I guess we do discuss this band way too much lately...
LOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOL WUT? in all honesty, you can't compare them but I beg to differ. I remember lots of things about epica's music, SS isn't very melodic if I can't remember much about them other than being bored.
You said you liked their earlier work...
Epica are just a pathetic blend of Nightwish and Kamelot.Nightwish
Kamelot
HOW THE FUCK DO EITHER OF THOSE SOUND LIKE: Epica
I'm not going to argue with you on this one. If you can't find similarities in the vocals, poppish sound, similar song structures. The way they use heavy guitars to play chords so they can actually sound "heavy". It's all the same dude. It's a recipe we've all heard before... Nightwish, Tristania, Epica... they all sound the same. Well... not exactly "the same", but they have way too much similarities, these can't go unoticed. Strangly, most people who like Epica also seem to like Nightwish. I'm just sayin'...
A trend? Yes, you can't stop what's popular.
That's why everytime a genre becomes popular, you have a billion cheap ass copies of the pioners of the genre.
Seriously, that's like saying "People who like Enslaved are also douchebags who probably jizz over Burzum"
I wouldn't say that. But you can usually guess what you'll find on somebody's playlist if you know that he likes Symphony X, Liquid Tension Experiment and Gordian Knot.
It's funny because they're really not, they're just late to jumping on the folk metal bandwagon so they'll never truely become huge and they try and cover that up by opening for bands NONSTOP. Seriously, they've played in my hometown seven times in 2010 alone.
What's up with all that "become big" or "you can't stop what's popular" stuff I read in all your posts? Is being popular such an important part in playing music? As long as these guys have gigs to play, I don't think they should matter about becoming the next Metallica.
How does this not have death metal elements? Dude, two of the members of epica are from God Dethroned.
Abigail Williams ex-drummer is now playing for Decrepith Birth. So a Symphonic Black Metal/Metalcore band and a Technical Death Metal band. Lot of similarities right? These kind of riffs remind me much more of Melodic Death Metal than actual DM. There is not really anyways you can mix DM with Symphonic Metal. I still get your point though. They are different. They are not exactly like Nightwish or other bands like this. Their Symphonic parts are very similar though. And the heavy parts are not really appealling to me anyway. Even if it was DM, it's not good death metal to me.
it's funny because kamelot have only gotten popular in the past five years, before the black halo they were less popular than symphony x are now. (which is popular, but not very popular)
Why do you say "popular"? I just said that Epica is pretty much a spawn of Kamelot. They became popular because Khan made them play theopening of all of Kamelot's concerts.
The sense is that Epica is still making better music than before while gaining popularity, SS are gaining popularity and making worse music.
I guess you are right when you say SS are making bad music today. They lost an important member of their line-up. When I talk about Scar Symmetry, I'm usually referring to the band of 2006, when they released Pitch Black Progress.
