Am I the only one to think that Jeff Loomis is overrated? And that he's just another of these guys who can shred and play technical stuff, but that he somewhat lacks the skills to write good music? Or maybe it's just that he's loosing inspiration... cause his solo album and the last Nevermore album were not good albums...

No offense to Nevermore, they are still an amazing band :)

Eh. I really like Keepers of the Seven Keys Part II. That's probably my favorite Helloween album, but Walls of Jericho is amazing too.

What's everyone's favourite metal guitar solo? Mine is currently the one in Mastodon - The Czar. When I imagine a perfect guitar solo, it's not the ones that just seem to be an array of random notes being hit (Like most Slayer solo's (Not hating on Slayer, I love them)).

Completely agreed. I'd rather hear a slow, thought out solo than a shredfest any day.

As much as I love Helloween's music in general (including all the Deris-era albums except Unarmed), I'm not finding this one to be so great. I second the statement for only getting it if you're a die hard Helloween fan. Who knows, maybe I just need time to get used to this album but for a band that's been a favourite of mine since the early days of my interests in metal, I do have a lot of expectations.

My three favourite albums of theirs would be the first three albums. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 is my all time favourite. That and the second part have a great definition of magic in metal.

You know, I've thought more about riffs and intros in heavy metal. I still have some favourite solos but they might not be up to scratch. Here are some of my top picks right now:

Agent Steel - Chosen to Stay
Blind Guardian - The Last Candle
Candlemass - Crystal Ball
Ensiferum - Heathen Throne
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Sky Chariots

Not five definite favourites but they are some of my favourites out of thousands of metal tracks I've listened to.

We never concluded the replacement for Ghoul. Nev pretty much won the last one and we may as well make him a horseman. After all, he's the one that was mentioned the most out of the last three (failed) elections.

Death's Crystal Mountain, Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Symphony X's King of Terrors, High on Fire's Blessed Black Wings, and Ayreon's Dawn of A Million Souls. Those are my favorite right now.

Well yeah... he's in Nevermore, kinda gives it away :P.
I think there are very, very few - if any - guitarists in prodominantly Metal bands that are fantastic virtuosos. Skilled, yes. But with that thing that makes them actually listenable, I can't think of many.
Petrucci, sure. Jarzombek, of course - though I'd argue Spastic Ink aren't really that Metaly, though Blotted Science are.
But your Malmsteens, Vais, Gilberts, Bucketheads, Ron Thals, Shawn Lanes... not that Metal.

He seems to show up whenever we talk about his activity. If we see him next time, we might want to ask what to do with the horseman status. When we did have one election, Bill showed up shortly after and kept it as a result. However, his last post was over 2 months ago and he claimed he was back online.

My favorite guitar solo would probably be the last one in Obscura's Centric Flow. It just works so damn well.

So, I still believe we should have a new 4th horseman. I suggest Nev, Denta, Ponos, Ani or I take the 4th place. I suggest we start working on this a little. Nothing too serious, but just suggest people and try to find a good replacement. While the job doesn't require a lot of particular qualities, it would still be important that we find ourselves a new horseman. Someone who would be a fitting image of the Hell. While I think Nev and I would b good to do the job, I still think Ponos, Denta or Ani would do best. I'm way too often taking parts in fights, debates and wars in the Hell, and Nev, according to his own words, is not that much into Metal anymore.

And what do you guys think about Bill's job. Cause it's true that he isn't a very active member. And while this is not taking anything from him, we would need to have active members as horsemen.

So what do you guys think?

Definitely this. I want to root for Nev again but the loss of interest in the genre does doubt me. My first vote will be Dent.

I suggest Nev, Denta, Ponos, Ani or I take the 4th place.

Is there a particular reason why you're leaving me out?

The position should really be saved for a more active member of the Metal Hell. That's why Idio is stepping down from horseman status. I guess this means we need three new horsemen.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-11-07 09:55:57

In this picking of a new horseman, I support Dent, AniMetal, or Bahamut as the new horseman. They are pretty active and they don't really get into arguments, and sort of keep the peace.

In other news, I got Atheist's new album, Jupiter, and it kicks ass. GET IT.

Oh yeah, I like both. I just like the sound of slow solos more, usually. However, I am pretty partial to sweep picking.
