Good after..ning, i needs to listen to some MANOWAR and try and find some sort of proof for this riff copying, i saw COB at download festival, they were shit, they started to play journey - dont stop believing, laiho got the lyrics wrong. I think they're a pretty decent band nontheless. it is a tad annoying when a song doesnt just "sound" like a different record but pretty much IS. I know of a bring me the horizon (Shit) song that pretty much completely rips off a devildriver song, which albeit probably rips off somebody else. anywho, i'm Tony, i like metal, nice to meet you all :)

Never heard of Drama of the Ages and while I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, that album cover looks really awesome and tells me the album itself is really good as well. Any songs you can provide for us?
I also get the feeling sometimes that you don't pay much attention to other people's posts, Smeagol. Everyone knows Ani is the big power metal guy, though he does talk about thrash often, so alright. But Heavenduff a power metal expert? where do you get that?

Come on, Bruce is clearly the black metal expert here. I always look to him for new black metal bands. I didn't mean to piss you off, just take the piss out of ya a little. :)
Anyway, I'd totally be the avant-garde/post-black guy.

Yo, heavenduff. You should check out Dark Age (US) for some solid power metal

Yeah, it's easier to relate with you guys on thrash.
Some of you hate power metal, others only know THE most popular bands and rokuro isn't here anymore.
Also, i've been getting into a lot of thrash metal lately.
But Heavenduff a power metal expert? where do you get that?
Maybe it's because duff is so homosexual that smeagol assumed he's automatically a power metal fan? :P
Haha just kidding.
Anyway, I'd totally be the avant-garde/post-black guy.
Recommend me some avant-garde bands similar to Genghis Tron and Fantomas, please. :)
All the avant-garde stuff I know tends to be like agalloch or like voivod, i'm interested in finding some more totally weird music.

I approve.
Also:
Destiny's End
Theocracy
Seventh Avenue
Balance Of Power
Jag Panzer
I think a lot of people here already know Jag Panzer, but i've never seen anyone discuss any of these other bands. (well I remember once someone posted something about theocracy being great, but I don't think anyone bothered checking them out)

There's a bit of difference between dealing with lifes problems such as "My boyfriend left me! I WANT TO DIE! :'(" and "I have cancer and AIDS and everything else and its just not worth being alive in such pain."
People whose lives are like that probably suffer more in a day than most of the people who call them cowards do in their entire lives.... cept at the end maybe when they too get the shitty end of life's stick.
Some people are cowards, for sure. But not everyone is.
Hmmm comfy fence.

By provide you mean suggestions or links to YouTube? I will give you both anyway. I think the whole album is awesome.
We do have to start somewhere though. If you have any chance to get your hands on this album, I suggest you start from the beginning. There is not a single bad song on the album. However, I'll still give you a few links from YouTube. I can't find all the songs though... So I will just give links to the few ones I have found.
Keeper Of The Crown
Drama Of The Ages
It's sad I couldn't find more... I would suggest you listen to Deceiver Of The Nations, At The Gates, Forever Winter and Victory. Those are all great tracks from the album.

Dalnaki should be our Old School Metal (No specific genre). Seems like he knows a ton of old bands from every single metal genre.

You can't judge such a large amount of people in one statement, that is just not right. There may be a lot of reasons why you would like to kill yourself. I have thought about suicide a few times in the past and not because "My girlfriend dumped me" and other stuff like that. But more like... because I cannot believe in what humanity is right now. I study politics, I see where Neo-liberalism is taking us, I see how our democracy is getting destroyed by rich and powerful people and their corporations. What keeps me alive is that there is some kind of resistance and that I can see other human beings like me, fighting the same fight. One of these fights... Keep our musical culture alive, don't let the big capitalist industry destroy our creativity and hard work to replace it with various cheap artists who do nothing more than copy each others and follow lame trends to give more money to their already rich labels.
That's just me. While it's hard for me to believe in the world of today, I still see good reasons to keep on going, I know individuals who can make a difference, I love people around me and I see other intelligent people, people like the guys from the Metal Hell, the people who still make awesome movies instead of making all these High School Musical sequels...
But what if you don't have a family and friends? What if you live with a possessive and jealous girlfriend who won't let you live your fucking life and manipulate you, using your emotions. What if you have some kind of psychological disorder? Maybe you can't fit in the system, can't go to school because you fail classes, can't find yourself a job.
Please guys, we are all individuals with our own personnal life stories... How can you make such a bold statement and say "EVERYSINGLE ONE who commit suicide is a coward"?
Oh! And if you are going to listen to Jacobs Dream, listen to the song Stand Or Fall, it's fucking awesome !!!
Anyone a fan of Powerglove here? They do pretty incredible metal covers of old game and TV show themes. More recently they did a pretty awesome cover of the pokemon theme tune.

Yeah, the only power metal I listen to anymore is Angra, Helloween, and sometimes a little Stratovarius. Also, Symphony X, if you count them.

