As far as annoying fans, there's the usual shit. Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Metallica, Pantera, bands that aren't metal but their fans think they are, ect. A lot of them just seem to be walking stereotypes and like they think they're the greatest thing ever because they listen to deathcore and other shit mainstream stuff. As much as I love power metal, this is something I've noticed. Even if that's the case, at least we're getting more metal fans. I may look "nerdy" but I'm into metal because I love the music. Anyone who's taking an interest in metal (the right ones, that is) should be welcomed.

Hey, I take offense to that. I was one of those "nerdy" guys who got into metal in high school. I dunno how I got into it, but I was a nerd long before I got into metal. Maybe these nerds you are referring to got into it because of Guitar Hero, cuz thats a nerdy thing to do.

I used to be proper nerdy (ok I still am but I was way worse), my first metal band was Dragonforce, enough said you might say, but I still love them :3 They were my gateway band, from there I went to Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Dream Theater etc etc.

Also I just got back from seeing For Today and Winds Of Plague, was such an amazing gig, met Johnny from WoP and he singed my album covers :3 I was the only one right up the right of the tiny venue screaming along with him, had a fucking good time.

I think a lot is down to how you actually view it. I can see why people do think that type of DM is really brutal, but it me its always sounded so fake (for lack of a better term). You can go on to say that the more obscure BDM is heavier but to me it just sounds even more phoney.
But after listening to Dystopia, Carcass and early Exodus I've found that I think that stuff is the most brutal, just because of how raw and genuinely aggressive it feels. But you're going to get that when your lyrics are 'Break into a scientists lab, vivisect the fucker, stab him to death' and 'bang your head against the stage' as opposed to 'I spunk in their dismembered .... yawn....'

And I would of loved to have grown up in America around the time Thrash and Death (not the genre, just Death) took off.

Honestly in terms of metal that's one of the most common arguments I get into with people that don't listen to it. They think all death metal sounds like Cannibal Corpse and when you show them stuff that doesn't they think it's some kind of rare mutated exception and that there can't be more than a handful of bands that sound like that.

I just leave them be. If they think that way, they're not the kind of people we want to listen to death metal. I was put off death metal because of Cannibal Corpse (mostly for myself feeling they don't have a great variety in their music) but I was willing to look further into death metal. Same goes for black metal, really. Didn't really like Burzum but I gave the genre a better chance and found some great stuff as a result.

People who are into the more "popular" metal bands, like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Black Sabbath, Mastodon, etc., etc., and they think they are SO FUCKING METAL!!!! They think they listen to the heaviest shit ever and they think they are so into metal. Yet they don't know of gems that you can find if you just barely scratch the surface, like Death, Behemoth, Voivod, Symphony X, Budgie, Kreator, and other greats.
