they had decent albums.

That'd be like if someone said they were a dream theater fan, despite only liking I+W and WDADU, or a Iron Maiden fan despite only liking Iron Maiden and Killers.

Just because a band is decent at the beginning, in your opinion, doesn't mean that you should think their later stuff is worth listening to.

At 3/13/11 08:04 PM, Bahamut wrote: I decided to give Skyclad a listen to.

Skyclad are a band that are meant more to be respected than to actually be listened to.

I checked out their very first three albums, thought they were boring as fuck and really uninspired.

That being said, they ARE considered the first folk metal band by...well, basically everyone(Mago De Oz came a few years later)

So while you don't have to like them per say, you should at least understand the influence they brought to the metal table.

Also, folkemon is a hilarious album title.

I wouldn't say it's a trend to become progressive and more complex...

Most folk metal is a joke.

Sure it's fun as fuck live, but there's no substance or innovation about any of it - the genre will be dead in two or three years.

The genre is totally fucked unless a band combines native american or aboriginal or middle eastern or african or fucking asian folk.

But considering the entire world is stuck with it's head up it's ass about "european metal" being the best, and about how scandinavia has the whole viking theme and shit, I doubt we'll get any real expansion in the genre.

Thus it's doomed to suck, with a few exceptions like primordial, early agalloch, orphaned land and moonsorrow.

Anyway !!!

I've been enjoying my Doom Metal a lot lately.

I'm always listenning to

Bonripper - Satan Worshipping Doom
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Thorr's Hammer - Dommedagsnatt
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Sunn O))) - Black One

So there is some Sludge Doom in there, along with some Stoner Doom, Drone Doom and Death Doom. Any kind of recommandation linked to these genres would be higly appreciated. I already know of Boris, Reverend Bizarre, Warning, Minsk, Ascend and Earth. Soooo, no need to list these.

Whenever I see Minsk I always think of Bossk as well, so that would be one. If you're looking for some Funeral Doom you should check out some Ahab, their album The Divinity of Oceans is brilliant, one particular song that always crushes me is the title track, just beastly.

Another band you might not know of is Black Cobra, they're a 2 piece but make an absolutely huge sound. A good album to start with would be Bestial, which also has my favourite songs by them on it, Omniscient and Sugar Water. I saw them live supporting Weedeater and they crushed me.

That's also another band if you haven't heard them already, Weedeater, who have a new album coming out some time soon I think, but in the mean time you should check out God Luck and Good Speed.

My taste is universal law.

Nah in all seriousness I was talking about how JUST because we'd like to think metalheads all have GREAT taste, their are people who:
A.) Just listen to a genre or two. Like thrash/oldschool death metal elitists, black metal elitists, melodic death metal elitists, power metal elitists, etc.
B.) Only listen to the popular bands, and don't bother spending their time looking into metal bands that aren't selling out 1000+ capacity venues.
C.) Knows a ton of bands, but only really knows a few songs by each - but decides to go to concerts all the time and stuff for no apparent reason. (There's a lot of these kids in my area of the country, but I don't mind - it means more people at concerts giving bands money)

I wasn't passing judgment on anyone or anything. But COB and their fans, fuck that shit. They're the only band I truly dislike with a passion.

Even brokeNCYDE I at least get a good laugh out of.

This! Damn dude, taste in music is subjective, quality may not, but taste is.

A thing you should know, is that everybody in the Metal Hell enjoys some of the mainstream metal and some of the underground metal.

Yeah, as if only listening to underground stuff makes you more trve and kvlt and as if being trve and kvlt was important. Who cares if you're trve and kvlt, there's nothing more important than having pleasure with what you're listening too, whether it's mainstream or underground.

And I know that we all have our own "favorite bands we like to hate". I don't like Slayer,

Lol, I also can't stand Slayer, not saying they don't have some good songs, but for me it all sounds like "shred kerry king shred faster". It lacks of feeling for me.

I still enjoy my CoB stuff every once in a while, and I know that my metal tastes are not limited to a few bands or a few metal genres.

Yeah the problem is the extreme generalization of the fans and putting everyone in the same bag, I love COB, but I listen to almost everything in Metal, if not everything. I may not like a band but I don't really hate any band, and I can't see no point in hating a band, and building an argument expressing my hate against a band, it's useless, a total waste of time, time you could use listening to a band you like. And just because someone is obsessed with a band, that doesn't mean they may not like any other band and be totally closed-minded, in my case I'm obsessed with Insomnium. And I can give you an example of a guy I know, the dude is totally obsessed with COB, he even asked Alexi to accept him as a son on facebook (well that was a little bit silly lol), but he and his band, Scarscythe, played a cover in one concert, and it was not COB, it was Hypocrisy.

Lesbian
Keelhaul

Spirit Caravan
Melvins

Queensryche
Apokatastasia
Gonin-Ish
Gordian Knot