I dunno about finding another band quite like Fantomas, but Mr Bungle is also cool.
i'm interested in finding some more totally weird music.
Well, one of the weirder bands I have in my collection is Karaboudjan. They only have 3 songs, though.
Some of my favorite artists labeled as avant-garde metal are Solefald, Arcturus, Virus, Ved Buens Ende, the Soundbyte, and Fleurety. I also really like Sigh, Code, Kekal, Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Unexpect, Age of Silence, and Peccatum. Aarni has some good stuff (Tohcoth sucks). I've been liking Oranssi Pazuzu, too, but I've only sat through their entire album once, and it was late and I was stoned. Smile Carved Sour is decent Ved Buens Ende worship. Phlebotomized and Azure Emote are both good "avant-garde death metal" bands. Kailash is pretty good. So is In Lingua Mortua. Lux Occulta's album, the Mother and the Enemy is extremely awesome experimental post-black metal. I love that album. Bruce recommended me a band called Klabautamann a while ago and I got their album, Merkur, which is excellent. I've recently started looking up stuff like avant-garde, progressive black, and post-black again, but haven't yet really found anything new worth mentioning, except Ackercoke seems pretty good so far.
At 10/28/10 04:36 PM, Sense-Offender wrote: Angra,

Helloween,
I really only enjoy their first three albums.
Although their latest album, seven sinners, while it's just typical deris-era helloween, it's the first deris album I could ACTUALLY imagine kiske singing on. I don't know, it feels like kiske's voice would actually fit - which is weird.
and sometimes a little Stratovarius.
Incredible band, horribly underrated considering how innovative and important to metal they were in the 90's...
Also, Symphony X, if you count them.
I don't. I mean I can understand WHY some people consider them power metal. Long guitar solos in every song, some higher vocals, heavier songs balanced out by some softer songs and how every band(besides megadeth, nevermore and dream theater) they've opened for over the past decade has been power metal. So yes, I can see why some people think this.
But really, I consider them progressive thrash metal with keyboards and a lot of power metal influences. Also, I can guarantee if Divine Wings and Twilight In Olympus were released in the 80's they'd be considered thrash metal classics today.
But yeah.

If only the rest of their songs were as good as their intros. They'd be amazing. I feel that a lot of their songs start off with really awesome riffs, but then it's all downhill from there.
HelloweenI really only enjoy their first three albums.
I rarely listen to anything but the self titled ep and Walls of Jericho, which I guess are both more speed than power, which would explain why I like them better than the rest of their stuff. But I still have Keepers 1 and 2, Master of the Rings, Better Than Raw, and the Dark Ride.

You don't know Arcturus? Aspera Hiems Symfonia, la Masquerade Infernale, and the Sham Mirrors are all great.
I was just listening to a band called Whirling that reminded me of Ved Buens Ende, but not as good. still alright. listening to Way to End right now, which is pretty good so far. I forgot to mention that Vulture Industries is pretty good. The lead singer clearly wishes he was Garm.

There was a monkey in Faust? I've never read the story. I only saw Jan Svankmajer's weird ass movie based on it. A guy fucks a puppet. true story.

Wow. That's messed up. Do I want to see the movie version? Was it actually good? I've seen a performance of the original opera, and that was pretty cool.

To add to what Sensey said in terms of Avant-Garde bands you could also check out Ram-Zet who are quite Unexpect-ish. And for a band being like Fantomas I'd say Today is the Day is the best thing I could offer, it's got the chaos and the screaming, not so much the childish weirdness though. But being like Fantomas can't be a common thing.
Mike Patton and John Zorn's Moonchild might be worth a check out too.

Dude, there is no role any of us (besides Horsemen of course) have. We're all just twats who post. Some of us more than others, and some of us more seriously. Feel free to share your stories of bumming goats in the woods or whatever, but add those things to other posts and discussions thats are going on so the rest of us get a sense of you getting involved.
Also, this isn't related, but do you listen to any Metal besides Black? I've rarely, if ever, heard you mention Thrash, Death, Prog, Doom or owt.
Some of us are still talking about Manowar and it was just recently confirmed that Christopher Lee is going to make a voice role in the re-recording of Battle Hymns. I did think to myself they're better off working on a new album but with Christopher Lee doing the narration in Dark Avenger, that alone should be worth it!

Yeah this, every time I look into this thread it's almost always about Black or Death metal, which for me are my weakest areas of metal, so I'm always put off posting in here.

I meant smeagol, not the club as a whole. I think there is a decent enough balance to this place. Perhaps Death and Black get a few more nudges because every genre seems to have Black and Death variations.
Thrash and Power have fallen away somewhat, but Heavy Metal, Avant-Garde, and Doom are frequently mentioned.
You could also check some of the Death/Black bands out. A few of the Deaths ones are alright. A few :P.

We discuss a lot of different genre. Doom and Avant-Garde are, like Nev said, still mentionned pretty frequently. Progressive is also one of the genres we talk about a lot... and I don't understand why Nev said we don't talk about Thrash and Power that much, because we do... AniMetal's posts are often related to one of these two genres and it's not like he's the only one talking about these genres.
Btw, Nev sucks when it comes to Death and Black Metal. If you want any DM or BM suggestions, just ask me. I'm more of a DM fan, but I could still be helpful if you have any questions about BM. Just name me your favorite DM and BM bands and I will give you some suggestions based on the very little knowledge you admit to have on both genres :P
